Possible Graduate Transfers for 2016-17 Basketball Season

Jeez, some of you guys act like we have a 5 star basketball program here. We are freeking Iowa with a population of over 2 million that has 4 d1 colleges and 2 major programs, we are not swimming in 4 and 5 star basketball talent here. Fran needs to turn over every leaf looking for talent, if bringing in a graduate player can improve the team then they should go for it.

This. I'm not saying live and die by the transfer but if you can get a guy who can have a significant immediate impact you take him. Period. Those guys don't grow on trees.

I think it really depends on the team you have coming back. With the team we have coming back I think you stay away from graduate transfers. We are going to be extremely young, and developmental. Fran needs to find out next year if Williams and Bohannon can man the PG positions going forward. If we bring in GT, that will stunt their playing time and growth, and then frankly Fran won't know for sure if those guys are the answer or not at the PG. So I think for us, next year the graduate transfer just doesn't make sense. The same case could be said for all our players (sans Jok). I'd rather get our young guys experience and game time next year. We need to get Williams/Bohannon/Moss/Uhl/Wagner/Baer/Cook all minutes and experience to then take advantage the next 3 years.

dean, to me those are additional reasons to bring in a transfer. Someone that can help carry the load while the young players develop. The goal is to get to the big dance year in and year out, we can't afford to take a year off for development.

Again I'm not saying Fran HAS to go out and get a transfer THIS year, I'm just saying the Iowa program can't afford to turn its back on basketball talent from any avenue.

I know that is what you meant. It isn't like I'm vehemently opposed to one, just don't think we really need it for next year. Of course if Fran brings one on, I will be right on board with it.

Although the rule may be stupid it would be equally stupid for us to not take advantage of it if it can help us.

We don't make the rules here.

Indeed. If we can, we should.

I don't understand the moral high ground some of us think we'd be taking by not accepting transfers, when it isn't even against the rules.

For me it isn't about "moral high ground". I just don't think that it is necessary next year, and it will for sure hold back the development of a Williams for instance if he loses minutes to a GT.

Fran said Williams will play the 1 2 and 3. So he wouldn't necessarily lose that much play time. He's probably only a temporary solution at point anyway. A graduate transfer would help bridge the gap until Connor gets here.

If you're bringing in a GT, you're probably pretty darn certain he will improve your team for that year. So that's trading the possibility for a small setback in the future for an almost certain improvement that year. It's never a good idea to not bring in a better player for fear of the worse player not getting enough playtime.

Something tells me Fran is going to be doing a lot of yelling next season.

Craig Neal's son is a grad transfer, but this is absolutely sickening:

And don't think for a second that there wouldn't be a couple of nut-jobs around here who would do the same thing to Conner or Patrick. Hope Fran's ready for this.

I also hate this transfer rule. But it's there. As others have said...Baer gets the first scholarship. I don't see any minutes available for a transfer. We have a roster full of talented players. And explaining to a couple of them that they have to sit and wait another year because we "rented" a 1 year player may be tough to accept...would be for me. And finally as said in the thread referencing the interview Fran did..."We have no time for knuckleheads."

Really? you can't be serious we have a team full of complete UNKNOWNS outside of Jok, Iowa would be smart to get known GOOD players in for next year unless you want a losing record next season.

Yes really. The primary focus of our program is 4 year players. And I have a hunch Fran believes he has "GOOD" players. The fact that you haven't seen them play or practice doesn't mean they are unknowns. And I like what I've seen of Baer, Wagner and Williams. And I believe Uhl will take a big step up with more minutes and opportunities.

I don't think we will take a big step back next year. I think we will be fighting for an NCAA berth. But I will gladly take an NIT season knowing we will be very good the next 3 to 4 years thanks to the experience the young players get next year.

Side Note - Look at my signature. I do believe I was on the money with my 12-6 prediction a year ago around this time...and I most definitely was in the minority.

Going after Junior College players, transfers and especially graduate transfers is something we need to be doing all the time. If we're not going after transfers we're missing out on opportunities. Plus it's not like Fran hasn't recruited some in the past anyways

I'm not saying we should never take a transfer. I'm saying it should be the exception not the rule. And I don't believe in running guys off, not renewing scholarships, etc. This is what has to happen to take a transfer this year. If someone wants to come to Iowa and doesn't expect a scholarship then let them come and try to earn some playing time. But there are no scholarships available and Baer gets the next one that is available IMO. He's earned it...and while wearing an Iowa uniform.

I'd rather get a senior transfer PG than give Baer a scholarship

I agree, Fran needs to always be looking at ALL options. Obviously blue chippers and 4 year guys are the preferred, but Juco's and transfers are a part of college basketball as well, and we always need to be searching those ranks as well.

Also, I will say this, I am not sure why Fran is so willing to want his kids playing for him at Iowa anyways.

I mean, if I were in his shoes, I still might want my kids to get away a bit, go to another program and coach who I respect.

The fishbowl is MIGHTY small here, and if I were Fran OR his kids, I might want to get away from that. Yes, it will get ugly if the team is struggling with his kids on the team.

We STILL hear and see the comments about Lickliter and his son around here, don't we?
