Player by Player Iowa Hoops Review

I agree with everything in the first post except for Marble and JO. I think Gesell, not Marble, is the best player on the team, but Marble is the best scorer and has a scorer's mentality like no one else on the team has, thus he leads the team in scoring. The only problem I have with Oglesby is that he is on the floor as a three-point specialist and we run a play for him like he's Marshall Henderson, but sometimes he doesn't look to shoot when he catches it. Also, if you look at all the elite 3-point shooters in the game, none of them release the shot as slowly as JO does. But I don't think it's fair to say he's not a Big Ten caliber player, only because of those points.

I think I tend to agree with you about mike gesell being the best player and marble the best scorer. Gesell seems to make everyone around him better. I am not sure that marble does that. And the best player on the team typically makes everyone else better.

AS LONG AS JO SHOOTS 80% IN PRACTICE NOBODY WILL TAKE HIS MINUTES. COMMON SENSE PEOPLE. FRAN HAS FAITH IT'LL TRANSLATE TO THE GAME.

Fran switched defenses from man to zone no matter who was in the lineup. Ogelsby is a better defender than most of the backcourt players on the team. I will include all 1, 2, and 3s. So we had this year: gesell, clemmons, marble, ogelsby, may, white, and Ingram. Jo is better defensively on the outside than marble, white, Ingram (I say Ingram because he didn't really play against good players). And I would say that gesell and him are the same. Clemmons is better on the ball but he slacks a little off the ball. The only one head and shoulders better is may. Gatens was very similar to ogelsby as a defender and he was our best his senior year. If it was all about physical gifts making you a great defender than Aaron craft wouldn't be as great as he is. Jo can defend and does it well.

Gessel is a better on ball defender than Ogelsby.

Gesell is better on ball but ogelsby is better off ball...to me it is a wash and they are even in my book. Considering gesell is usually guarding someone with the ball in their hands more than the guy ogelsby tends to guard I would say that is how it should be.

I, too, agree with this. Watch Marble when he doesn't have the ball, then watch the other 1s, 2s, and 3s and compare their activity levels, screen setting, etc. Marble stands around way too much and waits to get the ball. Too much of a black hole at times in the offense when he does get the ball. Needs to improve his passing inthe half court as well. Still, the best scorer and creator by far. If he works to improve his ball handling and quickness will be MVP candidate next year.
