Point Guard

Fran and staff need to make an all out push to find a JUCO or late bloomer to sign this spring or next year will be similar to this year. Need a guy with some "swag". Hopefully there's a few left out there.

Well, Dickerson was supposed to be that guy, but I agree, Fran still needs to find a good PG any way possible.

I don't think we need a point guard anymore than we need a good player at any other position. We just need to find a perimeter player (or 2 or 3) that can create shots for himself. If its a point guard, combo guard, wing, forward, I don't think it matters.

Iowa has IMO a bigger problem and that's scouting talent. **** I would take Bryce Cartwright right now if he had any eligibility left.

I stopped reading after this, because your crazy if you believe that..

Too little to late on the PG position. Makes no sense to try to bring in someone marginal to beat out two Sr. in Gesell and Clemmons. Instead work like crazy on the PG position in the 2016 class. Bring in a top 100 kid to take over the point and make an impact.

Mike G. and Clemmons havn't been the PG that Fran thought they'd be when he signed them. Fran thought he had the PG position locked down, but was terribly wrong in his evaluation. Then 2 years after signing them he is trying like crazy to sign Ulis cause he already knew he was wrong on that. He then couldn't get him, then he couldn't get LaChance, and then he finally got his 3rd option in Dickerson. We are seeing how much these mistakes are hurting Iowa currently. The poor play of MG and AC.....then missing on a Ulis, then missing on LaChance (both Fr currently making an impact at the PG position). It is basically a 3 pronged failure in recruiting, and it is killing the BB team right now.

What is a more gaping hole for next season, PG or C/PF? There is only 1 scholarship left for this class.

This team has a much bigger need in getting a post player. Woodbury will be the only legit post player on this team next season.

I still think point guard is more important. Controls and has the ball in his hands more. Gesell is really more a of a 2 than a 1. Doesn't have that burst and quickness needed. Clemmons is/was a bit of a project coming out and has improved, but not enough IMO. Teams can be successful without a true big guy if you have the other parts and we do have or will have plenty of guys in the 6'6'' to 6'8" range, although young.

The problem I have with the post position is the fact that regardless of what we have coming back, they have to be able to consistently put up points. Given, it can open up our shooters by just working the ball inside effectively, if we aren't shooting the ball well we need to pick up those points in the post and nothing against Woody, but I simply don't see him being the double digit point threat that this team needs in the paint.

It's pretty damn tough to score inside when defenses have absolutely zero respect for the perimeter players. Not little respect, zero respect. This team needs a shooter to force defenses to stop packing it in on the inside.

Iowa needs scorers. I dont care what position on the floor it comes from. Post play, jumpers, slashers, etc.........I dont care. They need a few kids who can put the ball in the hoop consistently.

One thing this thread is telling me, judging by the variety of responses: Iowa has lots of needs for next year and beyond. Unfortunately, just one scholarship left to fill them with. Not good.

Scrap the post....do not need...point guard is a must...start looking Fran and get someone w/some stones and some ice in their veins for Christ's sake...

Mostly agree, we need a good point guard and one other good player at any position as long as they can get points.

It shouldn't be hard to score more than 4 pts when you're 4 or 5 inches taller than your opponent's tallest guy. Of course when you have a 2" vertical, can't dunk(which is utterly pathetic), and can't make a goddamn layup to save your life it doesn't matter if you're being guarded by LeBron or a lawn chair. Fact is Woodbury is not a good basketball player. At least not against any sort of decent competition. He can take solace in the fact that the team is full of guys who are avg to below avg against decent collegiate men's basketball players.

I understand everybody being upset with how the team is playing but in no means is it all on the PG. Gesell has played well as of late actually shooting 40% from 3 the last 5 games. He is one of the top distributors in the conference when it comes to assist percentage. He has had nearly no help from the 2 this season. Clemmons is not the answer, your starting 2 should not take only 1 shot like he did against UNI.

Looking at the depth chart and projecting what this team has in the future I feel it is pretty important to get a big with the last scholarship in this class. Fran already has 3 wings coming in that can all play at the 2 or 3 in Fleming, Hutton, & Moss. Wagner is a tweener type that is more of an athletic 4 than he is a 3. So this is what we are looking at depth wise from my perspective:

2015-2016:
PG - Gesell, Clemmons, Dickerson
SG - Jok, Ellingson, Fleming, Moss
SF - Uthoff, Uhl, Hutton
PF - (Uthoff or Uhl?), Wagner
C - Woodbury, ??? none
*(Uthoff is better on the wing and I'm not sold on Uhl as a post player until he gets stronger)

2016-2017:
PG - Dickerson
SG - Jok, Ellingson, Fleming, Moss
SF - Uhl, Hutton
PF - (Uhl?), Wagner, Pemsl
C - none

Throw in that it takes longer for bigs to develop and it is much easier to find a guard that can come in and contribute right away, I would say C is the bigger need depth wise. Get a big this year with the last scholarship and go for a PG in the 2016 class. Just my opinion but I believe that is the way to go. From what others have said about Fran stating he is looking for a big, it's looking like that is the way he is going to go. JUCO or transfer is where he may end up going as there isn't much left available for HS seniors.

"Legit" is quite a stretch. If you mean a really tall guy who occupies space near the paint then I would agree.

By legit I mean somebody that can actually guard an opposing teams center. Who on the roster for next season can do that besides him? The season after nobody. Do you guys honestly want Uhl playing the 5? I'm not sure he can even solidly play the 4 at this point until he gets stronger.
