One Last Time: Starting 5

I know we've been over this, but why have Baer only be able to be effective for 23-25 minutes as a backup when he can be effective for more minutes as a starter?

I would counter that with: if Nicholas Baer was the Big Ten's 6th man of the year, why mess with it? Maybe he's at his best when he plays fewer minutes.

I would guess that 90% of 6th man of the year award winners start the following year if they have eligibility left.

Olaseni was so effective doing the same thing his entire career. FM could have easily started him but he was better vs either slightly fatigued starters or the second team D. Maybe Baer can be effective at the start of game and the half but in the limited sample size, he has been less effective.

Baer is too good & I think Iowa will be too deep for Baer to start during conference play. If Garza & Cook play up to expectations, it may be a waste to start Baer. I agree Wagner or Kriener to start the game. Wagner’s defense & Kriener is a solid shooter who doesn’t turn it over. It’s going to be fun to watch. Thanks Fran.

Go Hawks!

I remember a few times last season he looked dead ass tired towards the end of games. His hustle and chaos are what makes him so effective so I would think 20-24 minutes are probably his wheelhouse.

Exactly. That's his max as a bench player. His max would be more as a starter tho. Playing 24 out of 32-ish minutes is a lot harder than playing 24 out of 40 minutes.

The NBA is obviously a lot different (teams have more regular substitution patterns), but I recently listened to discussion of the Caveliers' decision to start Love over. T. Thompson. I thought the analysts made a good point that Thompson (a dirty work and defensive specialist) had more value in the starting lineup where he could be used to neutralize the top front court scorer from other teams, and his offensive deficiencies could be minimized as he was surrounded by numerous offensive threats. Coming off the bench and playing against other teams' 2nd units, his strength (defensive stopper) would be less valuable, and his weakness (ability to create offense) would be more glaring.

Could this same argument be used to start Wagner? Does this type of thinking even translate to the college game?

Similarly, the Cavs have recently moved Dwyane Wade to the bench. They want someone to lead and be a scorer in the second unit.

Sometimes, guys play better off the bench vs starting. Whether it's the pressure of being a starter or the ability to get into the flow of the game by watching, they're just better coming in. Baer got starters minutes last year, but was a true 6th man.

As to the original question, IMHO, the only locks to start are JBo and TC. The other three positions will be based on who we are playing and/or who has been hot recently and/or who separates themselves from the rest of the team.

Just my 2¢ .. .. GO HAWKS!!!

So is everyone assuming Garza will be starting right away? I haven't been able to follow too closely, has Fran stated he will start? I think most agree he will be a starter eventually. I can see him coming off the bench for the first few games though.

I wouldn't be shocked to see this for the first couple of games:
1. Bohannon
2. Moss
3. Baer
4. Wagner
5. Cook

Note that Wagner started 18 games, 5th most, last year but was 7th in minutes at 16mpg. Baer deserves to start. Cook can play the 5, especially early on when opposing bigs don't have much size. Watching the rotations work itself out will be fun. I can't wait for Friday night's first look.

Absolutely. Its all about the makeup of your team.

With the make up of this years Iowa team, I think we want the shots going to Cook, Moss, Bohannon, and Garza on the first unit. Wagner will be out there to set screens and hit the offensive boards. On defense Wagner will draw the toughest assignment of the wing/forwards on opposing teams.

You beat me to it. I was thinking this same lineup to start the year. Garza is probably in there before the end of the year, but I'm not so sure to start the year.

I wouldn't be shocked to see Garza start, or Wagner for that matter, but I'm going to go with this lineup.
1-Jbo
2-Moss
3-Baer
4-Cook
5-Kriener

That leaves Iowa with this coming off the bench

1-Williams/ellingson
2-Ellingson/Uhl
3-Wagner
4-Pemsl
5-Garza

Man, I don't envy FM trying to get minutes for all these guys.

Only problem with this list is lack of Nunge. Fran says he’s not a RS. He could actually be an option at 3-5.

I do think Garza starts right away, but I'm perfectly fine with being wrong.

The thing I love most about Fran is he will always play his best guys. He wasn't afraid to bring Baer in 2 years ago when all of us were wondering why the scrawny little walk-on white kid was on the floor. Fran doesn't care about age, recruiting ranking, or previous performance.
