One reason that Lick should be nervous

The fire is now being directed at Barta instead of LIck.

Barta at this point is being faced with this reality.

His future is tied directly to Lick's. If he keeps Lick and it doesn't work out, he himself witll be looking for a new job. Tough position for Barta, don't envy him.

If that truly is the case, then he also deserves to be fired, if he keeps Lick around for another year.

Barta isn't even remotely on any type of hot seat. The budget is good and the Iowa football is paying the bills. He has done an excellent job at fund raising at Iowa.

Lick's success or failure will have no impact on Barta's future.

Sadly, I suspect this is true. Because I think it will only be when Barta's Brooks Brothers slacks are a tad warm in the back will he moved to get off his behind and make a change.

I don't know what fund raising he has done but the money received from the BTN should not be included as what he has "raised".

It appears that there is a new basketball facility being built and I believe that there is a new football facility on the horizon also. That comes from fund raising.

It's not. Neither is the money the football program brings in.

Everyone knew that fund raising was probably Barta's best asset when he was brought in as our AD. He hasn't disappointed in that aspect of his job.

I would disagree to this extent: Barta might not get the chance to hire a third basketball coach if Lick fails, and his next hire fails as well.

God, I hate to think what Iowa basketball would be like if that scenario were to come to pass.

I would agree with that. But we are a long long way from that happening. I still think that if Barta does fire Lick, he should have help in hiring the next coach. Bring in Lute, Mr. Davis and others who have had an impact on Iowa basketball over the years and let them have their opinions heard.

1. This is a new development?
2. No it isn't. If Lickliter doesn't work out, Barta won't be fired with him. Barta's future will be tied to the next basketball coach, because then that will be a trend.

Why don't you just make the argument to fire Barta... since you are making the argument that he isn't capable of doing his job.

Because there are other job duties involved with being an AD than just hiring and firing coaches. In the grand scheme of things, hiring coaches are a small part of a college AD's job. And at a smaller school like Iowa, fundraising is essential to his job. One could argue that it is the most vital part of his job.

Since he is succeeding at that, I don't think he is feeling any pressure. And I think it would be smart to have others give him input if he did have to hire another coach. Give him the resources to succeed this time so we don't have to worry about firing him.

As much as this hurts... I now understand and agree and I was wrong.

Barta has the success of the football program to fall back on.

With that said.... I would still hope that Iowa has an AD that is capable of hiring quality coaches. Of course, why would I think Barta is capable of this... he did hire Lick after all.

Damn... how did this workout... I'm the one who now wants to fire Barta.

Didn't he hire Tom Brands as well?

Burky, I would agree with the statement that fundraising for Iowa athletics seems to be going well enough--at least well enough to start on an important and long-delayed improvement of our basketball facilities. However, I don't know how much of that can be attributed to Gary Barta. Yes, he's been one of the people in charge of the process (though not the only one). But I would argue that the ongoing success of athletic fundraising at Iowa is mostly the product of the continued loyalty and generosity of the fans, and the success we've experienced in other sports--most obviously, football.

The same argument came up in the context of evaluating Bowlsby's tenure at Iowa. Yes, he seemed to do a good job of stewarding the task of fundraising at Iowa. But how much of that success was really attributable to him?

I would argue that given the long-term history of generous giving to the athletic department by Iowa fans, spanning the tenures of at least three athletic directors, the hiring of coaches is the most important reflection of how well an Iowa athletic director is doing his job.

Even someone who is very good at his job can make a mistake. In fact, it happens to all of the best in every field. The real measure of the best is how they respond to having made a mistake.

We'll see about that.

Ok... Barta needs an extension... I think I'm going to have the sleep on this one.

I didn't know if he did, or if hiring Brands was one of Bowlsbys last moves. Still, if we're all going to rip Barta for hiring Lickliter, we have to give him credit for hiring Brands.

Right?

Right

The only issue is that no matter how good Hawkeye wrestling is, if Hawkeye basketball was even something close to decent they would fill more seats and bring more money in.
