Post season streaming TV assessment

If any of you are on Mediacom and want to only stream you're setting yourself up for failure. Mediacom has the lowest data caps in the nation, and then are one of only 5 who charge for more data after you reach the cap.

Speaking of Mediacom, have they gotten any better in the last 10 years? I'm currently on CenturyLink DSL at 60M/5M, and while that has worked up until now, it's proving to be inadequate as the kids get older and stream more content to their phones, or try and play games like Fortnite. Unfortunately the only option I have to get a higher speed is to go with Mediacom. ImOn is starting residential service this year, but I'm guessing it's going to be for high-density areas so they can get the most bang for the buck. My neighborhood won't be high on their list.

So how is the reliability of Mediacom's Internet these days?
I haven't really had any connection issues with them, I just hate them in general. The longer you're a customer of theirs, the more they bend you over. For example I upgraded to 200M download speed but on speed test I always seem to average right at 50. I have no issues with 4 streaming devices going at the same time at my house though. Thankfully the only reason I upgraded was to increase my data limit, it could just be my neighborhood that is limiting my speeds. They offer a 1G service but I think it would be pointless for me to have.

That depends on what product you have with them. The basic is a low cap but the tiers offer much higher caps. Unfortunately as with most places, opportunities for competition is low. I may check out CenturyLink though

They're way lower than everyone though which is the problem. Their highest is 4000 Gigs lower than most entry speed 1TB cap. As more and more moves toward 4k this will become an issue for customers. For Netflix an hour of 4k is about 7 gig of data

For anyone that has issues getting their advertised speeds. Mediacom and other large Internet Providers provide their customers with some of the biggest piece of junk modems and Access points. My first recommendation for everyone is to go out and buy a quality modem along with a quality router/access point. Do some research and actually spend some money, buying the cheapest crap you can find will just continue the problems. Every company will have a different process for using your own modem but you should be able to call in they will assist you.

Sometimes you can actually get higher than advertised speeds, depending on the provider.

I don't recommend using CenturyLink or any other DSL provider as their service is far too reliant on how close to the PX you live as well as the quality and age of wiring running from the pole to your home. I have just seen too many people have issues with DSL to make it worthwhile.

Everyone should call their provider every 6 months and ask about new deals or packages. Say you are thinking about switching companies and are comparing products. I know it's annoying and you shouldn't have to do it but it can save you alot of money in the end. You might need to call multiple times to get the correct customer service rep.

In case anyone is skeptical, I have a degree in Network Management and am currently a Cyber Security System Administrator. I currently have 200MB down 20MB up w/ unlimited data plan through my provider and I get 225MB down and 20MB up using my own equipment. I use Hulu Live which I have really enjoyed.

If Verizon can keep their current 5G in home internet pricing the same when they get the entire country covered it will cause the cable companies major pain and force them to lower prices. 1GB download speeds, Unlimited data, $50 a month if you have a cell phone plan or $70 a month if you don't.

Yeah I bought a really nice router a few years back but use their modem as a bridge only. I do need to buy my own modem though as Mediacom charges a monthly "modem rental fee". What's funny is the last conversation I had with them a few months ago - they said that I had the best modem that they offered, which I find hard to believe.

Sage advice. I dumped the rented modem years ago. I have DSL but I get upload and download speeds pretty close to what I’d expect.

A buddy of mine does the call at least every six months. Although he says they don’t wheel n deal at Direct TV like they used to. Perhaps it’s new MaBell strategy.

Their modems are usually only 4 channels. That is way too low nowadays. Go with atleast 16 channel, I would recommend 32.

I should have done this a long time ago - just got this guy: Netgear CM1000. It will pay for itself after a year b/c Mediacom charges a $10 monthly rental fee. Thanks for the encouragement, something I should have done 10 years ago.

We have YouTube TV and Hulu so my wife can get the TLC channel and HGTV channel and Discovery for me. But, Hulu's guide is absolute junk and a pain to use. It's not in a grid format, so one can't really look ahead for a channel to see what is on. I wouldn't know how to DVR a game or show 5 hours in advance on that thing. Maybe I am missing something.

Yeah me too. I've only had HULU about a month. But that is my biggest gripe. No way to see what is coming up later in the evening.

Actually, there IS a way to see the next 24 hours of programming. Go to "Browse", choose "Networks", then select the network you want to browse. It will show programming for the next 24 hours.

In addition, for any shows, movies and sports teams you put in "My Stuff", you can go to the respective show/movie/event, then go to "Schedule" and it will show you upcoming air dates/times for next episodes/airings.

Thanks. Not ideal but thanks for the pointers to help a bit.

Thanks! I will try that.

Well... I tried it. While it does work, it's not very user friendly. Only shows the schedule of one network at a time and takes a lot of clicking to get the info you want.

Still beats cable though.;)

Not sure if I am last to the party on this suggestion...

I had never used Apple TV as a TV interface. Their remote is ok to launch a movie, but to surf channels, it blows. Blows big time.

I bought this unit on Amazon. It makes a huge difference to a well seasoned couch tater, like me.

Called the...Inteset.

Inteset 4-in-1 Universal Backlit IR Learning Remote for use with Apple TV, Xbox One, Roku, Media Center/Kodi, Nvidia Shield, most Streamers and other A/V Devices

Lol, I couldn’t get the link to work. If I had my VCR hooked up, it’d be flashing 12am.
FIFY

Just have to type in the word you want the link to be I used "Fify" (fixed it for ya), highlight it and click the little chain link looking thing and paste in the URL.

Try it this way next time :)
