OT: Distraction

Was going to go to Darlington for the Southern 500 with my dad and few buddies, but that's off the table. No plans as of yet. Labor Day doesn't really feel like the end of summer in the South because you're still drawing 90 degree days deep into September and even the first week of October. Start of fall is more like Halloween because it's usually still in the mid to high 70's by then. Definitely will watch the Tide and Dawgs if the SEC can play that weekend. My buddy's wife is supposed to be induced on September 3 and will bring the baby home that weekend, so my guess is no matter what, their 2 and 4 year olds will be over at my house for a big chunk of the weekend so we can give mama some time to recover.

You probably know there are lots of 90 degree days at beginning of Sept and for a couple weeks in Iowa. plenty of hot games at kinnick. and it still is summer

Yeah, like the first game at Kinnick is hot as balls, the second is pleasant in shorts, the third is sweatshirts, the fourth is layered sweatshirts, maybe winter coat and after that there is a high chance of "cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey" level of temperatures.

Where I’m at in Iowa the NWS has forecasted 93° for Monday, and 95° for Tuesday and Wednesday with dew points in the 70s. Nasty.

That will push your heat index to about 105°. 110° if your dew points get really crazy, like in the 76, 77 range.

Our local dew point reached 77 or 78 on Sunday the ninth and was probably in that territory early the next afternoon before the heavens opened up. That's muggy!

Ahh, good ol' Iowa. Where the miracles of the jet stream bring you summer weather as bad as Shreveport and winter weather as bad as Fargo.

We only hit 95 a total of 5 days in July, none in May, June or August. Not even above 90 in the 10 day forecast here. Isn't this around the time the State Fair should be going on? Gotta assume Mother Nature is gonna F the state over just as a reminder.

Mother Nature just did. If you live south of US 20 and north of I 80 there's a good chance you lost either your corn or your bin to store it in.

We dropped to 51° this morning where I live so it won't be long before autumn is knocking on the door.

Yep. There aren’t too many places on earth where you can experience -30° true air temp with -60° windchill, and 4 months later see 102° with a 80° dew point. It’s actually quite insane if you think about it.

Sitting around being depressed... I'll try to not watch NBA playoffs. But probably still will watch some. Play with my dog. That's about it. Pretty exciting stuff.

People down here don't believe me when I say the bad days in summer in Iowa are worse than the bad days in summer here. These fat southerners would fucking melt if they had to do actual farmwork in Iowa in July or August.

I disagree, the 2nd or 3rd is usually torrential downpours and everyone is in raincoats or garbage bags.

Yeah, but the temp is still pleasant in shorts. That second or third Saturday in September is when every drop of moisture leaves the lower atmosphere over Iowa until the following May. If you have dry skin, it's cracked as shit by the fourth week of September because over the course of 72 hours the ground level humidity goes from "Baton Rouge" to "Phoenix." Man, I totally forgot about that phenomenon until you reminded me of it and you are right that there have been several occasions where it has hit during the second or third game.

I think we had an ISU game that was in or right after a monsoon at some point about 10 years ago and I still have a lingering injury to my foot from when I fell off the fucking bleachers at the Tennessee Tech game in that monsoon where they had to stop the game. That storm crushed the whole Midwest - I think Notre Dame was delayed and Michigan had to call their game due to recurring lightning.

Hell going into the weekend it's not even close to that bad down here. It's gonna be in the low mid 80s and getting down into upper 50s at night just how I like it. It's always humid but this will be an awesome break from the mid 90s we've gotten every damn day. We don't get the wind Iowa gets. Seems like Iowa has a breeze most days to some extent. The wind only blows down here if it's storming. One of the first things I noticed about moving down here.

The Horse latitudes. 30° latitude got its name when prevailing sea breezes died and ancient mariners had to throw their horses overboard to decrease the ship's weight.

Many of the world's deserts are located near the 30th parallel, both north and south of the equator. The prevailing winds, stirred by coriolis effect, sink in the horse latitudes, and favor a lack of precipitation

The day Mikail McCall went from phenom to doghouse to infirmary, all in about one hour.

Spectacular runs, followed by two lost fumbles, followed by a broken ankle.

AIRBHG may not have started that day but certainly gained momentum.

Its the evapotranspiration effect that sets the midwest apart. It can shoot a local dewpoint by an extra ten degrees and you just don't get dewpoints that high even in Florida.

Fortunately they peak around the supper hour, then usually drop back into the lower 70's range. Which is still humid enough.

Anyone got any new or otherwise cool plans for Labor Day? I took Friday off to get those two details done so we're back on the train.

Been putting in a 400 square ft paver patio slowly over the last month, hoping to finish it this weekend. Lot of drinking I'm sure. Removed about 10,000 lbs of concrete, dug out 9 inches everywhere, packed and leveled 10 tons of gravel so far!

You don't appreciate how fucking heavy gravel is until you have to buy it by the ton for a project that you are funding yourself.
