It's weird. Yesterday and earlier today I was going through archives online of those 1980's teams, bringing up old Daily Iowan articles, box scores, things i hadn't browsed in years, if not decades. Then i get home from a basketball game and see this news, and it's also on ESPN. Spooky coincidence. What a legacy.

The Iowa football that we know was created and started by this man. While the record may not show it in wins and losses he did more for Iowa football than anyone else and it can be argued that he changed the Big10 forever.

if there was a stronger word than Legend I would use it. Heaven just got one hell of a coach

And yet, as he often said, it was merely about changing the "mindset". Nothing fancy beyond a few trick plays. No "wildcat" QBs, no Nike or Under Armour bankrolling new uniforms each week. And then again, he made sure the U of I invested in the program. He made stuffy academic types understand that alums, locals, students, businesses, etc., will thrive on the sense of pride that a football team can bring.

Truly one of a kind.

I honestly believe if Hayden would have arrived at Iowa 10 years sooner than he did, we would have won a national title under him and probably at least 3-4 more Big 10 titles.
There would have been no Hayden without Bump, Evy would not have hired him, petty as he was.

Hayden also trademarked the tiger hawk logo. He made a small fortune off that I think. Not criticizing him, just think he was paid better than most assume.

I could be wrong, but I think he sold the tigerhawk merchant rights to the university fairly early on. He made some compensation off it but didn't get filthy rich.

His first contract was for 45k per season but I think subsequent contracts were more in line with the marketplace. I don't think he ever used other job offers to leverage more money. An indoor practice facility? That's a different story. Hunter Rawlings? That's a different story.

I just loved his story telling. One of the best is a story he told on that BTN Special about the 1985 team, where they were warming up to play Michigan and he had OG’s snapping the ball to the punter, with typically predictable and awful results. Schembechler was watching at the 50 yard line where they were talking before the game And he said, “Hayden, you can’t let that guy snap the ball on punts..?!” And Hayden replied, “Mr. Schembechler, we don’t plan on having to punt today.” And he walked away

The man had such a confidence about him. He didn't say he was going to try to make Iowa a winner. He said he was going to. And he did. All without beating his own chest and making it about him.

When I think of Fry, then look at coaches like Fleck and Frost... I gotta shake my head an laugh.

how did this work? I’m genuinely curious how much of a hand he had in the actually creation and ownership of it.

Hayden wanted to refresh and recreate the IOWA brand. He sought out an advertising guy from Cedar Rapids (name escapes me) to create the new design.

Can't you just hear/see him doing that too? I mean good lord that's great. Been dreading this happening but time it just keeps on going on.
