People Don't Understand Woodbury's purpose.

Hayes is listed at 250 lbs....gabe is listed at 225. White is a better position defender which is what you need against wisky.

Wisconsins site lists Hayes at 235, Iowas lists Gabe at 237.

Hayes may be heavier but Gabe is clearly bigger than 225, and am fairly sure Iowa site is correct.

As far as White being a better post defender, I completely disagree.

Espn has Hayes at 250 and gabe at 225. Osu just today made gabe look bad down low. And they aren't as talented down low as wisky. White is a smarter defender who keeps his body in a position to make steals which is what you need on Hayes someone with pesky hands to steal as he will dribble too much. He will use his shoulder to move gabe. As gabe is to shot block happy. I am not saying white is necessarily a better defender as he isn't a great defender. What I am saying is his strengths on defense play into Hayes weaknesses while gabe is not very tough down low and gets pushed around a lot which is what Hayes will try to do. On a guy that likes to use brute force you need to be a smarter defender with quick hands for steals. That is in white's wheelhouse...not gabe's.

i also didn't say better post defender I said better POSITION defender. To help you out that means he keeps his body in a better position to defend. While gabe run around like a chicken with his head cut off looking for a block.

I'm gona assume Iowa has a better handle on how much Gabe weighs than Espn.

cheap fouls kept him out of the game. Madas strategy had nothing to do with it. They weren't going at him on the block.

Like I said your scouting report on Gabe is pretty outdated, he has not been getting pushed around on the block for a while now, out side of Texas game ,and is only slightly behind Woody as a defender IMO.

Aaron is not a good defender outside of playing passing lanes and is absolutely in no way better equipped to guard a low post banger.

Getting back to Woodbury, let's just say scoring average isn't the only way to measure ones value on a basketball court.

He does things that will never show up in the score book.

Another don't notice the train wreck that is Woodbury thread.

Woody has no offense around the basket. Can't get a contested rebound. Can't block. Wants to shoot those shots from the elbow. Heck, Woody can't do what some 6'8" players can do (any examples come to mind?) and that includes providing defense.

Did you listen to Jay Bilas during the Sparty game? i will take his comments on Woody over your comments. You are clueless.

The people that believes gabe is only slightly behind Woody as a defender prove their ignorance when they say that.

That may have been his best game at Iowa. Defense was outstanding, he made his layups, pulled down some big rebounds, was on the deck for loose balls, screening like a mad man, was barking out the defensive signals to teammates and got off the bench waving his arms for the crowd to bring the noise during a difficult stretch in the second half (which we did respond to him).

Great job young man.

Wow. You guys have condensed Woody down to a 7"1" defensive specialist...

First, one doesn't need to be 7'1" to be a defensive specialist in the middle so Woody's height is nullified, there. He shoots shots from the elbow (not so close to the basket) so he nullifies his height, there. He can't get contested rebounds...nullifies his height, there. Won't block shots.. nullifies height.
He plays like a Ralph-Sampson-type of player but has, IMO, half the athleticism of Ralph.

Iowa, as a team, needs defenders. Seems to me it's real easy for opponents to dribble around Iowa's defenses. That leads to a necessary defense at the rim after opponents' offenses has gotten around Iowa's perimeter defenses. Gabe provides that defense. Woody doesn't.

Here's an old thought that might shore up Iowa's defense: Play Gabe at the 5 to contest the rim and Woody at the 4 (at the same time) to do what Woody likes to do.

Height has to be addressed, again. Woody doesn't take advantage of his height. IMO, a shorter player would provide more athleticism than Woody, provide the defense you guys so love from Woody, might also provide some rim 'presence' that Iowa's defense so desperately needs, and would be an easier recruit than a 7 footer.

In your opinion. But you think Gabe still gets pushed around on the block and gets killed by pump fakes so I'm not sure how much weight that holds.

on the block, which is what were talking about, Gabe is almost as good. Switches and heges in space, Gabe is better, off the ball directing traffic Woodbury is still much better.

Sometimes he does his best work when he doesn't have the ball. That was the case last season as well. He can cause defenses/offensives to change it up, and he's an excellent passer for a big man. People like to look at stats but he does nice things that don't make it into the stat book.

Sure he frustrates me at times but I think he's getting better and will be really good as a senior.

People need to remember Les Jepsen and Bill Jones were pretty awful early on. Lepsen was on of the most uncoordinated players I've ever seen when he was a freshman and he ended up in the NBA.

Woody gets knocked a lot because he was a big recruit who North Carolina wanted. He'll be just fine at Iowa.

As a senior, Jespen gave you 15 and 12, somehow i do not think you are going to get that from Woody. Also, TD was really good at developing big men.

Sorry I lost you at the beginning of your incoherent rant after the first mention of "nullifies height"
