P. Harty Article - Quotes from Settles and Murray

I'm guessing that Murray's comments were the ones that Jon foreshadowed as in "the media shoe will drop."

If so, not sure that it will have that big of an impact, just a reaffirmation for what a lot of folks have been saying.

I have said from day one..as has Kenyon, and Bobby Hansen. Until Iowa gets a difference maker we will struggle. We are nothing more then a collection of role players...nothing more.

Why the heck does everyone want to compare Iowa with Wisconsin. Wisconsin runs the style they run because they couldn't win any other way. Iowa has proven that a "system" is not needed at Iowa. Iowa has proven that with an exciting style and the right coach in place that the better athlete's will come to Iowa. Wisconsin has never proven they could win in the style that Iowa use to run under Davis.

After reading what Barta wrote I have very little hope. I still tape every game but have only watched a couple all the way through. It is brutal to watch.

Actually, I think you mean what Barta "said" and Harty quoted. But I agree with your assessment.

Barta reminds me of the getting-larger-by-the-day puppy you brought home a while ago that despite all your training and teaching them to go outside still pees on your beautiful Persian rug. At some point a rolled up newspaper to the hind end does wonders.

Barta doesn't get that horrid basketball is not the Iowa way.

Clearly an unhappy fan base, mounting losses at the box office and the concession booth, being disrespected by national sports columnists and mocked by opposing fans and players, is not enough for Barta. What more will it take for him to "get it"?

His job needs to be in the mix as well, IMHO. Sally Mason, where are you?

Rev Holzhanner - I certainly realize that there was plenty of criticism of both Tom Davis and Kenyon Murray (who was a fine college player but did not live up to expectations of many Iowa fans for him going in).

My point was simply that anyone who dares criticize Todd Lickliter is labeled a "hater" by most posters who think Coach Lickliter is doing a great job, and since Kenyon Murray had comments critical of the Iowa program, there have been a number of posts ripping Kenyon (and his lack of basketball knowledge).

Style = system.

Tom Davis could have won at Wisconsin. The Wisconsin coach could win at Iowa. Any style/system can win. The coach has to get the right athletes, the right players, and the right role players into his style/system to be successful.

In year three of Lickliter's career the grade is "F". A 20+ loss season, a feat never done in Iowa bb history, can be nothing but an "F".

i'm definitely pro-lickliter but there isn't anything that kenyon says that i can disagree with. it is a tougher sell to get mcdonald's all-americans and guys who are used to aau ball to play a more deliberate style. i'm encouraged, however, to note that brust and larson are apparently down with the system enough to sign up for four years' worth. those two can play.

no knock on kenyon, but his own story is a great example of how much more it matters what you do when you get to college than what you do in high school. he was a solid player for us, but when he came in as a high school all-american i expected a 'change the game' type player. he was not that. i'd rather get guys who come as quality players and become "change the game" types over the years, and i think we have a couple of those... just because van coleman didn't like how they looked when they were 15 doesn't mean a guy can't be a great college player.

I think the point he is trying to make is, these kids are allowed to, even encouraged, to run and gun because they are far superior to their competition at every level, til college. They have their way with most guys on the BB court.
Why would they choose to leave that all behind and play for a coach that doesnt allow that, When 90% of the rest of CBB head coaches do?
These top players have options. They can choose between 15 to 20 programs, at least.

“Whatever coach said the good thing about freshmen is they’re going to become sophomores…the good thing about sophomores is they’re going to become juniors and the good thing about our freshmen is they’re going to become sophomores and combine that with others are saying is a tremendous recruiting class,â€￾ Barta said. “There certainly is a bright light coming at the end of that tunnel.â€￾

Did coach tell you they would become sophmores and juniors at other schools? They dont stick around long enough for TL to see them become SOs and JRs!
Barta is absolutely clueless. He needs to be fired first. Not a doubt in my mind.

I am beginning to think this is the start of the solution. We have a basketball coach AND an AD who are in over their heads. Sally Mason, come out, come out, wherever you are.

I too believe Kenyon raises some valid points and yes he didn't live up to "our" expectations of a McDonald's all american, but he was a "game changer" on the defensive end. Last time I checked, he was in the top 20 in scoring, steals, blocks and rebounding for his career. To his point, I don't feel he is trying to criticize, but help point out what some of us have thoughtfor a while now. He is highly complimentary of the team on B10 Network and has said these same things on TV.

Exactly what I was going to say. 7 scholarship players left early...and not to the NBA. I can not believe Barta actually brought that up. Barta must be fired first.

And he was banging one of the hottest cheerleaders that I have ever personally seen - pretty sure she was the sister of one of our tennis players or maybe she wasn't a cheerleader, just the sister...either way she was smoking hot. Kudos to Murray.

The difference between a Pitt/WV game and and Iowa game is that, yes, it was a game in the 60's because they had similar athletes for one. Their teams will also adapt to different styles. Their teams will run when given a chance, will press when needed, will switch up offenses and defenses as games progress. But you are correct the game was a half-court game like Iowa played.

The difference was that Iowa intentionally plays keepaway bb to keep the ball away from a more talented team because Lickliter KNOWS he does not have the athetes to compete man on man, just like when he was at Butler. THAT was the only way Butler can compete with more athletic teams.

When a team like Butler gets to the tournament they can do well because it is keepaway bb, slowdown bb, whatever you want to call it. Other teams are not familar with the style and Butler can sneak up of a team or two. When Butler plays a lot of top teams out of conference, yes, they will win a game or two but most often they finish .500 or below. They then go into their conference and beat up on nobody teams.

In the Big 10, coaches will quickly figure out lickliter's system. Without star players, Lickliter is not going to sneak up on anyone and the result will be quite similar to Butler playing out of conference teams. Even with veteran players, Lickliter will beat a few upper division teams but without the star players, when it comes to crunch time he will get beat at least 50 percent of the time or more because the talent is not as good.

So UNLESS he can recruit star players, average role players playing keepaway bb, slowdown, basterdized bb is not going to win Big 10 championships or even get Iowa near the top three in the conference. It will however get Iowa near 6th-7th, maybe 5th and potentially a bubble bid to the NCAA and that is WITH veteran players.

But compared to where Iowa presently is, Barta would pound his chest and howl like a werewolf at night in triumpth and would probably give Lickliter another 4 year extension. He would be so happy he would pee his pants at press conferences. Of course most of the fan base won't be very happy considering this is the BEST that lickliter can ever hope for but many Iowa fans don't have many expectations these days.
