Petras Stats

Until team

Until teams start crowding the box with 8 players and then we will be forced to rely on Petros. What then?

If it was that simple then why didn't Minnesota do that? You get good line play and blocking you can be successful running the ball with 8 in the box. But I'd like to see them try to cover our receivers 1 on 1.

So we are back to relying on Petros to take advantage of 1 on 1 coverage. I'm not confident that Petros can succeed in doing that. Time will tell.

For a first year QB he's doing good. He makes some mistakes. So far I haven't seen the total bone head plays that Stanley made. His upside is very bright.

I'm not calling for his head, but not giving him a free pass either. He's a first year starter, not a first year QB, and the fact that he didn't get the meaningful snaps earlier in his career to have a better grasp on being a first year starter is entirely on the coaching staff. In college, there is no such thing as career backups, and regardless of what goes on you have to have backups that are ready to see the field because you know you only have 4 years per player. I'm expecting a learning curve, however if the new guy isn't ready to go by the time he's called upon you either need to do a better job finding a replacement/backup or your not doing enough recruiting. I don't blame Petras one bit for his struggles as a first year QB, I blame the staff.

It's too early to tell if he thinks he's Favre and that there's no window he can't squeeze the ball in or if he's just not seeing the field all that well. Which is what I lean towards. He hasn't played enough to have seen all the different situations. He doesn't go through progressions all that well yet. He's just learning on the fly and with him throwing the ball so darn hard he's just not all that accurate. I wonder if he lowered it down an octave if that'd help with his accuracy some. Our offense depends on Qbs making the layups. You have to complete the screen passes and short crossers to the receivers in space so they can run with it. Now he's thrown a couple pretty balls up to Brandon Smith in the redzone. I'd love to see more of that. (not sure why we don't)

If the PSU game is going south on Iowa at the half, Padilla better be ready and we'd better have a game plan for using him in the second half.

He didn't get a spring and kind of had a f'd up fall. I am willing to give him more time and a pass this year, but at the same time I can clearly state that I don't think he's been very impressive. Other QB's before him got their feet wet against much weaker competition. That said, this season has made me appreciate what we had with Nate Stanley all the more, a guy that was just railed on even with good stats.

I'm right there with you. I'm not sold on the guy yet. He could end up pretty good. But we can't pretend that at this point he could possibly not be all that good either. Because so far that's where it's leaning. So far the one game he was really kinda asked to go win the game (Northwestern) he really wasn't able to do it. He's just not accurate enough... Yet. All that said due to what you wrote he hasn't exactly gotten a fair shake either. It's frustrating when you look around (Fn Wisconsin) at what some other programs have going on at their QB positions and wonder WTF. Why can't we have that. This kid is 3 yrs in the program he's not a totally green apple. But not every kid/situation is the same. So let's let it play out and see. I've pretty much chalked this whole season up to being an asterisk anyway. Hopefully he and the team can look good/better down the stretch and next yr we can hit the ground running.

Have any of you heard of Garza's dad's individual performance coaching practice? Seems like it would be fitting

Petras and Stanley in their 1st season vs. MN, PU, NW, and MSU:

Petras 78-145 781 yds 53.8% 3 TD 4 Int
Stanley 66-124 784 yds 53.2% 3 TD 3 Int

I guess in all fairness to Petras he probably has those numbers are based off of his first 3 games as a starter and Stanley's most likely had a half season's worth of starts in by then.

Penn State will be a great test for him. State will crowd the box and shut down our running game. That is what they do.

He is going to have to complete passes to win that game, and not turn the ball over.

Nebraska to a lesser extent will try to do the same thing.

Illinois won't be able to stop our running game.

Interesting. I do think Petras is going to be good.....maybe we will see it this Saturday.

I think Kirk and co have actually handled QB controversies pretty well in the past. I doubt they move on from Petras mid-season given how unusual 2020 has proven to be.

But if Penn State/future opponents stack the box, I think Padilla could be a good change up for a few series. Run some zone read and give the defense something else to plan for. The wildcat with Goodson and all the jet sweep action have been nice tweaks to the zone stretch/play action bread and butter approach.

Stanley did have decent numbers to start the year, including 300+ yards against the vaunted defense of a certain Big 12 powerhouse. Can't say it's apples to apples, but I was curious so I looked it up and was surprised that it was so even.

Yeah no chance they make a move this yr. He'd have to throw like 3 strait bad interceptions in a row to have it considered. Because of what you mentioned. It's 2020. In a nutshell it's just a crazy off kilter yr. So let him develop take his lumps hopefully improve and win some games down the stretch here and let the cards fall where they do. If he continues to struggle and we can have some semblance of a 'normal' off season to practice then open up the competition and see what we have in Padilla and Hogan going into next spring. But I don't see opening it up now or at any point in the middle of this crazy year doing any good.

Look at his numbers between the last 2 games and the first 2. Iowa wins when they can run the ball and not have to rely on Petras.
Iowa established the run against Purdue had they just kept with it. Northwestern was a complete shit-show because we didn’t even try to establish the run, even with a 17-0 lead!!!. Iowa should be 4-0..
