Coach Terry Brands ran practice today which was focused toward mat wrestling. I thought intensity was lacking at the start but really increased as practice went along. The wrestlers had the "week off", although most got individual work in most of the week and I think that was the reason for the slow start.

Before the practice actually started, Brands had Clark and Trizzino working out. They were really going hard with Clark getting the better of most exchanges. You can still see the rust on Joey as he is pretty hesistant on his offense, but he has come a long way. It's too bad Clark has to sit a year as we could really use him. Clark's transformation into the "Hawkeye" style of wrestling is under way. No longer is he just taking nose dives trying to execute low singles. He has really heavy hands and he is starting to really impose his will which allows him to wrestle more confidently. He still needs to practice with a better pace, but that is improving everyday.

As for practice I was really impressed with Metcalf and Marion. As you can expect the pace was outstanding with Metcalf really pushing it. Marion really responded well and competed hard, he has really stepped up. To be honest I am surprised, but pleasantly surprised.

Lofthouse and Keddy had some heated exchanges that had to be broke up by Brands. Dennis got the better of McDonough throughout the practice. Matt looks really lean, I wonder how well he will handle the weight towards the end of the season. Ironside really took it to Leclere, Schwab beat up on Moore and Beatty was really working Loera. Janssen was showing some good things from his feet which is a good sign, as he is really tough on top. To me there really hasn't been that much change in Ballweg, he just cannot create enough motion from his feet. He wrestles with really heavy feet which makes it easy for guys to get penetration to his legs. Borschell has been battling an injury and they are taking it slow with him. Morning* has really improved his motion from the bottom and on his feet, now I just hope it translates to competition.

Thats it for now, if there are any questions just post them and I will answer as soon as I can!

Thanks USAFHawk, it is great getting some wrestling news. In your opinion who do you think will be in the Hawks line-up at 157, Ballweg, Janssen or Kerr (assuming he certifies at 157)? I would love for Janssen to get the first crack. I have really liked what I have seen from him when he has gotten a chance. I have a really hard time believing Kerr will keep his strength and weight under control at 157. I thought there was a better chance of him wrestling 174 this year. As far as Ballweg is concerned your observations confirm my fears for him.

As far as Ballweg goes, I really like the his work ethic. He has improved in certain situations and with a new season comes a renewed confidence. Last year he really regressed I thought and most of that was due to confidence. I just think his lack of motion really restricts his ability to be competitive against AA type of talent. Kerr really looks lean and still has to get down a bit to wrestle 157, we'll see if he can make it. Janssen has really taken the opportunity he has in front of him seriously. He has always been stuck behind Perry and Morning* since he has been here, but now knowing he could be the man has really increased his dedication. I really like what I have seen from him, although he still has to improve on his feet. I think I would give the nod to Janssen just because I think he is a little better from the feet. Now if Kerr makes it that would throw another wrench into the scenario, but the competition is what we need at this weight.

One other question I had for USAFhawk or anyone else who knows. Is Stew Gilmor still with the Hawks? I don't see him on your list so I was wondering if you just did not include him or if he has moved on. I was just thinking if he is gone then the chances of bringing in his brother have to deminish also. That is if we are even interested in Walt.

Thank you very much for these updates. Glad to see that Wrestling season is heating up and we are getting updates on this board.

You list Joe Slaton as being on the injured list. How bad is he hurt and will he still compete for the 141 spot at the beginning of the season?

Stew is still with the team, just didn't get to see much of him on Saturday.

Joe has been wrestling some, it is not anything serious, just a nagging injury. He was going through a bike workout with Carew, Ramos and Faher during practice. Joe is not eligible until 2nd semester, but if he takes care of his classwork he will compete for the 141 spot along with Leclere and Marion.

so mad i missed this practice and i was even in iowa city at 6 am!! nobody wanted to go with him and i was dressed up like hayden fry...should of gone as gable..dang

Not serious and he is going to be ready to go.

I thought that was probably part of the problem with Jay last year - nursing nagging injuries. I expect big things out of him this year and hope that he is not going through that again this year.
