I think the main thing is it’s going to get used as a non-plausible excuse for the offense (if it continues to be bad). Vander Zee is out and who knows what level he’ll be at when he comes back, Moulton, now Ostrenga, and all of us here know there will be a couple more minimum like there is every year.
I’m not a Kirk hater by any definition, but with the B1G and CFP setup the way it is now we don’t have a snowballs chance in hell of any kind of conference or postseason aspirations…this year is as good a situation as it will get to make a change. We’re not a 2-10 team, and we’re not a blue blood that can get ruined by a new HC hire.
My vote is give the keys to either Lester, Woods, or Fat Pitzgerald. All 3 know the program and know Big Ten level football ball very well. If we have a bunch of injuries that somehow mask the downfalls of Kirk’s football philosophy that no longer works in 2025, I can see it being a whole lot easier for him to think it’s worth another shot. In my meaningless opinion it’s no longer worth a shot at this style of play.
And I know there are a lot of folks here who love Kirk and want to see him ride it all the way out, but every single great coach hits the end of the road of success (however it’s measured) at some point. No one is immune to it. Just like how freaks like Usain Bolt can’t run a sub 10 100 meters forever all the way to shmucks like me won’t be able to run an unimpressive 25 minute 5k forever. You just have to recognize it when it happens and accept it.
