Pearl

I sure hope we did.

What "#" canidate do you guys think Fran was? I can't imagine him being in Barta's top 10. We had to of gone pretty far down this list

We heard plenty of rumors of who we had talked to, who had interviewed, etc. Except maybe for Hewitt at GT, weren't they all mid-major guys? Conference USA at most.

I'd bet money Barta never even sent any feelers out to the Pearl camp.

This is what worries me. To think that its possible Tenessee could lose to Mich St. today and we could have interviewed, or at least contacted both Pearl and Forbes but instead it seems like we were in a huge rush to hire another mid major coach. Im not saying that Fran wont be successful hear, (although I would be willing to wager against it) but if its true that we havent contacted Pearl because his team is still in the tourney (Same goes for the Dayton coach) why were we in such a rush to lock up Fran?

The only rumors with any credibility would be leaked by the coach's themselves. A quick "no thanks" from Pearl, Dixon, Drew would never leak because they wouldn't tell anybody or really even care. They get feelers from search firms all the time. Leaks occur when there are some semblance of substantive talks.

This whole thing reeks of trying to get off cheap, and not dish out the big bucks. I half-*** wonder if the Board of Regents got in Sally Mason's ear right after Barta said that money was not going to be an issue. The front page of the DSM Register ran a front page story on athletic spending at the state universities today. Coincedence?

no disrespect to the question honestly...but who cares? it is what it is and we will see how it turns out...its all about the players he can get...

I completely understand that Fran is our coach and i wish him the best. I dont think there's any harm in asking this question. If you dont care dont answer it.

I think its pretty obvious Pearl said no. He didnt want the job 3 years ago and he didnt want it this time either. I cant believe some people think Barta didnt even send out feelers.

I think you're probably right about Pearl not being interested, but what makes me question Barta is the fact that Brian Gregory seems to be a better fit for this program(and I know im no expert) and we couldnt even wait until Dayton was done with the NIT before we hired the coach from Siena???

As far as Pearl not being interested, I have to believe it goes to the fundamental core of salesmanship and dedication that Barta is displaying for our Men's BB program. Did Barta informally send a:

"Excuse me Mr. Pearl, would you pretty please consider the Iowa job? We could offer a reasonable market-rate contract that is equitable to your current performance."

Versus waiting until UT lost, like they just did, and saying:

"Coach Pearl. The University of Iowa has suffered a demoralizing stretch in its history and I mean to correct that situation now. You are Hawkeye at heart, you've said so yourself, and I will guarantee that it is worth your while to be our coach. I am ready to make Basketball a priority in Iowa City and your contract will make you forget any incoming recruits you're leaving behind."

Barta instead throws crumbs on the ground to see what bottom-feeding worm will drudge out of the slop to get 'em.

We need to get past the Pearl thing. He wasn't going to come to Iowa anyway. We should move on, like Pearl has. I support the new coach 100%.

Its also possible Gregory wasnt interested. He mightve already "agreed" to take over the Dupaul or Seton Hall job when his season is over

I know a lot of people dont like Barta but we need to assume that he has checked with all these people. There is no time pressure to hire a coach so if Gregory wanted the job and Barta wanted him Barta would wait and hire him.

I hope you're right. Guess im done venting, felt good to get it out of my system. Lets go Fran!

I think Bruce pretty well spelled it out more than once.

Please, PLEASE, change your screen name. Perhaps something like "FransTheMan" or a variation on that theme.
Either way, get the lick out of here.:(
