I do not know about anyone else, but I do not know how much more bad news I can take from our men's basketball program. I find myself cringing at every new rumor...am I the only one?

Yes. McCaffery needs scholarships. I'm sure McCaffery wants to change some of characteristics on this team, as he values different skills than Lick. And quite frankly, our talent level isn't all that good anyways. I also think McCaffery will work Juco's and prep schools to find kids that fell through the cracks a little to give us an immediate upgrade in talent. We will see. I think we will see some athletic combo guards brought in and depending on transfer an athletic big or two (i'm purely guessing).

My guess is we'll see a lot of movement in the next month or so. To be expected with the steep decline of the program and the coaching change.

Hold on tight and enjoy the ride.

If we are going to be bad next year, then I guess it might be better to have more open schollys for Fran next year. Anything is better than the lick era slow bleed.
Sadly,we might have to retreat, regroup, reload and suffer thru a couple of bad years.
It will be worth it if he can recruit great replacements for the departees...if not, ouch.

Remember this feeling in two years when/if something else goes wrong, a player transfers, or the team has yet to get to .500 (I'm not predicting it, I'm just saying it's possible.)

If we want to avoid this kind of stuff, we HAVE to have continuity at the head coach position. I'm talking 8+ years. So whenever we hit a rough patch (and I'm sure we will), I don't want to hear rumblings about firing McCaffery. We've seen where the coaching carousel gets you, and it is not fun. For better or for worse, we've got to stick with our coach, acknowledge that he's taking over a terrible situation, and give him some time to right the ship. It will not be fast, and it will probably not be linear-- there will be steps forward, and there will be steps back. To put it another way-- there will likely be just as much bad news as good news over the next few months and even years. Better to just accept that now and save ourselves the ulcers.

You are right, continuity is what it will take, but will the fan base be patient? It seems that their patience has grown less and less with each recent coach...I am in for the long ride and I will always support our coach until he is out the door...some would say to a fault.

It is just hard to watch us lose players every year and our best players at that...

I think the reason fans were impatient with Lick is because it was killing us slowly to watch them play. He also didnt make any changes when needing. I'm not saying Fran is the savior(i hope he is) but if he can keep his pace similar to Siena at Iowa it will be easier to be patient with him.

It certainly is NOT good news on the surface...but it is what it is. 2 schollies now open. How many more?

Change is painful. That's why so many people resist it. I love sports because we get a chance to experience the change, without being personally effected by it... in any real world sense, and yes, I do own my fair share of season tickets.

As so many have said before on this forum, let's enjoy the ride. One door closes, two more open. After all, we're talking about 18 year olds.

I'm still upbeat, but I do believe coach needs to fill all schollies this year. Depth is an issue and we need bodies on the bench to compete. Especially at PG.

What if we hired a new AD that had connections with a top ranked coach and get him to come to Iowa along with his ability to recruit.

I think Gary Barta got us an excellent coach who is going to be up for the task of rebuilding this program. Give him time. I think next year will be better than this year was...regardless of who transfers out.

Don't bet on it, best recruit and best player both gone....could easily lose 25+ next year.

Agreed. That's the problem too. It's like the economy. Bad stock prices lead to job cuts lead to less spending leads to worse stock prices leads to job cuts...

Bad season leads to bad recruiting classes leads to worse seasons leads to worse recruiting classes...

Although, I'm no Lickliter defender this is part of the situation he inherited. We're going to have a bad season next year and we need to figure out how to recruit well despite that. It's a really really tough challenge.

We would have lost 25 next year with lick anyway. Fran started with a lot less when rebuliding before. Fresh attitudes are not all bad.

Apparently I'm still just numb and apathetic from the last five years. I didn't feel much relief or excitement when Lickliter got fired. I didn't get that excited when McCaffrey was hired. I read about Larson and Fuller and my reaction was merely ugh, and oh well. That was 2 minutes ago when I read it and my mood is already back to what it was. Geeez. I used to care more about the basketball team than I did the football team, and the football team was good then too.

How many days til football season?
