Peyton Mansell Spring 2019

While watching Rob’s video of the final spring practice; I couldn’t help but notice how much of a Drew Tate-like, play maker, Peyton Mansell looked like. At about the 8:49 mark he stepped up in the pocket and scrambled for a for sure first down before a whistle was blown, but he damn near might have housed it for about 50+. At about 9:10 he threw a dime to Nico on an out route for a first. Then he capped off the drive with an over the shoulder fade in the corner of the end zone to Smith. Ran mostly shotgun the whole drive. Sargent was in I believe and had a nice run. Can’t wait to see what the QB race will be like this time next year.

Like Stanley, he will have his share of good Payton/bad Payton moments. He tried to throw a deep out in mop up duty in last year's Illinois blowout and nearly threw a pick six, which would have spoiled the shutout. Then there was the trick play at Penn State.

He would have been a nice change-up for a series here and there in games where the offense was struggling, like Northwestern. But the coaches have to be open to doing it.

Let them battle. It could push both of them. Would Kirk and Brian pull the trigger if Peyton is better? Hayden didn't hesitate to go to a young Matt Rodgers in 1989 over fifth year senior Tom Poholsky when Oregon blew us out in the opener and the team responded better to Matt. And Poholsky started much of 1986 as a redshirt freshman. Would this coaching staff don't he same?

If Peyton is #2 qb at the start of the season, or whoever is #2, he needs to get some game time play in the non-conf games whether it be mop up or as a change of pace in the 2nd and third qtrs. KF needs to get into the 21st century of preparing your qbs to go in bcuz of injuries and to get them ready for next year. Under KF we as fans have seen many times when the backup was not prepared.

I like what I read from the OP and having a potential Drew Tate-like qb is exciting.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

KF in the 21st century? Shoot, he is stuck in the 19th century.

Develop a QB for the next with game time? Please. QBs learn from watching.

Mansell should be starting IMO

From what I know from reading about him since he’s been at Iowa he’s a gamer. He’s had to battle for the starting position at almost all levels of play and has eventually won the spot every time and performed. The guy just has the “it” factor and makes plays. I hope the Ferentz’s put the best player on the field.

Agree it would be nice to have some proof from a real game how good Mansel is. So far we just don't have much to go on. Although I also agree he has looked sharp at times in practice.

The whole line from the coaches that both QB's are equal in the battle for backup is, of course, baloney. The coaches know who they prefer but are not going say it , which is a good strategy whether it's actually already settled or not. Whoever emerges as the backup will need to continue to work at it for sure.

I love it that Iowa has recruited some very fine QB’s with lots of upside and some variety in their skill sets. I will let the coaches decide, especially KO, who to play when. The future looks bright.

Sounds like Stanzi a little too, maybe a mix of Stanzi/Tate?
