in reality with iowa it is most positions since they usually have to fill senior starter positions. if hock leaves then TE group and WR group hand in hand for moving the chains, average RBs can be productive behind a great offensive line but Oline run blocking is questionable so that is a worry. i will amend this when Hock decides

Dline should be ok if Nixon plays well. i think Golston has the motor like AJ. Lbkr group is above avg. worry about hooker loss.

Receivers/TEs get you lots of TDs and pass rush and Dbacks prevent TDs. i am somewhat worried about both groups.

Is it wrong that I'm more concerned about our overall depth than a particular position. It just concerns me when a program known as being a developmental program loses a number of underclassmen. I'm not saying the guys that will fill in for them won't pan out or are not ready, but I think it may be more of an issue as you move toward the second and third strings. Could be detrimental if injuries start piling up.

Would any of you change your mind if you knew that one of the DL we are counting on doesn’t play?

We need to land a Juco or grad transfer, IMHO.

Injuries at key spots and sometimes just plain injuries are always a big problem for Iowa and similar teams. 2009 got derailed late because our backup qb was ill prepared. 2010 because the MLB, RG, and RB got injured and the hawk D needs a really good MLB. 2012 two Off tackles go down as did the season.

Bama and Clemson just plug in another 4-5 * player. Heck as they have said Clemson's 3rd String QB made the drive of the season for them against Syracuse.

I agree about 2009. The HC has committed to not getting the QB 2nd teamer lots of meaningful snaps. I would've thought the 2009 fiasco would've changed his thinking on that strategy . . .
Though I suspect Brian is working hard to change that strategy judging from 2018.

But before any of us get too negative about next season and how "iowa has no margin for error", let me put this out there:
Dial the clock back 12 months. If I had told you that among conference rivals only Michigan & O$U would finish the year with a better overall record, would you have believed me? And would you have been happy? Because that in fact is what happened.

Any way you spin it, the B1G West was right in front of Iowa for the taking, and they blew it. That’s the disappointing thing about this season.

Priorities are most often, solid defensive line, solid offensive line. So, if one wants to worry, they would be the places to focus like a laser.

Most teams that don't have both of the above are about contract extension quality at best, 7-5, 8-4, 9-3 and a bowl named after some processed food product.

We have 7-5, 8-4 RB quality.

WR? Just stop.

He's leaving. All we are waiting for is the formality of announcement.
You have an inside source on this? I would expect him to go too but given that it's taken him so long to announce, I don't feel like it's a done deal...

His inside source is the fact that T.J. stayed in Florida after the Outback bowl and is training with other guys who are going to the draft.

While very unlikely it’s possible that he’s just training with those guys to see what he needs to improve on to make the next level. Classes aren’t in session so T.J. can train wherever or with whoever he may like.

Again he’s likely gone I think most understand this, but until he confirms it, it’s not confirmed.

He could simply come back and train with Doyle for free if he was staying.

Maybe training with some other guys is a nice change of pace, plus the weather in Florida might be a little nicer.

Again he’s probably gone which stinks. Would be much more optimistic about next year with him coming back.

First Bolded Statement - There is no reason whatsoever to not have your team know the #2 QB is going to get 1 or 2 planned drives in many games depending on game circumstances. For example; if you are ahead by more than 7 mid 2nd qtr your #2 qb will get a drive . Same late in 3rd qtr if you are ahead by more than 10 then #2 will or is planned to get one drive. Whatever rules you want to use.

Second Bolded Statement - I posted in another thread yesterday that I think Iowa can go 9-3 next somewhat based on some teams losing 3 and 4 year starters at QB, like Purdue and NW. I think we will have one or two productive TEs next year, maybe not a Mackey winner but still very good

Third Bolded Statement - I might not have believed you but I am not happy really!!! Our coaches and offense had a stinky game at home against NW. We blundered away the Wisky and PSU games. And the team gave up several long TDs against Purdue but still could have won that game with a stop.

Overall, the players and coaches would probably tell all of us that they are disappointed and how they think they should have won at least 2 more games at least.

Now hold on a second. Outback does NOT serve processed food!

Punter at 31% currently. We apparently have no faith in our offense. Probably rightly so.

It was a difficult choice.

Punter is the position individually that has the most room for improvement. Field position can have a huge impact on a game.

But only being on the field a few times a game, is it as concerning as the other positions??

I don’t know but I still voted punter because no other position jumps out at you.

Kirkball needs a punter at the top of his game. There must be some around?

My biggest concern, offensive line, was not listed for some reason. If we couldn't run the ball this last season, and are losing 2.5 starters, then ruh roh...
