OPEN LETTER TO FRAN

Open Letter to Fran -

Fran. Ummm. Little confused and ALOT upset here big guy. As somebody who eats, sleeps, and drinks Hawkeye Basketball, ummmm.....I'm wondering about a few things:
- "Gabe is and has been our best rebounder. Period". I seem to remember a couple of weeks ago hearing this out of your mouth. We can't rebound to save our lives right now, yet, Gabe see's 5 minutes of playing time a game if he's lucky? Really? Help me out here.
- Eric May is back to playing EXACTLY like he did 3/4 of last year - scared, passive, afraid to shoot the ball, etc, etc, etc. Yet, he continues to start 7 games into the season? Really? Little confusing. Does he have pictures of you that maybe you dont want folks to see?
- our 3 position BLOWS in just about every facet of the game, especially when it comes to rebounding. You specifically mentioned the lack of rebounding from the 3 in your press conference after the Clemson game. Didnt you recruit Aaron White as a 3? "He's the most versatile kid I've ever coached". Really? I see. So how about giving him some minutes at the 3 and see how that maybe goes Fran?
- Basabe. Need I say more? SIT THE KID UNTIL HE WAKES UP! or...does he have the same pictures of you that Eric does?
- Ogelsby. Seems to me he's the only kid that can score. START THE KID ALREADY!
- Archie. He apparantly was good enough to start the first 3 games of the season (or something like that), but now, cant seem to find his way to the scorer's table? Hmmmmmm.
- just curious. But. Ever heard of PUTTING A KID ON HIS A$$ in order to make a statement and make him think a bit after watching 3 ball after 3 ball after 3 ball drain the bottom of the net?

PLAY THE DAMN FRESHMEN ALREADY! Do really think they are gonna disappoint you all that much compared to what's going on right now? All's we heard was what a great rebounder Gabe was. How Josh was and is the best shooter your have ever seen in your 20+ years of coaching. And, ummmmm.....how Aaron is the most versatile 6'8" kid you have ever coached. REALLY? Then how about showing us what you apparently see in practice every day vs the ******** we are currently seeing on the court? Or...are you just handing the fans a line on these kids?

We all know you can hold just an absolutely fabulous press conference and talk your way out of just about anything. Hurray. Maybe politics awaits you in the not so distant future. There's this saying "talk the talk...but walk the walk". Enough of the talk.

Wake up Fran. The season is approaching the 1/4 mark. Conference play is approaching real, real quick. And, ummmmm....it's pretty apparent you have absolutely NO CLUE what your rotation is, nor what the concept of defense is. Suppose your players are comfortable with their "roles" on the team when you or your coaches dont know yourselves? And that builds confidence in 18 and 19 year old kids? Really? Winning is a tad bit more than scoring 80+ points a game, which we heard we'd be doing more and more this season. And oh...by the way. Pressing? Running? Could have sworn we heard we were gonna see that religiously this year. Maybe I miss understood you.

Sorry Coach. If you sense a bit of sarcasim and being just a bit upset, ummmm....well....enough said. I'm thinking I'm not alone in my concerns.

Season Greetings.

TL;DR - young team...second year coach (1st year with his recruits in his system) - Patience young grasshoppers....yadda yadda yadda...

I stopped reading after the demand to see Gabe more than 5 minutes.

If Iowa has to rely on Gabe Olaseni to win this year Iowa is going to be in big big trouble. He is not ready to be seeing significant minutes and really could benefit with a redshirt.

Sad thing is you're right....but so is the OP...Fran DID say that Gabe was the best rebounder....and yet Iowa is absolutely pitiful on the boards....yet he doesn't play....so either A. Fran used the fans to try and pump Gabe's confidence and thought he could play us and we wouldn't know better. or B. Gabe is the best we have and for some reason Fran won't play him.

Either way it's sad....

The rotation is, at best, desparation scatter-shot. No one can get into a flow when they get the hook every 4 or 5 minutes, yet he continues to lament how no one is getting on track. Hmmmmm:rolleyes:

All his focus is betting on the come regarding May, Basabe and Brommer, yet they continue to fail to perform, game after game after game. That's putting players before the team and sending a very bad message to your more talented freshmen and incoming recruits, as well as the guys that are willing to work harder (YES! It is an effort and intensity and pride issue as much as it is a talent / funk issue).

You're losing in awesomely embarrassing ways as it is. Does he think there's some glory for Cartwright, Gatens and Brommer in this? Fran gives the impression that he is astute enough to recognize the big picture and has the integrity to build for the future of the program. It's time to put that into action.

This is, without debate, the worst performing Iowa basketball team in my memory. Far worse than anything even Lick threw on the floor. (Notice I said "worse performing", not least talented, which makes it all the more sickening.) The writing is on the wall that this team has no competent floor leadership and next to zero fortitude. They will probably get rolled in 18 to 20 of their 24 remaining games (hope to beat Brown, C-Ark, Boise St, and Minny, Indy and NwU at home).

There is absolutely NOTHING to play for maintaining the status quo. On a positive note, there is absolutely NOTHING to lose overhauling the status quo. Right now, the gamble with the least to lose and most to gain is not on Basabe, Brommer, Cartwright, Gatens and May getting on track but on honing the skills and, most importantly, developing the competitive toughness of Oglesby, White, Olaseni, McCabe and Marble. They need to gain experience and take their lumps.

Worst. Post. Ever.

I think Fran is actually doing a good job bringing the freshmen along gradually. It didn't seem to help Gatens, May, or Basabe to succeed in the future by playing starter minutes as freshmen. It also seems to have helped Brusk to sit and learn.

It would be a terrible idea to throw the freshmen to the wolves. Get them some playing time yes, but they are not ready to carry the load. If you put them out there and let them get torn apart night after night, they will develop a losers mentality. We don't need that any more than we already have it.

About the only person who isn't getting "Open letters" these days is Tom Brands, and that's probably because people are afraid he would kick their *** if they did.

Shoot, I wouldn't be surprised to check my email this afternoon and find an "Open letter" from Vintage about my spelling and grammar skills.

Hes TRYING to get a 9 man rotation going, but it isnt working. Nobody is getting in the flow. Cartwright needs to play 38 minutes per night, as bad as Basabe has been, so does he.

You may want to change your user name as it appears you know little or nothing about basketball.

I'm just a fan of a rival team but I've seen numerous "Open Letter" posts before and yours is the stupidest. Carry on.
