Overwhelmed with Frustration

I get the OP's point. I think he was just immature and not able to express himself without getting butt hurt when someone disagreed.

A poster in another thread put it very well when he said he felt the Iowa fb program is like a bear going into hibernation. Seems like the whole program is stretching, yawning, and getting ready for a long winters nap. Like the coaches are content with 7-5, when the rest of us are not.

I understand why the op is frustrated. I get it and I wish there was some changes being made. I'm not sure why he got banned though... I've read much worse things on this board almost on a daily basis. I get that he could have voiced his opinion a little differently (and there is no reason to be THAT upset/frustrated about a game) but... it is what it is I guess.

Attacking other posters like that has never been something that flies with me. I just happened to be reading that post...I dont read them all and I dont doubt there are other threads where there have been similar things posted. I just can't possibly read them all as there are usually more than 1000 new posts here each day

3 years 7 or fewer wins, 3 years 8 or more wins. Fans will complain for a couple of years and then hop back on the bandwagon for the good three year run.

I really think you are wrong about this and there isn't enough of a sample size to say otherwise.

I am not trying to infer in any of this that people can't or shouldn't be irritated or bothered. The number of coaches that have brought their program back after a 2005-2007 dip are not many. KF is one of a few I can think of off the top of my head. The number to have done it more than once, even fewer.

In the end, this team probably won as many games as it 'deserved' to win. The win against Pitt was miraculous, in that something like that had never happened before in Iowa history. the loss at Iowa State was deserved, as the Clones outplayed Iowa in nearly every phase and had they not had two redzone turnovers, the game wouldn't have been that close. Iowa earned the rest of their wins, and deserved defeat at Minnesota when the offense misfired so many times in the first half.

7-5 seems about right, and given their schedule this year, you almost feel like 8 wins would have been a 6-6 year. I think 7 wins with this schedule was the least this team could do, which is what it did.

Last year's underperforming result is a big part of this year's angst IMO...but it doesn't matter. That's one year of a huge underperformance (historically so) and this year's team did the bare minimum as far as wins given the softer schedule and the status the program has attained as one of the Top 20 in the nation, with facilities that are only getting better and on par with the best in the game.

Another thing gnawing at folks is that next year doesn't offer immediate signs that things will be much better.

So we have a long offseason ahead of us...but when it gets to the point where it is overwhelming someone with frustration, that's a bit much

JD - the above is exactly why I said after the Penn State game that KF needed to move on. He has his reputation in tact to say the least and to risk it (which he would if he were fired) to bring a program back from the brink twice on his watch is risky at best for his legacy.

The players that left their respective leagues at the top of their games were head scratchers, but no one remembers Barry Sanders being slow and ******. Somehow no one remembers MJ playing for Washington.

I guess I don't see what's all that wrong with the OP, I've read a lot more volatile posts than this. Perhaps his overloaded frustration is based precisely on the fact that he can't do anything about it, except sound off on an anonymous message board. Better than kicking the dog. (Plus, me thinks he was engaging in some standard post-game fan hyperbole). As far as calling others idiots, probably over the line and he gets what he deserves in not following the etiquette laid out by Jon, but I'm sure he meant it in a loving way. :)

That's understandable.

The once in a while BCS game is just not enough. I personnally think we should be seeing a lot more consistancy as far as the success on the field by now. Something has either gone horribly wrong or we maybe seeing the end of the Ferentz coaching era and the staff is just not working as hard as they did early on because they are close to the end. The flip side of this is everyone is getting so used to the buddy system with Ferentz, they know their job isnt in jeapordy and thus they are on cruze control.

Either way, we just dont have much to look forward to now. If you go with the thinking that this is one of the big tens youngest teams and we will get better thru the next few years, we thought the same thing up to last year and what did that get us? I total flop!

Plenty of people were overwhelmed and frustrated after the 05-07 stretch. Then in 08 the Hawkeyes produced a Doak Walker Award winning, record breaking running back that should've been considered for the Heisman. They lost only four games by a combined 12 points, beat a top 5 team, and one could argue that team should've been undefeated. Then in 09 they won 11 games, including a BCS bowl in which their opponent was favored.

Obviously this coaching staff CAN create a very good program, just not every single year. It comes in cycles. I'm okay with it, as long as the peaks still come.

Good points.

I think the OP stated that "Wisconsin has passed us" but they were probably going to a decent team this year, since they had to break in a new QB. Then Russell Wilson came along, and Bam!

We had Shonn Greene.

Iowa will be back. The talent definitely dropped but it will improve.

Must have missed all the ones that call out posters for just disagreeing with being happy about 7-5.

