Needs an asterisk on the 7-5 2017 regular season. The only reason Penn State isn’t included here is that they lost the Tax Slayer bowl in 2015 after a 7-5 regular season. Since then, they have and two 11 win seasons and a 9 win season, plus 9-2 so far this season. They are well ahead of Iowa over this span, despite playing a tougher division. Iowa is consistently above average since 2015, but not by much, they are at best the fifth ranked Big Ten team over this span, with a high number of one-score losses.

THE PARAMETER IS 8 WIN TEAMS, BUD. YOU GOT SERVED.

And another thing, it ain't the TaxSlayer Bowl, it is the HawkSlayer Bowl.

In your opinion what is the more impressive 5 season resume?

MSU's B1G championship and playoff appearance. A 12 win season and a 10 win season but also a 3-9, 7-6, and probable 6-6 finish, and a 2-0 edge over Iowa (including the biggest game in the history of the Iowa program)

or

Iowa's more steady stretch. One division championship, A 12 win season, but no other double digit win seasons. Worse season during that stretch was 8-5

I was discussing this with a buddy this morning and we kept going back and forth.

Pfft, MSU is a joke. I don't ever want to go 3-9. I guess maybe if someone offered me 3 consecutive national titles and then said "but then you will fall to 3-9 the year after the third one" I would take that deal. But otherwise, no way.

It's an interesting debate.

Considering the off-field issues in EL and where they programs are after those five seasons, I would lean to Iowa.

Let me ask you...after watching the Penn State games the last three years...do you really think they are well ahead of Iowa as a program. With Sequan Barkley...it took the last play of the game to get a win three years ago. It took maybe the strangest, worst performance in Stanley's career to gift a win to them last year. And this year...well...our offensive line was flat out struggling to block anyone...and they beat us by 5 points...one score.

The reality is that the programs are very close and extremely competitive. The difference...well...certainly big plays by big play players. They made the big plays in big moments. This is something Iowa has not been able to do in the most important games. Wisconsin this year is the perfect example...the 2pt conversion...so close.

This is a fair point that can't be argued. It would be one thing if MSU had another B1G championship season & playoff appearance coming down the pipe but we can probably all agree that would be a pretty shocking development in 2020 or 2021

Plus with PSU and Michigan surging forward spells doom for MSU.

Iowa in the meantime appears pretty stable going forward. The West is getting tougher but how much longer can Minnesota and Purdue keep their coaches? With the way they coach offense in today's football culture, the offers will keep coming.

The only program in the conference that is well ahead of Iowa is OSU. Iowa is like a player or two and some depth away from being #2.

The very long time hawk fans like myself remember the great last half of the 50's and early sixties. The bad seasons of the 60's-70's just trying to enjoy a rare win and hoping to get past those losing and a .500 season(s). The younger fans can not even believe how wild and great it was when Commings' team beat penn state on the road. We and I have perspective. But since Fry actually took the hawks to the top ranking it can be done. So we have the perspective of great football accomplishments. KF has come pretty close in 2002, 09, and 15. But we also see some of his teams just under perform. I think most fans are good about recent seasons but know that just a 20% improvement in the offense means possible West Div and Big 10 crowns and possible playoff appearances.

a few years back I was fussing about being stuck on 7 wins. And now I'm fussing about being stuck on 8 wins. Have a shot at 9 or 10 wins. and I'm still fussing.

Wonder how the fans would be if Iowa had an electric offense and mediocre defense with the same result.

KF's first 10 years seem to be 3 years up and 3 years down. The 2nd 10 years seems far more consistent.

The fussing will always be "what could have been?"

What if CJ had been healthy in 2015 & 2016? Watch him in that ISU game in 2015. That was the CJ we should have had for 2 years. But for the next 2 seasons he seemed to be walking awkwardly on every step.

What if MVB & Kittle would have stayed healthy in 2016?

What if Iowa could match a QB like CJ with the skill guys Stanley had in 2018?

What if Iowa could build a solid OL that can run and pass block? Particularly when 3 guys on the current OL will play in the NFL?

We could go on forever here, especially on the offensive side.

Comgratulations.

Iowa used to be thought of a team that finished 7-6 most years, sometimes 8-5.

Now its thought of as a team that finishes 8-5 most years, sometimes 9-4. I guess that's improvement.

But if you ask non-Iowa fans what they they think of Iowa, they usually say "Same old Iowa. They always run the same old offense, and always finish with the same old record. Always a decent tesm but not great team."

Wins since 2015:

OSU 59
Wisconsin 51
Michigan 47
Penn St. 47 (12 wins over non P5 teams) 35 wins over P5 teams
Iowa 45 (9 wins over non P5 teams) 36 wins over P5 teams

Iowa is right there with that team you are so bragging up. It is funny that you make excuses for Penn st. 7 win season, but bash the shit out of Iowa for it's 8 win seasons.

Who exactly is getting the most out of their program, Ferentz or Franklin?

Recruiting rankings since 2013:

Penn St. (43, 24, 15, 21, 12, 5, 11)
Iowa (53, 59, 58, 42, 40, 40, 42)

Iowa has played 5 top 25 teams and is 2-3 vs them. Penn St. is now 2-2 vs top 25 teams. These two programs are not that far apart.
