Playoff expansion: it's about time

So if it's time to start talking, then let's see...

Talk about it for 2 years at high level
Work out the details, another 2 years
2 years to negotiate the contracts.
2 years lag time before new contract starts.

So by 2026, we will have an 8-team playoff!

With the B1G-probably being the most popular conference in the country-being left out of the playoff two years in a row, I think there's movement to get an 8-teamer done ASAP, whenever it's legally possible considering the contract. The PAC 12 has been left out two years in a row as well. Wish it would happen next season.

16 teams. Division winners and 6 at larges that aren't playing a championship game to be played Conference Championship Weekend.

It will take a way the uniqueness of the bowl system. Once you go to 8 teams then, eventually, that won't be enough.

I think 4 teams is enough.

Maybe they can change to play all the traditional bowls on New years, then...

Select the 4 playoff teams after all the bowls. Play the semi-finals the Saturday before the NFL conference championship games. Play the final game the week before the Super Bowl.

Why not just do six teams. All p5 champs and one at large. The at large can not be from a p5 conference.

Six does not really have a nice balanced bracket. Two teams would get a bye and advantage.
No because the 5 conference champions would move on along with the 3 winners out of the pool of 6 in the at large games - for a total of 8.

If we simply allow 8, 5 conference winners and 3 at-large, then some of the at large would get an advantage because they don't play in a championship game, ala Notre Dame.

Will someone please provide the rationale for which eight SEC teams will be deserving each season? That way I won’t be surprised and peeved off. Also would there be an open spot in case Alabama loses and be put into that open spot? We all know how they are worthy and deserving for that special consideration should they lose.

The ones with the bye are the two with the strongest sos.
That would include non cons and promote all schools to be more willing to do one and ones in non cons. Adding to the excitement of the early part of the season.

He was misunderstanding what I was saying, 6 doesn't need to be balanced because technically it's a sweet 16 (with division winners).

I'll fill a bracket (this is just an example) I haven't got into seeding at all but this is how I would do it:

I'd start by finding a way to rate each conference and the winner of the lowest rated at large game would ideally play the Champ of the strongest conference and the rest seeded and playing in a way that most 16 team brackets would

So basically you are describing an 8 team playoff like most people. First off, there has to be a decision about how they are going to manage conference c-ship games. I guess I don't care how each conference does it as long as they have a way of picking the league champion as their conference representative. As far as the leftover 3 at large spots, I would use a simple computer matrix that measures the schedules and game results for that season and whoever floats to the top gets the at large. No committee, no lobbying. None of that horse shit. Use a standardized measurement. If a team loses by one damn point, too bad and better luck next season.Nobody would have a reason to bitch. Just the way it is that year.

This also would help better non-conference scheduling. In addition, teams like Central Florida who are Div 1 and go undefeated 2 years in a row would likely be in. The conference season still means something and it's not watered down. Every game still important.

Drop mic.

Sorry but you still completely missed the whole point of having 6 at large teams. How does a basic 8 team playoff help balance that At large teams unfairly get to play one less game, sitting at home while the best teams battle it out, teams that won their division. How is that fair at all?? Your suggestion does not address that at all, at least I made an effort to even it out.

Pic the mic back up, you have some 'splainin to do.

Nah. I disagree. Not in college football when you can have a small bracket of teams that all have to play. That would just add another layer or complication that they are trying to get away from and another reason that certain teams would bitch.

The excitement (early season games) would come with teams scheduling better in case they have to fight for an at large instead of automatic bid. Would do the same.
