Post game presser

My college coach, Buzz Levick, always told us that it was our job to get fired up for the game and it was his job to get us to play together. If a player can't get up for a game, that's on the player.

Buzz was a helluva coach, loved watching Wartburg way back then..I went to one of his camps and met Denny Crum...i thought I died and went to heaven (that was back in the late 70's)

Really did I read that correctly you just said the X's and O's are just fine? Wow!

Also If players have to search their souls to recommit to each other than that is on leadership and that starts at the top as well.

So all 18 - 22 year olds do everything exactly as their told by their coaches and parents? A coach can identify to a player what a good shot is for them and what is acceptable as an open shot, and then tell that player he as a green light to shoot every good open shot he has, then puts them in an offense that consistently gets that player those shots. But if the player head fakes and passes up the shot it's coaching?

I was very wrong after the Minny game when I said shooting 43% won't win many games. If we would have shot 43% against nw, we would have won by double digits.

32% with a lot of open looks. I can somewhat get behind people being mad about Fran not recruiting better shooters...or maybe not developing shooters. Beyond that, no amount of x's and o's make up for 32% shooting.

Word. The horrific shooting returns, and we all realize that this is the same Iowa team that has struggled. I forget how many minutes they went without scoring against the kitties, but it was pretty awful once again.

Iowa really only succeeds when they get the ball inside. When they settle for jumpers the entire game, they're sunk.

The single biggest issue this team has is the same exact issue Fran's teams have had for several years. They are inconsistent. They have no mental toughness. They are a Jekyl and Hyde team.

The similarities between what we've seen with the Iowa football team and the Iowa basketball team are incredibly frustrating. Both teams surprise the fan base one game by playing really well, and then the next game they look like complete dog ****. They'll play a great game and then they'll play terrible. The competition really doesn't matter. They'll compete with the best and they'll lose to the worst. It's really really difficult to watch. Being a Hawkeye fan is not any fun right now.

It's crazy how similar the two programs are in terms of their incredible ability to struggle with success.

Iowa fans who follow both sports are going to have to go through some serious deprogramming to have confidence with either the FB or BB teams.

Football: Up by 10 points at half? That's a loss...it just hasn't happened yet.
Basketball: Sweep a top 20 program with the best guard in the country. Lose to a horrible Northwestern team.

All true.

It's the responsibility of parents to make sure that their kids do what the parents want them to do. That training starts when they are in diapers. Parents can take away things that older kids value.

The coach can take away what's valuable to a player. Playing time.

The key in both cases is consistency.

Izzo and Ryan get pretty animated. So do John Calipari and Rick Pitino for that matter.

I like a coach that recruits and develops and instructs his players well.

Actually that's not true. Bo gets very animated going after the officials but he almost never gets up in the face of his players. There are probably exceptions but in general you never see him yelling at a player as he comes to the bench like you see Izzo and Crean or the other Bo (Pellini) doing all the time. In fact when a player makes a mistake, he gets pulled and sits on the bench and Bo rarely even says anything to him. They know what they did wrong. A good example is the first game with IA (I think it was this game). In the first minute or so Dekker went under a screen rather than fighting through it and Uthoff hit a jump shot behind the screen. Bo immediately got up and sent in Dukan for Dekker, who of course is one of the expected stars of the team. Turned out that there wasn't a time out for several minutes so the substitution didn't take place for a few minutes. Dekker went to the bench and I don't think Bo said a word to him, but one of the assistants probably did. Dekker then went on to play one of his best games. Just a very common example of the way Bo motivates players with playing time and not emotion.

I actually agree with this style of coaching and I wish Fran would use it. If you keep making the same mistakes, you sit and you don't play! They'll either get it right in their heads and play it like the coach wants it or they won't play and they'll move on. It's the only way to coach, IMO.
All that aside. Bo Ryan is a whiney ***** with the officials and he coaches defense outside of the intended rules. And he's ugly as a mud fence. Makes the Iowa basketball team look like a bunch of runway models. His face could chase the stink off a road kill skunk.

LOL. I agree that he gets animated with the officials and sometimes it's over the top, but what top coach doesn't? Tubby Smith is perhaps the only one. Certainly coach K and Izzo let the officials know how they feel. As for his defense, it's not outside the rules. It's smart. Use your body and not your hands, and only move vertically. It's totally within the rules. As for looks, I don't think the IA team will give Kate Upton any competition (JU, are you there?). Who cares about looks anyway? Give me wins and a program that does it the right way anyday. Bo is actually a very classy guy. It's a good sign if your opposing fan bases hate you!!
