Plan C

I am confident the staff will land a PG eventually, but I really hope Dillard's son is going to get offered a walk on spot. He has not been offered by any of the 6 schools that are interested-Iowa being one of them and IMO, we simply cannot endure another year of living on the edge at the PG spot. Cartwright was a warrior all season, but it hurt his game down the stretch and every minute Marble is stuck playing the point is a minute he isn't developing as a wing player.

I am sure Dillard would prefer a scholarship, but have him walk on year one and see what happens.

Factually speaking, we know we are still not on Plan A? Because an offered recruit commits elsewhere? Do we know that Washpun wasn't the "fallback", aka Plan A?

I'm beginning to think that no one really knows what FM's plan A, B, or C really is.

You could be right and I am not in panic mode, but the PG spot is one that I feel has to be addressed before this team has any chance at improving short and long term. How long has it been since Iowa graduated a guard that played / stayed 4 years? Horner? Let's hope for some good news this week.

Two wrongs don't make a right. Dillard has been a giant ZERO so far. I mean seriously this guy had washed out of coaching, but was hired because he was supposed to have AAU connections. Well all the players that were at his Nike camp are now committed and Iowa doesn't have one. Also, he actually was sent on a recruiting trip, which made him miss a conference game, and he struck out. He doesn't have one recruit attributed to him and the players never talk about his coaching as a factor. Complete disaster hire, particularly when you consider Iowa didn't get a Chicago guy.

Now you want to give a scholarship to his kid that has no major offers? Seriously, that would be like pouring gasoline on a fire to put it out. Maybe you don't fire Sherm, but you don't put more money in his pocket. You say, Sherm you haven't produced, we need some of that scratch back in the general fund and offer a walk-on spot.

And then we sit back and watch another coach's walk-on son try to run our offense.

To all those who are freaking out, Fran and the staff are becoming victims of there own success. They have revitalized the program so bringing hope. They have gone out and brought in top tier talent for visits and missed so far. These kids wouldn't even be visiting if it wasn't for the staff. The only reason half maybe more are paying attention to recruiting is due to the excitement that Fran has brought. Did you really think that year one there would be 4* and 5* kids waiting in line to sign the dotted line ? I know Iowa missed on Wes, He felt like a back up plan well he was. Could Iowa have wined and dined Wes from the beginning and maybe landed him maybe, but I will take swing and misses with Guerro and Company any day versus settling on others.

Rumor has it that Dillard is handling the recruiting of Darius Paul,6'8'' junior forward out of Warren HS,northern Chicagoland recruit. Paul is the younger brother of Brandon Paul,Illini sophmore. I have had my eye on Paul,as they were in the state tourny this year...kid has grown 4 inches the last year and a half, and is very quick.
The Illini are pretty full-up on schollys for 2012,so Iowa might be able to jump in there on Darius.

As far as Dillard's ''AAU bonafides''....I think it is the relationships with the AAU coaches that is really important, and I assume he has that as a NIKE director of their AAU program. Kids come and go, but the coaches are the constant, and the key to future recruits. I am going to see how it goes this summer and fall before jumping to firm conclusions on this staff.

Caarhawk, you remind me of that drunk guy at a bar who puts a blindfold on, gets spun around twenty times, and then thinks he can hit that bullseye playing darts. Eventually, for that to be possible, someone is going to have to at least point you in the right direction. So let me help you out with that.

Right now, Dillard is creating the most relationships within the program. From all I've heard, he connects more to recruits than any other assistant(which surprised me as well....I would have guessed Francis). I don't believe he was Guerrero's main recruiter, but he ended up being the one who was with him most of the time and for good reason. In a year, you're gonna be so happy you didn't get your way on this.

I know so many of you are all about recruiting stars. I imagine this is a tough time period for you. But I will tell you right now how Iowa basketball will return to glory(so pay attention). First, we are currently creating great relationships with 2012-2013 recruits. Second, we will make our first noise on the hardwood the way most mid-majors do....by having an experienced team who has developed over time make a run in the tourney. Third, that will jump start our recruiting and you will start to see more young talent committing.

There ya have it. I know it's easy to go all chicken little right now and not look at the big picture. But have a little patience and maybe you can keep that high blood pressure from unnecessarily rising. :)

Good to hear from a voice of reason, who might actually have some inside info....thanks for the input. I understand frustration of fans, but it is too early to go circular firing squad on this staff. I remain impressed with Dillards resume that indicates that he has to know a ton of AAU coaches, who as in the famous quote from Dazed and Confused..are like high school girls, they stay the same age, while the players come and go.

I will never forget that Washington Post article on the woes of Gary Williams at MD with local AAU coaches....where the one strong AAU team's coach said that Williams never called, but Matt Painter and Thad Matta call all the time....you have to work these guys, almost as much as the recruits.

I'm beginning to think that no one really knows what FM's plan A, B, or C really is.

My guess is that plan A was for Cully Payne to stay and for Iowa to sign a perimeter player and a big man. Because Payne could back up Cartwright, getting players at a specific position was probably less important that just getting the best guys available (especially since we aren't going to be a great team next year anyway.)

Now that Cully is gone (which it really does seem like was a surprise to the team/coaches), they have an extra scholarship but they also have to get a point guard. Given those parameters, the Washpun offer seemed more like a flyer than anything else. They got in late on a guy they weren't wowed by all along, but figured why not try to wrap things up with a guy that lives down the road. The good news is that he committed to TN with enough time left to go find someone else.

I still don't see this staff panicking and offering someone who doesn't belong on a major-college basketball court. There's probably no better way to kill your momentum than committing four years to a guy who doesn't improve the team-- or, as we have come to know it, the Lickliter special.

In other words, I wouldn't get hung up on plans A, B, or X, and I doubt the coaches are either. All they can do is evaluate talent, offer the guys that fit the plan, and try like hell to convince them to come to campus. You can't make a 17-year old do anything unless you are running a dirty program.

CRAP! I was going by a bad source. They had White attributed incorrectly. Went to Rivals, which is where I should have been in the first place, and saw White is attributed to Dillard. Since, everyone knows I am psyched about White, makes me DB fir the week, month, whatever.

I will officially back off the bash Sherm bandwagon.

Way to step up and admit that you are wrong! Also in your little rant about Sherm, you said that we shouldn't give Ben a scholarship. The OP said to offer him a walk-on spot on the team, not a scholarship.

My thought on Dillard's son is that he would give us more depth at the guard spot without taking up a scholarship year one. Assuming we land another guard, having a third combo guard as a walk on would give us some insurace against injuries, academic / off the court issues, etc. With Cartwright graduating next year, Dillard could move to a scholarship player in 2012 along with the yet to be signed guard in this class.

I have no idea if Dillard's son is on the radar or what the family dynamics are like between Ben and Sherm...just a thought. Ideally we would bring in two guards this year, but we have too many other needs IMO.
