PG - Gessel

SF - May
PF - White
C - Woodbury

At least it is as of right now, courtesy of the Black and Gold blowout. May and Marble might be somewhat interchanging there at the 2 and 3.

How did you come to that conclusion? Based on what I saw on the court Olaseni should be starting over Woodbury.

I agree on Duffman's Day 1 lineup, but I wouldn't bet the house on it. I will trust Fran's judgement.

I told my (much more knowledgeable) neighbor at the blowout that Woodbury would start day 1. That was before the scrimmage. It is certainly a complex decision including who has the greater upside, who needs more playing time now to be ready for BiG. Of all the lineups, I doubt that we will see Olaseni and Woodbury together as twin towers, but wouldn't that be fun?

Woodbury needs a lot of work, I know it was just a scrimmage but Olaseni dominated him on both ends of the court.

I would have no problem with May starting. He is the absolute 100% leader of this team. From everything I have heard(not exactly from "inside", but he does usually have accurate info), he has become the heart of this team. The person I talked to mentioned "Tebow-eque" as far a leadership skills. Take that FWIW(if anything), but it did make me realize that I probably wouldn't have been able to predict him developing into the kind of leader 2 years ago. Eric can surprise...so I would keep that in mind heading into the season.

Not to mention, he is one of the best athletes on the team(behind Gabe). He also isn't a bad defender. Even though his offense is suspect, he's a decent defender. It wouldn't be a bad idea to let him start and apply the good defense and harrass an opponents 3. Put some good pressure on him, and if May gets a couple of fouls...it's not the end of the world. But at least the defensive tone is set for the game. Regardless of whether he starts or not, I foresee him getting about the same amount of minutes a game. Roughly in the 10-12 mark.

One other thing...I did mention last season how one of my former college coaches was able to watch Ingram consistently the last few years and had predicted that Iowa fans would be talking him up more than any other frosh by mid season of this year. While I was skeptical of that comment when he said it(and still am),I do see why he made the statement. I see a lot of raw ability in that kid. I know a lot of people figured he would be a good candidate for a shirt this season. I will be surprised if that happens.

Who told you that?

This year, starting is going to be meaningless, really. Fran can go with matchups vs a set unit, and so it could change game to game. Who is in at the end of games? That is what will tell us who the best players are.

Fran said that May could start, but he might want his leadership off the bench, along with his scoring and defense. Our second unit has to win their minutes, and that means having some scorers out there. Our first unit will not match most of the top 7 in the league, but our second unit could win us some games.

I disagree. For instance, late in games, you probably want McCabe on the court, because he is the only big guy who can shoot free throws.

In fact, we don't really return any above average FT shooters. Can Gessel hit his throws? Woodbury?

Not sure about Gesell but Woodbury is not to good. If we have a lead at the end of the game Woodbury probably wont be in.

Gabe's not a good shooter either, nor Basabe. McCabe could play 5, but he can't defend, so he's not a great late-in-game choice either.

Fran may need to sub in offense-defense at each dead ball in close games.

I think McCabe's defense is better than Woodbury's free throw shooting but you're probably right on the subbing.

If memory serves Basabe shot nearly 70% from the line last year. Thats hardly a liability at the end of games.

It's only a scrimmage, I know, but the players who impressed me most were:
#1 Pat Ingram
#2 Gabe Olesani
#3 Eric May
#4 Mike Gesell
#5 Jaime Printy (she destroyed Oglesby in a 3pt shooting contest)
