Petras Stats

I'm not sold on Petras, but I'm a long way off on bailing, too. He's made plays where he's looked very good - I think he's got the tools. Kind of a cliche, but he strikes me as someone for whom the game hasn't slowed down for yet. HS and practice are != game experience. Give him more time and let's see if we see fewer oopsies and more positive plays.

I think Kirk and co have actually handled QB controversies pretty well in the past. I doubt they move on from Petras mid-season given how unusual 2020 has proven to be.

But if Penn State/future opponents stack the box, I think Padilla could be a good change up for a few series. Run some zone read and give the defense something else to plan for. The wildcat with Goodson and all the jet sweep action have been nice tweaks to the zone stretch/play action bread and butter approach.

While this is true, I also think Kirk and Co. are the biggest factors in past QB controversies. I'm a firm believer that every year a player should have to earn their starting spot and that those positions should never be guaranteed or held on simply because a player started the year before. The problem I see at QB is that other than the starter there is no depth chart, because very rarely does the back up take any meaningful reps and when they do see the field they're almost always put out there to hand the ball off and chew up clock. IMO the controversies exist, because every time we lose a QB who's proven themselves we replace them with someone who has no real game experience and is as raw as the competition in terms of proving what they're capable of on the field. So while I think they've generally gotten it right a clipboard holding all-american practice player may not be that far ahead of the talent that has been brought in.

Yards per game 192.8 95th
Yards per completion 10.6 97th
Completion % 53.3 % 107th
Yards per attempt 5.6 110th
Average passer rating 101.9 108th

And frankly we have played some pretty bad defenses with exception of a good Northwestern defense

Not going to win championships with that. Maybe it will improve but if it doesn't then who
If it was that simple then why didn't Minnesota do that? You get good line play and blocking you can be successful running the ball with 8 in the box. But I'd like to see them try to cover our receivers 1 on 1.
Umm, first year starter and 5th youngest team in the country. Check back next year.

Ummmm, but THIS year isn’t over yet. Yes I know they are young and it’s Petras first year but that’s all the more reason why they need to be able to run the ball. You shouldn’t want your first year QB throwing the ball 40-50 times a game.

Agreed. For the same reasoning, not shoving a broken down Beathard out there for the entire bowl game beat down. Let his backup gets some reps. The coaching can be perplexing.
