Open practice

I'm at the open practice and didn't see any other threads on it, so I can post some updates on what's going on.

KMM, Mitchell, Harris, King and McCarron were the guys fielding punts. Didn't see any muffs, and there's a pretty stiff breeze today.

They're doing offensive and defensive walk through right now.

Scherff is a monster. He had two pancake blocks during a blocking drill a few minutes ago.

QBs and WRs working now. Rudock looked sharp on the intermediate routes against the wind. His deep ball against the wind had a very slight wobble, but covered 50+ yards. Looked like he might have added a bit of arm strength.

Beathard looked a little off, as several of his passes wobbled, and his deep ball against the wind was a duck.

Shimonek had a quick release, good strength, and a tight spiral on all his throws. Obviously throwing against air, but he looked good and drew a big cheer when he hit Mitchell on 55-yarder. Put the ball on a dime and had plenty of zip on it.

TM,

Thanks for helping the rest of us out, its kind of ******** we can not stream the game from the big ten network. I understand Michigan, Ohio st st and Nebraska in terms of ratings might come first. Indiana can be streamed but now Iowa, that's ****.

Well we still have a spring game don't we? I thought this was just a second open practice.

Someone told me Paul Rhoads was picketing outside in the parking lot holding up a Cyclone Territory sign. Is that true? Or did he have the stop sign that Irving was carrying the other night. Irving may want to keep that sign for when they are actually playing a game. It would be helpful to slow down the freeway of uninterrupted RB's that flow through their defense every year.

Comments on the WR's and LB's would be very nice. I'm curious to hear how the RS freshman receivers look. We know what we have in KMM, Smith, Hillyer, and Powell. I'd love comments on the young guys.

Have to agree with tm. I think Rudock, Beathard, and Shimonek all look solid. There's definitely a stiff breeze.

Rudock's very consistent with his accuracy. Beathard and Shimonek seem to have a tiny bit more zip on the ball, but they don't seem to be quite as accurate. I also agree that Shimonek has been been a little more impressive than Beathard during the warm-ups. We'll see what happens when they start scrimmaging.

Shimonek looked less impressive in skelly. Still threw a nice ball, but he struggled at times reading the coverage; he threw into great coverage a couple times.

Rudock underthrew KMM on a deep ball. It looks like 50-55 yards is the cap on what he can cover in the air. Looked solid on the short and intermediate stuff, as expected.

Beathard had some more ducks, even on some of the shorter throws. Looks like an off day for him.

Powell was in the first package with Smith and KMM, FWIW. He definitely looks a little thicker this year.

Mitchell got open against the 2s pretty consistently. Willies struggled to do that at times, particularly against jams.

Alston covered McCarron out of the slot a few times and stayed with him every time, breaking up a couple passes. Perry also looked okay in coverage, but I didn't see him a lot.

The big surprise to me was Malik Rucker running with the 1s at corner. Fleming was with the 2s.

Just to note regarding the underthrown deep ball to KMM... It was a completion. Could have been a TD had he not been underthrown tho. With that said it was the deepest pass completed during the 7 on 7's.

#89 Vandeberg got open for a couple nice gains from Rudock during 7 on 7's as well. Rudock had the most completions of the three.

Willies caught a short one and had a nice lil run after the catch when he broke it to the sideline also.

Looks like depth could be an issue on the OL. 2s haven't looked too good against the defensive 2s and 3s.

The KMM deep ball was still a nice play, I agree.

KMM was the only receiver to get open much during the redone drills. Of the freshmen, I think Mitchell has been the most impressive today. He's done a better job getting open than Willies.

Rudock just had a short dump off pass tipped, Spearman intercepted it and would have had a pick 6 more than likely.

Both lines look pretty good. Trading good plays, which is what you want to see in intrasquads.
