One more tealeaf on the Forbes chatter

Iowa can't afford to take someone without experience unless it's the Duke or Kansas guy. I'll be pretty upset if they hired Forbes. I doubt he fires up the fan base. This is going to be a fiasco if names like Gregory (yes I know he is a head coach)....Forbes....ect come up. I doubt Forbes knows how to run a program or deal with the media. Every coach has to be a recruiter so I don't get the hype.

Yeah, you know, a Duke or Kansas guy CAN'T fail.

What the hell is so special about the assistants at Duke and Kansas that they deserve special consideration over everyone else.

I for one think that it is important to hire a guy who will be comfortable at Iowa, and vice-versa. Iowa is a different place, and no every coach can survive here. Lute didn't like it, Raveling didn't like it, Alford never got it, and Lick never got it.

In the last 30 years, we have found one coach who understands the state, understands the people, and acclimated himself into the community.

So as far as I am concerned, having a guy who can be comfortable at Iowa is a HUGE concern. Certainyl not the most important factor, but a big one.

Just because Forbes hasn't been a head coach at the D1 level doesn't mean he doesn't know how to run a program or deal with the media.

As far as your recruiting comment, yes every coach has to be a recruiter, but some have far more and better contacts or connections than others as well and as far as I can tell Forbes has some great contacts or connections.

Just because someone is from Duke or Kansas doesn't make them better, especially if they are younger and haven't developed relationships with AAU coaches and high school coaches like Forbes has developed.

Well holy hell, we agree on something.

That being said, unless you are looking for big city living, you have to be a jerk to not like Iowa City.

Forbes would be a great choice for Iowa. This is a honorable man, great coach and can turn this program around. He knows how to recruit, works 24 hours a day and will get the job done.
Getting Forbes would be great for Iowa and a loss for Tennessee.

I have mixed feelings about Forbes, but this we know. He's one hell of a recruiter, one could argue that's the strength of Pearl's program.

And being from Iowa he'd really "sell" the Iowa experience well. If he's already good, imagine adding that little extra bump (passion for his home state) to his recruiting acumen.

The big question: Can he coach on the bench?

Everywhere he has gone has gotten much better as a direct result of his recruiting abilities. Texas A&M improved a ton under Gillespie but that was also because of Forbes getting players to go there. Tennessee has been very good the past 4 yrs and a lot of that has to do with Forbes.

I agree it may not be the most exciting hire, but it could be a very effective hire.

First off I'll say I've been in favor of Forbes since I first read about him last week.

The only downside was that he's not a big name and isn't going to instantly revive the fanbase. But really, what good will it do to revive the fanbase only to slip back to our current depths? First and foremost, we just need a good coach. Exciting or not. If this guy can recruit like it seems he's able to recruit... I feel like we'll be excited soon enough.

McDermott has shown he can recruit.....but hasn't done ZIP with that talent. You need more than a good recruiter.

Effective = exciting in pretty short order

True, his only head coaching job was at the JUCO level. But wasn't he like 68-28 or something like that? If it turns out he's just a recruiter, we likely won't be seeing him anytime soon. But I'll live with a decent coach and great recruiter.

People worried about Forbes being likeable or engaging...STOP. Kids love him and parents respect him. He will tell it like it is and Is very down to earth. I played, worked and traveled the recruiting trails with him back in the day and every moment was great even as we worked or butts off.. He is very well respected by many people in college basketball IE ...Van Coleman . I think this is the job he has waited for and will be great here. If successful will not leave. He will hire assistants from alll over with many backgrounds.

I know he favored a form of the Flex offense at one time and the style of play he will incorpate will fit the players he has at the time ..but will eventually be uptempo with some press mixed in. He loves Atheltes and will teach them how too play his within his rules.

Who has he recruited in the last 4 years other than Brackins and Colvin and a bunch of Juco's and I don't think you want to go that route as it is starting to show in Ames.

I don't know what your definition of exciting is but here is my two cents.

Will he make everybody start doing chest bumps at his introductory press conference...No
Will he make young college girls get excited because of his hair...No

But if he comes in and uses his JC connections to get a player to help next year (something Lick was incapable of doing) and then signs a couple of highly ranked recruits for 2011 I would be pretty excited. Since he would be hired in April that wouldn't be a bad first six months on the job. I actually think most of our players including the recruits would do pretty well in a fast-breaking style except Cougill.
