Position Battles You're Most Excited For:

For me it's gotta be the starting CB opposite Prater.

Apparently it was going to be Spievey and Bernstine last year, but we all know what happened to the Rail Splitter. So, if Bernstine was good enough to start, and Hyde was the #3 in the Orange Bowl, you have to be excited for that battle! They're both athletic freaks. This should be fun.

I'm excited for how the LB position shakes out. Excited because I think we got 5 good backers, and the three starters will really earn their spots. I'm interested in how the O-Line shakes out, but I'm not as confident that we have an much talent here as in the other competitions.

Well actually, the battle between Bernstine and Spievey was for 2008. The 2009 version was between Bernstine and Prater. They were neck and neck before Bernstine's injury and Prater's OWI. So Prater may still have won the job last year even if Bernstine hadn't gotten hurt.

This year should be interesting. My guess is that Bernstine will win it at least for the beginning of the season. But Hyde would seem to be the next great corner for us in a long line of them under Ferentz (Benny Sapp, Jovon Johnson, Charles Godfrey, Spievey, and even Prater may end up being included in that list).

I think he meant that Jordan and Amari were both going to be the starters.

Most Important: O-line
Most Depth: RB
Most Intriguing: LB 3 or 4 guys fighting for two spots....Interesting to see if Jeremiah moves to the middle.

other than HB, I'm interested to see if Vandenberg can learn get his intangibles up enough to challenge for the QB spot. It probably will never happen, Stanzi just somehow gets it done despite lackluster stats on paper.

Personally, I don't think Vandenberg will have a legit shot at getting the starting job, but I think he'll have improved enough to push Stanzi to new heights as a QB. If our O-Line can keep him standing, then Stanzi may just be able to do more than "get it done". He'll do it impressively.

I think it's gotta be OL for me. My perception is the race for three spots is WIDE open among some 5+ candidates for those position. Talk about position battles!

I'm interested to see how the RB turns out and CB. I think Bernstein holds down the spot. Seem him lately? Boy is big!

See, OL doesn't excite me much because Ferentz seems to tinker with that lineup throughout the season anyway. It's the most fluid in terms of how many players are seeing snaps.

The LB battle will be awesome, too. I think when it all shakes out it will be Hunter, Davis, Nielsen starting.

As for RB I think Jewel starts, Wegher/Robinson are 2a/b, and we'll also see Wegher in the slot sometimes.

VB won't be a starter this year but I can almost be certain he will see actually meaningful playing time in there once in a while. He proved himself well against tOSU and he is more than likely the future after Stanzi leaves. I think they will really try hard to get him more in game reps.

No chance VB gets any shot at the starting job unless Stanzi dies. Meaningful minutes I would hope for though.

VB has to recognize that a corner running full speed at him is going to tackle him for a loss of down before he is a starter ahead of Stanzi.

I would hope VB's bigger concern is keeping his name at #2 ahead of Wienke rather than worrying about being the starter.

I can't wait to see what happens with the new guys. I've been told Morris is still being considered for a few positions. I'd love to see what happens with Derby and CJ too.

Would you agree, however, that if VB went ahead and shot for the starting spot, that he would beat out Weinke? I feel like taking that shot is like playing for the win, and just trying to stave off Weinke for #2 is like playing not to lose. He'd be just about guaranteed to show off his best if he feels he can compete for the #1 spot (even if he really can't).
