Peyton Mansell Gunning for Hawkeyes Starting QB Job

When I hear his name, I'm not sure if it makes me think of Peyton Manning first or Johnny Manziel first. Maybe he's a mixture of the two, as contrasting as they are. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

I think the same, but when I see his picture, all I can think is "stay gold, Ponyboy".

You know, I never watched his film until now. Peyton's got a college body already...and he's got some serious athleticism. It also appears he has some arm strength. Now, they weren't college level defenders coming at him, but he didn't waste much time in finding an opening to use his feet. He appeared to feel pressure well, and knew what to do when he felt it. Interesting prospect...folks, we have a sleeper.

Having a Frosh QB land in Iowa City making a BIG CANNONBALL SPLASH - DEEP end o' the pool as soon as he hits campus??
I say give that kid the ball! Oh wait...Sorry, I forgot for a brief second who our LHC still is.

Never mind...wait your turn kid.

Rob I don't think he's gonna fit. We like guys who expect to redshirt and ride the bench, play special teams for 2 years and then maybe play as a junior when someone gets hurt. Don't need any aspirational types in that locker room.
So AJ expects to redshirt? Or do you not like him. ;-)

The fallacy that certain kids don't come in looking to play is wrong. Things have changed pretty dramatically in that regard. Personally, I think recruits have Brandon Wegher to thank for that. Kirk had Paki O'Meara starting the season and when he saw Brandon perform in the second game...decided freshman can play. We've had several step in over the past four or five years.

We almost lost to UNI thanks to that ridiculous decision.

True.
Personally I like the fact that he is a dual threat. CJB's feet helped Iowa to 12-0. I know we're a pro-style offense and I'm cool with that. But using a QBs natural gifts is a way to keep a defense honest and help Iowa move the ball.

I'm convinced CJ's feet absolutely won at least 2(maybe 3) games in '15 that we very possibly lose without his scrambling and willingness to sacrifice himself. I also believe we win 1-2 more games last year if he's mostly healthy(by healthy I mean able to scramble, move laterally, and run) . I think he started the year at about 85%....and it slowly went down from there. I think there was 2-3 games he was at about 60%, maybe less as far as ability to run.

CJ's toughness played a huge role in giving us a pretty special year in '15. I think that toughness in '15 put him in a tough spot in '16.

Looking back, I guess we could see from the beginning Mansel's mobility as something that could set him apart. It might be nice to get a QB in the game that can run, maybe just for a series or 2.

Changing the look against a tired D can be a game changer. NIU was already on the ropes when he came in, and he abused em

If Stanley continues to have poor ball placement and misses throws, I think they'll start looking more at PM - especially if the shows that he gets the mental part of the game. His poor ball placement was offset by nice pass catching last year...this year it could just as easily be interceptions

Its not all about throwing the ball. At Iowa QB has to read defenses and get the team out of a bad play or into the optimal play at the line of scrimmage.

Not sure when a #2 gets the chance to demonstrate that once the season starts.

While this is absolutely true I always chuckle when I see or hear comments like this. Because how many times have we seen an Iowa QB audible and then proceed to hand off the ball to a poor RB and watch him run into a wall of defenders?

Either the offensive staff is very poor at teaching it or the QBs they're recruiting are having a hard time getting it.

The answer to your question is 99.9999% of the time. The .0001 happened when the Iowa QB acidently called the wrong audible.

Ideally, Stanley has another good year, stays healthy, and we have three more blowouts so we can insert Mansell for some quality PT but still keep the redshirt on him, and save his 4 years of eligibility.

If he's that competitive, he'll go elsewhere especially if the current guy is struggling.

Then again KF did play BB what about 30 percent of the snaps? Who can figure KF out. My gut is that he was embarrassed that it was obvious to almost everyone who should have been playing and never did something like that again.

Mansell redshirted last year.

The most popular player on any team in CFB is the back-up QB.
Yeah. Backup has a couple of completions and a rushing TD and now he’s going to replace a starter that’s 9-5.

No. Not going to happen.

Doubtful he gets meaningful snaps unless Stanley is hurt.

That came to mind as I wrote it.. audible...hand off to RB running to the right and stuff. Rinse repeat.
