Please Call a TO Fran Illinois Game Thread

Very sad. We are so bad on D. Our O tonight was awful. Missed shots galore!
Do we think there is any chance we could bring on a D specialist on the coaching staff?I am so tired of poor shooting teams that end up making Iowa the worst D against the 3 in the BT. (That is a correct stat).

I did not see Illinois as superior in skills overall. It was a game I thought we could win. We were only behind them in the loss column by 1 damn game until tonight.

Yeah. We have suffered badly with the loss of Owen. Then Thellwell.
I still believe we will be significantly better next year with our new recruits and some very good returning players. But we sure have a long way to go.

Stating the obvious: We simply have to play better D.

15 turnovers for Iowa with 5 minutes to play. 4 to’s for Illinois.

I hate timeouts late in the game. If it was up to me teams would only get 1 timeout per quarter. In both football and basketball.

Wouldn’t want college students having fun or anything
I thought it was funny, if not ironic. I haven't caught all of Iowa's games this year, but I haven't seen Fran get all that mad all season. Its like his doctor told him he had a heart condition and needed to chill to avoid a heart attack.

I did hear a rumor that he indeed has a medical condition.

Tonight is why McCaffrey's offensive philosophy doesn't work. Illinois can more than match Iowa in running up and down the court. Iowa's defense is really struggling with Illinois quickness. Illinois has owned the paint and tonight they are making 3s.Payton out of game as I write this. He was totally out of control in a team game.
His offense is fine. Gotta have the horses. Iowa is undersized inside. They are out manned on perimeter. Sandforts shot selection is so bad most of the time. He and Dix are their only scorers pretty much and when they both aren't playing well they're lucky to put up 60 pts. And only reason they hit 61 was cause Harding put up an uncharacteristic 16. The rest of the team barely has anyone capable of putting 10 pts up there. That's not on Frans offense but the players individual capabilities. Frans shown over the yrs his O works fine.

Needless to say 61 pts isn't gonna win any games for Iowa with how poor their defense is. 80 pts is damn near the minimum and usually that isn't enough.

Payton Sandfort kills so many possessions with his shot selection and streaky shooting. To me he's never been a # 1 option for an offense. He'd have been a solid 2. But instead this yr he's all but had to be the #1 and it just makes our O easier to guard.

As much as I like Fran, it's blatantly obvious he's lost a lot of his drive which I totally understand. He's been pretty underappreciated by the broad fan base, his wife hates it here, his kids took way more shit than they deserved, and his 3rd kid disliked the past 10 years enough that he wanted to go play somewhere else rather than for his old man. He's obviously out of his element in this ocean of corn and all of those things have to take a toll on a guy's ambition and fire after a while. I know I wouldn't last as long as he has.

My guess without knowing the guy is he's looking forward to getting the hell out of here once he retires (whenever that may be) and sitting in the stands watching Jack in Indy being coached by his brother. I'd be very surprised if that guy or his family ever sets foot in Iowa again after he leaves.

This ^^^

Swap rosters with Illinois and Fran wins that game handily too. We just don't have players who can compete at the B1G level. People are way overcomplicating this thing.

People also don't understand that each player has a talent and ability ceiling. if Iowa's guys could play better they would. At this point in the season the sample size is big enough and they just can't get it done consistently.

Something needs to be done about TOs... Coaches stash em till the end so in the last 2 minutes of a game there's like 5 TOs being called one after every possession damn near. It brings close games down to a screeching halt and unwatchable.

Get rid of fouling first, that ends up burning more time than anything. Elam ending all the way.

As far as TO's eliminate the 2 carry-overs from the first half.

Doubt we'll see that day come but those games are fun to watch.

It can legitimately take over 30 mins to play the last 4 of a game. They often have a review or 3 or 4 mixed in there too. They need to have it so teams can't call TOs at the conclusion of a review. They stop the game plenty long enough for that you don't need to tag a TO onto the end of it.

I'm wondering if that horrific car accident involving his youngest son might have taken a lot out of Fran. I can't imagine how traumatic that must've been for him and his wife.

I do disagree slightly with one of our prominent posters who said that he hasn't been appreciated enough by the fan base. I think by and large he has been a popular coach, and Iowa has certainly been loyal to him.

The problem with college athletics today at this level is the fact that the coaches and now many of the players are making an awfully lot of money. Fans see that and have a hard time feeling compassion when the multi-million dollar coach starts losing. It has become a professional league, like the NFL. NFL fan bases can be enormously fickle....it is happening at the college level now as well.
