Player by Player Iowa Hoops Review

he's 6'5", or at least close to that. and thin too. where is that 15# coming from?

I believe they have said he has put on ten or fifteen lbs from last year. And it is noticeable. I think he needs to slim down a little and that may also help his shot. Gatens seemed to develop a better shot when he got to a better playing weight for himself. Sometimes they try to bulk players up and it doesn't work out...ie Matt gatens and Mel basabe. I think that happened with ogelsby.

Pretty good CJS. I'd only disagree in a couple of areas.

Marble does get his shot off the dribble. A lot of times he gets fouled on the shot or dribble. Sometimes it just doesn't look smooth; at times it looks real smooth.

Ogelsby is a B1G caliber player because every opposing coach defends him like he is a B1G caliber player. Even when he was in a sophomore season long shooting slump.

I dont think every big 10 coach defends him like a big ten player. He is 1 dimensional and they play him that way. Force him to put the ball on the floor to score and he can't against Big Ten teams. So they play him dribble used all the time. Do coaches ever put their top perimeter defender on him? How much focus do other teams put on him in scouting reports? I dont know the answer to the 2nd questions, but i bet its not much.

1. look at him, hes too big for a shooting guard
2. he's slow
3. they have said several times this year he has gained 15 lbs

1. so what else is he going to play?
2. is that really going to change?
3. cause he was rail thin when he got to Iowa.

I feel Marble could hit the weight room alittle harder. He's pretty slender yet and against teams that play physical against him he seems to get knocked to the floor pretty easily. You look at him and a guy like Hardaway jr and he's not even close to as physically put together as him. It'd help his game out a ton if he could get stronger. Wish Eric May's weight room habbits would rub off on him

15 pounds of muscle on a 19yo , 6'5" guy didn't slow him down but it may have changed his shot just enough to hurt. I personally think he's more of an asset than liability..just my opinion.

If you're talking to me I've never said any Iowa player is garbage. Uthoff may start but it won't be in place of White. If he starts then Basabe is back on the bench.

Youre right, Uhtoff is garbage, and Whites starting spot is 100% lock...

No one is even implying that. Just saying let's not set the expectations too high before he even plays a minute. I think we all hope he is as good or better than white...cause that would be really good for the Hawks.

Fran Subs Basabe out 2 much as it is now and the majority of the time it doesn't work same 4 Woody let Him foul out .His D is to Good I don't care how bad he's getting the ball stripped. He will make up for it the same as Badabe does in other ways. A White way is getting to the line. Perfect Six man

JO does not need to lose an ounce. Now if you want to talk about Zach, I'll listen to that.... The coaches changed Josh's shot. That is where the problem lies. That will be corrected. I still have high hopes for JO.

Ogelsby - is a solid defender. He is a good ballhandler. He is a very good passer (second best post entry passer on the team behind gesell). If he learns to get his shot off in better rhythm and better position so he isn't fading back or to the sides he will raise his shooting percentage and demand more time on the court.
Josh is not a solid defender. As others are stating he is too slow to stay in front of anybody in a man to man situation so they play zone nearly all the time he is in the game.

I think you're wrong. Every team knew when JO was on the court and they were glued to him when he walked away from the score table onto the court.

I agree with everything in the first post except for Marble and JO. I think Gesell, not Marble, is the best player on the team, but Marble is the best scorer and has a scorer's mentality like no one else on the team has, thus he leads the team in scoring. The only problem I have with Oglesby is that he is on the floor as a three-point specialist and we run a play for him like he's Marshall Henderson, but sometimes he doesn't look to shoot when he catches it. Also, if you look at all the elite 3-point shooters in the game, none of them release the shot as slowly as JO does. But I don't think it's fair to say he's not a Big Ten caliber player, only because of those points.

Fran switched defenses from man to zone no matter who was in the lineup. Ogelsby is a better defender than most of the backcourt players on the team. I will include all 1, 2, and 3s. So we had this year: gesell, clemmons, marble, ogelsby, may, white, and Ingram. Jo is better defensively on the outside than marble, white, Ingram (I say Ingram because he didn't really play against good players). And I would say that gesell and him are the same. Clemmons is better on the ball but he slacks a little off the ball. The only one head and shoulders better is may. Gatens was very similar to ogelsby as a defender and he was our best his senior year. If it was all about physical gifts making you a great defender than Aaron craft wouldn't be as great as he is. Jo can defend and does it well.