Surprised that warranted a ban, but I don't really care...not even sure why I wasted time posting on it...just seemed like an odd move.

As for the disappointment from underachieving. It isn't just this year...and its not just because this is adding onto last year. Both these teams should have had better records than 8-5 and 7-5. The talent was there last year, the schedule was there this year.

However, go back to 2008...which most people seem satisfied with the 9-4 season...there was only one team we played that year that was better than us...PSU. We beat them, but lost to 4 teams who were not as good as we were. Go back and watch those games and honestly tell me in each of those 4 losses we were outplayed, rather than the losses occurring because of costly mistakes by coaches. such as situational playcalling. Also remember, we almost blew the Purdue game right after the PSU win, where Greene went off yet again..with some ridiculous Heisman worthy runs...thankfully we held on or it would have been another 7-5 season.

I feel like I'm listening to Soundoff!;)

I couldn't agree more with you though, Jon. After last year, many fans are still bitter and are taking it out on this year's performance which is about what we should have accepted, maybe a win more, but still. Now it is a little bit worse due to the fact that we could've EASILY won 9 games this year, but it didn't happen, we didn't get the bounce or execute to win a game in which we didn't deserve to.

I find it funny how many times I read a post and someone infers a ban is coming. Whatever happened to being able to say what you want? I know there is a line but when someone says something like "Im Overwhelmed with Frustration" then calls people who don't agree idiots, is that really calling for a ban? In general calling "people" idiots is basic day to day life. We all have our opinions and oddly enough all Hawk fans want the same thing. Some think a conservative coaching staff who plays the same way every week is the way to go, while others think prepping for the team you are playing and thinking out side the box is the way to go. I honestly am sick of KF and staff do I know if someone else would be better? Yeah I do know someone else would be better but I don't know who specifically. Im not calling for KFs job by any means I think he could make some changes and the team would be better off. My real problem is paying him so much money for this. When it costs money to watch these games and it does, no matter how you spin it you have a right to be upset with what you pay for. Just telling someone to stop paying to watch is dumb because fans are the heart and soul of thier team. We take losses harder and we make more out of the wins. We all would give up something very near and dear to us to have played just one game wearing that black and gold so the bad hurts and the good feels great. Banning someone from an opinion is basically saying "shut up idiot" the complete opposite of what a message board should be saying. I have no problem ignoring a post I dont agree with, and I would never call someone a name based on if I agree with them or not, but we all have a level of passion committed to and invested in this program and emotions are spilled by everyone alive. We all want the same thing 13-0 and a national title year after year....sure thats not realistic but heck we dont even sniff the Rose Bowl with KF and company and thats what really sucks to me. Yes 2 BCS games is nice, but consistency means a lot in college football, and Im really sick to my stomach at how little time we have spent even ranked during the seasons anymore. This program should have more, but we could also have less a lot less. Fans wont always agree on whats wrong but I think most agree having an opinion and being able to speak it shouldn't be in question.

Sorry for the long post, its just one of those days. Being a Hawk fan who lived in Nebraska losing to them just plain stinks...then not even being a factor makes it even harder.

The OP needs something else in his life, I think...a hobby...a girlfriend...a puppy...take a community college course and find a more fulfilling career...dunno, but find somethin' fella.

Don't be too hard on yourself, Jon. Message boards are getting out of hand with the name calling and outrageous claims. We are all frustrated with the loss, but for people to claim the coaches don't care anymore ... unless someone has seen them out partying after a loss ... which I find hard to believe ... then maybe we should all take a chill pill.

Living in Nebraska, this last loss really hurt. But I know I am just a fan. I know this loss hurt the team and coaches much more. Call me a fool, call me a Kool Aid drinker, but I still believe Coach Ferentz will make some changes. Maybe not all the ones I would like ... but then again ... I am just a fan.

Being a fan of of a sports team is a diversion from life, mostly enjoyable...and can be equated with a hobby.

Covering the Hawks is what I do for a living. Being a fan is one of the things I do for fun. I just get to combine both worlds.

'Business' is always better when the teams are doing better, consistently. But when they aren't, I certainly am not going to let it define me to a point where I get 'Overwhelmed' or 'Overloaded' with frustration because I cannot control the outcome of sporting events. When things near that point, I unplug for a day or so. It's good therapy ;)

I know a couple thousand people that would/could benefit from this suggestion. There's enough things to worry over in life that are far more important then the Hawkeyes. Hard to say sometimes, as the Hawks are a form of therapy as well...... Regardless, it's not worth fighting over when the results accomplish nothing at all.
