The headlines and backlash from this game will only get uglier

Don Bosco 102, Tri-County 6

Man...WTF

Geez louise. I felt guilty beating the CPU by less than that on the Xbox! Don't they still have the mercy rule?? I seem to recall going to a continuous clock if one team got up by 35, and then calling it if it went to 50 (though I seem to recall the opposing coach having the option to keep playing)

I believe that in Iowa, the mercy rule is a running clock any time a team leads by more than 35 in the 2nd half. They play normal rules for the first half, and there is not 50-point rule anymore.

Who is the genius who changed that rule? Seriously, I'm all for being positive that you can make a comeback but if you're down 50...just go home.

Here's an article from 2003, when the rule change was made, that explains some the logic. It includes this:

"Legg says changing the rule will ensure games don’t end abruptly at the half. He says the rule doesn’t prevent halftime ceremonies, as before people would leave if the game was over and the band didn’t get to play, and you didn’t have homecoming ceremonies. He says it will also allow coaches to play more kids."

FWIW, here are some score of other games Tri-County has played this year. It looks to me like this is more of a Tri-County issue tha a Don Bosco issue.

Additionally, here's the rest of Don Bosco's schedule. Looking at the scores that TC and DB have put up this year, it seems like 102-6 was i[FONT=minion-pro, Georgia, serif]nevitable.

So a team is getting it's *** handed to it to the tune of a 50 point or more deficit and you want to continue the bloodbath so the ******* band can play at halftime???

Whoever "Legg" is...needs to be fired. I know this probably doesn't justify execution, but someone should also give him a good swift punch in the mouth.

Just double-checked the rules, and because this was an 8-man game, there was actually a running clock after the end of the 1st quarter.

Lastly, I just looked at BCMoore's computer rankings, and they actually list Don Bosco as a 112-point favorite using the standard scoring model that includes blowouts (See "Comp" category"). I guess the big question should really be, "why was this game ever allowed to be played?"

Meh, I'd still take their O-coordinator over Greg Davis.

My junior year in high school (76) our #1 Hampton girls basketball team beat a first-year team, Eagle Grove, 106-7. That's right, 106-7. Trouble is the scoreboard only went to 99, so it looked as if we lost 07-06.

I never knew computer rankings existed for Iowa HS FB, let alone 8-man. Thanks Jumper. Anybody know any bookies taking bets on the 8-man game.

If they'd stop DB's games after 50 pts., the kids would only get to play about 25% of their season. Is that fair? Many would lose their last chance at organized football. Maybe these teams need to concentrate on D or a better D scheme. DB prob should go back up to 11 man A, in actuality.
