Heck why stop at 8 teams? They should just go the FCS route now and go to a 24 team playoff.
Took eleven minutes for someone to say that.
It will take a way the uniqueness of the bowl system. Once you go to 8 teams then, eventually, that won't be enough.
I think 4 teams is enough.
So if it's time to start talking, then let's see...
Talk about it for 2 years at high level
Work out the details, another 2 years
2 years to negotiate the contracts.
2 years lag time before new contract starts.
So by 2026, we will have an 8-team playoff!
Why not just do six teams. All p5 champs and one at large. The at large can not be from a p5 conference.
No because the 5 conference champions would move on along with the 3 winners out of the pool of 6 in the at large games - for a total of 8.Six does not really have a nice balanced bracket. Two teams would get a bye and advantage.
The ones with the bye are the two with the strongest sos.Six does not really have a nice balanced bracket. Two teams would get a bye and advantage.
He was misunderstanding what I was saying, 6 doesn't need to be balanced because technically it's a sweet 16 (with division winners). The ones with the bye are the two with the strongest sos.
That would include non cons and promote all schools to be more willing to do one and ones in non cons. Adding to the excitement of the early part of the season.
I'd start by finding a way to rate each conference and the winner of the lowest rated at large game would ideally play the Champ of the strongest conference and the rest seeded and playing in a way that most 16 team brackets wouldHe was misunderstanding what I was saying, 6 doesn't need to be balanced because technically it's a sweet 16 (with division winners).
I'll fill a bracket (this is just an example) I haven't got into seeding at all but this is how I would do it:

Sorry but you still completely missed the whole point of having 6 at large teams. How does a basic 8 team playoff help balance that At large teams unfairly get to play one less game, sitting at home while the best teams battle it out, teams that won their division. How is that fair at all?? Your suggestion does not address that at all, at least I made an effort to even it out.So basically you are describing an 8 team playoff like most people. first off, there has to be a decision about how they are going to manage conference c-ship games. I guess I don't care how each conference does it as long as they have a way of picking the league champion as their conference representative. As far as the leftoever 3 at large spots, I would use a simple computer matrix that measures the scheduled and results for that season and whoever floats to the top get the at large. No committee, no lobbying. None of that horse shit. Use a standardized measurement. If a team loses by one dam point, too bad and better luck next season.
This also would help better non-conference scheduling. In addition, teams like Central Florida who are Div 1 and go undefeated 2 years in a row would likely be in. The conference season still means something and it's not watered down. Every game still important.
Drop mic.
