Petras and Mansell next year

I hate that they bi-passed Mansell. I've said it before and I will keep saying, what I feel like what BF wants to do is exactly what Mansell is built to do. I feel like this is a huge missed opportunity.
I agree like why even recruit him if your not willing to. I dunno. That said I'm not at practice. Maybe Petras is head and shoulders better. We have no way of knowing till we see them on the field.

I’ve heard this before and I’m wondering where it comes from? What gives someone the belief that BF wants a running QB? I mean technically he’s a disciple of the Patriots who have had the least mobile QB in the NFL for many years. Iowa runs a pro style offense with a couple wrinkles. If Petras is the guy following Stanley it’s pretty apparent they want big arm QBs. So again where is this belief that they want a running QB coming from?
I just think why recruit a kid like Mansell if you won't use his skills. It just felt like the kid wasn't going to get a fair shake. Kinda like what Iowa did to Boyle and the back and forth they had with him changing to WR. I thought kid would have been a heck of a mobile QB myself but Iowa never gave him a shot it didn't seem like. I felt bad for Boyle one of the best HS QBs the state of Iowa has really ever had. But came to Iowa where mobile QBs are delegated to WR or the bench.

Hindsight is 20/20. They didn't recruit Mansell knowing they'd recruit Petras a year later, and they didn't know Petras was gonna pass Mansell up.

Very true. I couldn't tell you how far ahead they'd been in on Petras and trying to get him. But it's pretty evident the type of QB the coaches prefer.

So, I know this is a little out there, but what if Petras was QB2 this year because the coaches wanted to see what he could do. The coaches thought Petras and Mansell were fairly even. The coaches knew that snaps for QB2 would really only happen if Stanley got hurt and they knew what they had in Mansell as he had been QB2 the past two years. Now going into spring Petras and Mansell have had the opportunity to both be QB2 so they go into spring on more level footing.

Just a thought.

Would Mansell get this much fan attention if he was from say North Dakota? Or does the fact that he hails from the high school football Mecca that is Texas create some initial bias in his favor in the fanbase's minds?

It looks like Petras is going to get the job, but by all accounts he is a lot like Stanley in being not very mobile with a big arm. So what do you all think about the coaches making a wildcat package with Mansell that can be used in short yardage and red zone situations? Could he pull it off? Or what about the Padilla kid?

That is so not Kirk Ferentz and Iowa.

If wildcat, why not Tracy or Goodson? Doesn't need to be a QB. For those who remember him, Dominique Dafney who was a Hawk and went to Indiana State would come in and run their wild cat. Watched him when they played UNI this fall at the dome.

You assume BF has free reign and that KF doesn't have any control. I think that is a bad assumption.

Lets be honest as well. There are not many pure pro style Qbs around anymore so I think you need to choose what you think will work and where you see potential. The back-up is always one snap away from being in the game so at least we can have the argument rather than having one horse in our barn.

Hawk coaches aren't necessarily known for making wise moves....

It may have taken longer than it should have, but they eventually went with Stanzi over Christensen & CJ over Rudock. Those were wise moves that ended up panning out.

Not necessarily a running QB, but a mobile QB. I feel there are things in BFs playbook like a roll out and sprint out and more read option type of stuff.

I think BF is looking to modernize the offense, but KF wont let it happen. Thats my take though, and there is a good chance my wants are clouding my perception.

But let's not forget that Ruddy was an NFL QB for a while - not as long as Stanzi or CJ but he was there.

Yeah that doesn't seem like something KF would do... But I can see the logic to it. I just doubt most coaching staffs would have that line of thought to how handle their QB room.

Lol, you guys are talking about the Iowa non-offense???You might as well be talking about cars rusting.

I am sure that there are a few that have fantasies of Brian being this great offensive guru who one day will take over the Iowa program when papa leaves and show ole pops how an offense is suppose to be run. Then again these same people probably believe in Santa Clause or that Donald Trump is a virtuous moral person. :p

When BF first came on as the OL coach, and he started talking some smack on radio shows and twitter (think twitter was about the Kinnick experience) a lot of us thought "Oh, maybe he will loosen his dad up in regards to play calling". And there have been some changes, but I'm not sure they were due to BF but more due to a potential Lick transfer issue after the 2014 season and bowl game.

BF has shown next to nothing in regards to being this offensive genius that is just waiting in the wings to explode when KF retires. In fact when BF does take over the program, there's a very good chance it'll be exactly what the KF defenders use as their excuse "what if things get worse!!!!!"

This is the only offense and style of football he knows. Yes he learned some things at the Patriots, and how has that translated? While New England is struggling this year on offense, it's because they have one of the worst WR groups in the league....it's catching up to them. This year's Iowa team had the best group of WR in a long time, and while the stats were good compared to years past, we couldn't score points and beat anyone good.

The other issue with BF is that he doesn't have his dad's political savvy. There is a reason KF never says anything, and it's so nothing ever gets thrown back at him. So far since BF has become OC he's:

Punched a hole through a press box wall
Harassed a reply official during halftime in their box
Had snide comments / issues during press conferences that drew some bad press
Picked up unsportsmanlike conduct in a WIN for berating referees

If BF doesn't produce when he's coach, the above will get him run out of town quickly. Iowa nice is one of the main reasons KF has lasted as long as he has
