Opening Brings Michigan, Oliver Martin Together

Yeah and that's our worst nightmare.... Relationships with those other kids is what could tug him away. Hopefully the thought of him staying and being a "Tim Dwight" type of home town hero on top of all the other pluses to being a Hawk will be enough to keep him.

Makes you wonder where the relationships are with current players and recruits in Iowa City. You'd think some of these guys would be pretty close to the entire team of Iowa City West. Maybe not.

Roh rohh......I think he is gone. Having kids growing up in IC, staying home is not the draw that most people think. My son was offered by Iowa in another sport, he grew up a Hawkeye, both parents alums, he loved Iowa football and IC, but the draw to going to some place different was strong. Those assuming that just because he lives here, he'll stay here, are making a mistake.

FWIW 3 guys on 247 sports have "crystal balled" Martin to Michigan in the last 24 hours.

Well considering Michigan is just now falling for him that's not surprising. When Michigan offers it's a safe bet to make that your crystal ball prediction. It's kind of like rolling a 7 at the craps table. Harbaugh often gets what Harbaugh wants. Let's just hope that isn't the case this time.

Iowa and KFz have a lot to offer a recruit. But when it's a "playmaker" type, he's pretty easy to recruit against. Risk management doesn't excite a lot of kids.

The kid hasn't really spoken with media lately right? So it's hard telling where his head is. I honestly don't know if Iowa is the leader in the clubhouse or not. And I guess we'll never know if Iowa had offered early and say he even committed early if all this new found rise in his stock would have kept him a Hawk either. When there isn't much being said there's just little to go on.

Martin seems to be keeping his recruitment close to the vest, so all these predictions are a joke. I have no inside info, but think Iowa will be in the mix when it's all said and done. His recruitment has been crazy the past month. Would love to see him in a Hawkeye uniform.

I agree. He's answering all questions the same way. Obviously these sports analysts covering specific programs are going to spin it in their favor if they can, but I don't feel like he's said a single thing that really tells you who his favorite is right now. Basically it's this:

1. Iowa is home.
2. He's close with Rocky Lombardi so MSU is interesting to him.
3. He bonded with Michigan players at The Opening.

It just depends what the kid wants.

If he decides he wants the experience of leaving Iowa City, where he's lived his whole life, I certainly can't blame him. The experience of a new city was one of the things I enjoyed most about going to college. Do you think that changes just because they are going to play football? I would imagine football players at other schools have fun, too.

He can enjoy a new city 5 years from now when he's in the NFL. For now he has work to do being the hometown hero :)

Martin going somewhere else might turn Kirk's recruiting class home run into a triple I'm afraid.

Not at all. Lets say we flip Buckley, I'd prefer him over Martin anyway. Hippenhammer is still visiting and he has offers from Penn St., Ill., Indiana, MSU and more.

We are still in on Russ Yeast, who many programs have offered as a WR, and if we go him and say Boyce, we could use Yeast on offense.

Lots of options out there. Don't get me wrong, I would like to get Martin, but no way is one WR going to make this class any less impressive.

I posted this exact same point earlier or in a different thread. It almost becomes a hindrance as kids want to spread their wings. See Bohannen's, Uthoff, Two other top Iowa receivers that went to Michigan. Kid's don't always want to stay at home where they've been for the last 18 years. The only advantage is their family being able to see all home games.
