Patrick McCaffrey

I am all for Fran's two sons coming to Iowa on full scholarships, but in the end, I want them to do what is best for them.

That said, if they ever want to have Christmas at their parents' house again, if they ever want their parents at their weddings down the road, if they ever want to celebrate another birthday with their folks, they had better go to Iowa.

Barta had this trick up his sleeve the whole time boys. Brilliant! Find a coach with a 2-3 sons whose parents were both star bball players and good size and bank on them being great players and wanting to play for dad to turn the program around! Make sure to email Gary and tell him thanks for this forward thinking! ;)

Pat was shooting around prior to Iowa vs Nebraska when I was down in Lincoln to catch that game. We were there an hour early cause we had to find tickets, so we got to watch him quite a bit. Mind you that I am not someone who's really good at breaking down talent or anything, but I was amazed at how fluent he looked handing the ball for a kid his age. He never missed and was shooting it all over the court and really showed an ability to get to the rim when he was going up for layups. Something that just looks wrong when you know he's in junior high.

If Fran leaves I think it'll be cause Iowa doesn't live up to expectations. I don't think he's looking for greener grass so much. He's going to have 2 boys in HS and seems pretty entrenched here now. Maybe I'm being naive but I don't see him going to ND if that job came open but it's so tough to look ahead 2 plus years. So who really knows.

Yeah, he's 55. I'm not sure Fran has another stop in him.

I only played against 1 kid in 8th grade that was a man amongst boys pretty much. He was like 6'2 and put together pretty good. He couldn't dunk but he was really athletic and coordinated. For a 5'7 skinny kid at the time as I was he may as well been Shaq.

It's called the Ferentz plan. Gary just had to follow Bowlsby's lead on this.

I worry that McCaffery will not be here the time Patrick is ready to play but I can hope. One good thing is that IC West is the shitick in HS b-ball right now and the city is a nice place to live. That may keep them here. A team full of AAU players. But, there is a chance McCaffery build Iowa over the next few years and could get offers. We'll see.

Played against Hoiberg in 8th grade....kid was dunking in games then. Best high school athlete I ever saw and played against....

Or it could go the other way. I hope not, but it could. In 5 years we've seen steady improvement, but we've just gone from really bad to just okay. Hopefully the program keeps trending upwards AND we can keep a good coach.

This. Fran worked his whole coaching career to get a big time job, he has one now. He's spent five years rebuilding the program back to where Iowa was under Davis and I don't see him leaving now that that is done. I think this is where he wants to stay.

If back to back appearances to the NCAA tournament is "just okay," then what is good or great?

In general, reaching the NCAA tournament is a "good" thing. "Just okay" is more like the NIT. But the best way to judge it is by talent and preseason expectations. To this point, I would say Iowa is having a "good" year. Sweet 16 or better is "great."

At one point Connor was on the ESPN Top 25 players list for the 2017 class (#24 I believe). Now he's not on the list and ESPN doesn't even show him committed to Iowa on his profile.

ESPN isn't the most reliable source when it comes to basketball recruiting. He's currently a top 100 recruit according to 247 and their composite rankings.

In all honesty though, the rankings don't mean a whole lot at least until after their sophomore summers of aau ball. Kids are still developing quite a bit physically at Connor's age.

I completely agree, it did make me wonder what might have happened for him to go from #24 to off the board.

He committed to play for his Dad at Iowa. That means his ranking probably won't do anything but stay the same or go down. I'm doing my best not to pay attention to it because it's meaningless in the grand scheme of things. It's frustrating, but it's just the way it is.

Getting to play with a top 25 point guard could be a deciding factor for other really good recuuts that are on the fence.

The recruiting sites can't drum up reader interest for a coaches son who's already committed his freshman year in high school.
