Kids calling home for more lunch money is a regular occurrence for quite a few students. I am assuming athletes on scholarship can still apply for FAFSA, right?

But I don't think that is the main issue. It is the university and ncaa making money from an athlete's likeness and abilities. As far as abilities go, I think a free education is one hell of a trade. Usage of the athlete's likeness and name may be another story.

What about walk-ons who have no scholarship? They are the ones to be paid something, in my opinion.

The biggest problems will occur when agents get involved. The NCAA's oversight will get worse before it gets better.

I've always thought some cash stipend in addition to what they already receive makes sense. (theory being that the time demands of the sport preclude any kind of part time job for "spending money". Maybe $1-2,000 semester. There would have to be some conference or NCAA pool for distribution. That kind of money is nothing to a B1G school, but an extra $200K/semester to a Georgia Southern or UMass program is significant. So now we're back to...should we have 5 Power conferences and then another tier?

That said, giving athletes a cash benefit will do nothing to stem the dirty money. Those are much bigger amounts passed under the table at places like Alabama (hypothetically speaking...of course)

And you don’t know that. You are simply talking in generalities and making excuses for iowa and ferentz for being so bleh all these years. I have news for you. There are improprieties everywhere...including iowa. If you don’t believe that then you are in fantasy land. And the thought it’s all criminal in the south is also incorrect. Iowa has major advantages over a significant number of schools including southern schools. If this staff isn’t taking advantage then that’s on them

OK, got it. You call out someone else for talking in generalities, the go straight into your usual Iowa/Ferentz bashing. You say Iowa has major advantages over a significant number of schools including southern schools. Name them or YOU are talking in generalities.

Hayden once said that the states small population base was the biggest potential negative to him making his decision on accepting the job. Throw in cold weather, in state competition, and you are looking at three major disadvantages right there. But continue on with you usual, unabated Iowa bashing.

Oh, poor little Iowa. :(

All this does is open up another can of worms for schools to find a way to cheat. More policing. I agree a free education and putting that one was a student athlete on their resume is huge. Ex players get great career opportunities after the game.

If it happens might as well NOT call collegiate sports amateur sports anymore.

I've wondered about a nominal stipend as well, but, this opens a can of worms to. This because ya can't just limit the stipends to players in football, basketball, or women's basketball (the major revenue sports). You're gunna get the crew teams, softball teams, field hockey players and any scholarship student raising hell until they get their $$$$.

I don't even understand half the shit I read from him. That guy takes detours in his posts and arguments like no other.
It’s hard for him not to mention Iowa State. He has to rabbit trail himself to not say, “Cyclones”

The big problems:
1) Title IX (that's all that needs be said, no explanation necessary!)
2) Equity across sports. As an example, what car dealership will bring the women's softball team's catcher down on any Saturday for autographs? But, conversely, is it fair that the starting QB has to share his NIL notoriety with the women's volleyball back-up setter, anyway? But, again, this is already an issue. When the Iowa Women's B-ball team does a West Coast swing with a tournament, etc., flies out, stays in nice hotels, etc., you can bet that doesn't happen if the Men's Football and Basketball teams hog all their money for themselves...
3) Policing: except...one easy solution. No hiring of agents, but simply have the players get a 1099, which gets reported to the IRS. The NCAA may drop the ball a ton on investigating stuff. The IRS, not so much. Still, players can't coordinate all this stuff themselves. But an agent? No, thanks. But some schools aren't a hell of a lot more trustworthy than your average agent. So, how/who/when/where coordinating appearances, autograph signings, etc?

In short, there ae a LOT of things to be ironed out. But, the current system no longer works.
