On Wegher & Coker

If my son were a D1 athlete with a D1 Scholly in a situataion where he was expecting I would be inclined to encourage him to speak with the coaches and ask the likely hood they re recruit him if he took a season off to attend to his family, and attended school (on my dime) closer to home making accademic progress and staying in top shape.

If my son would follow that advice would be up to he and his girlfriend ultimately.

if he goes because of family, he's gone. obviously the staff would take him back as there is precedent (Tillison) but Wegher's leaving the team to go back home is for good reason. Both his family and her family would be there to help take care of the child. ultimately, would be nice if one of the grandparent's were in a position to move to the IC area to help so both could continue with their educations.

the redshirting thing is also something that really doesn't help this situation for Brandon - he'd still have to go to school - and what he (they) are looking at is the time needed for one or both of them to take care of the child.

That's odd, because from listening to Kirk and the rest of the team afterwards, they all seem to think he's coming back.

I suppose I should clarify that, as obviously I have no insight as to what people are thinking when they speak. What I meant by "seem to think" was that in the way that Kirk and Rick were talking about it, they think he's coming back.

As far as I'm concerned, it's just a matter of when. Obviously, with only two weeks of camp left until game week you would like it sooner rather than later, but I would like to think that even if Wegher misses this week that he'd ready to go by week two.

So who becomes the 3rd RB for the first game? Rogers? De'Andre Johnson? From what we are hearing, Coker has a slight possibility of coming back in time to be that 3rd RB, but he will have to come back aSap. That is, one week instead of two.
The 3rd RB will be decided on within two weeks.

BW is welcome back from whatever it is he is having issues with. But if he does come back one thing is for certain, he won't be playing right away. For obvious reasons - he hasn't practiced AND it would be way too much of a distraction. This team cannot have that right now, Ferentz wouldn't allow the circus anyhow. At this point he would have to come back from the shadows so as to not distract from the rest of the team. IMO...

I have been in his situation. With a good support group BW3 redshirts and they both continue their education. Forget football this kid is gonna be a man. I want him back on the team more than anyone else but I'm guessing he puts his family first. You always hear about these college athletes with kids and they never see them. Bw3 is gonna be different and we need to prepare without him this season.

I disagree with that. Regardless of when Wegher returns (if he does), it's going to be a big story. While I do agree that the team doesn't need distractions, a Wegher return will be a media and fanbase firestorm. And I guess I would rather have that happen early, than let it wait until Big Ten season.

firestorm? I think it will simply be 'wegher back with the team' and it will be discussed a day or two and that will be that. the coach and he will simply say that he had to take care of personal business and the questions will go away. he's done nothing wrong so there will be no feeding frenzy ala the sexual misconduct boys. I don't think he'll be any distraction whatsoever. The team knows what is going on, the staff knows what is going on and that is good enough.

BTW that sbl-hawk just posted another long reply over on HR. Whoever they are they seem to either be a friend or even related to BW or the girl. In any case the reply doesn't sound too favorable in regards to BW coming back. I'm not going to post any of it but you can find it on the free board on HR under the thread "Wegher".

that post seemed pretty bitter. What do they want from Iowa? - could you decipher that from that post? This person is delusional to think that any other fan base wouldn't have fans questioning what was going on given his unknown absence from the team. Morningside? Briar Cliff? wow......

I understood what he was saying, but I won't post it here, since we are still operating under the no speculation/banhammer threat.

I agree that it would be the same sort of message board rumblings from any other fanbase. I'm not saying I agree with it, just that it's basic human nature with an outlet on the internet.

The unfortunate thing about all this is that I think some Hawk fans are going to start getting bitter towards Brandon. You can start to see it in some of the posters replies on there. And I know that the message board doesn't fully represent the fanbase as a whole but I think were going to see more of that type of reaction the longer this goes on or if he decides to walk away.

norwalk - i got that sense after reading that rant from sbl. sbl, if you are his friend or family - you are not helping Iowa fan sentiment, if that is your aim.

I completely understand his/her position (if what he/she is saying is all true). Because really, Brandon shouldn't have to cater to us, but that's the sense of entitlement that some of the fans over there are getting, it seems to me. It should be the other way around. We should be supportive of him, and his friends/family don't owe Hawk fans anything. But some of the fans over there really do almost make me feel ashamed to call myself a Hawk fan, because their responses are just getting despicable. The mods really let them run wild over there.

for those still looking for the post I was indicating - follow the link provided above, and scroll down to a post by sbl hawk. it is his or her 1st post, and you can't miss it. I'm guessing it is a father or sibling of Brandon's GF. Or someone very close to the family. People are 'dumb' with these websites/facebook, etc. From the clues in the post and throughout that thread you can easily find out who she is with pictures if you are so inclined.

A second post by the poster mentioned above is somewhat discouraging about BW returning to Iowa.

I agree that Brandon's personal issues are none of our business. That being said, at some point very soon I think he has to let the team know his intentions.

If he needs to take a RS, fine. If he needs to leave altogether, fine. If he's going to be back, great, but it seems to me that the team needs some closure on this, one way or another.

both of these from @hawkeyeinsider.com:

Wegher left camp on Sunday. Ferentz met w/ him this week. Thinks he's going to go back to school. Open ended invitation back to team.

Coker out another 1-2 weeks from today w/ shoulder injury.

That's good news on the Coker front. Jon, do you think Coker will receive a redshirt? Do you think that Johnson will as well?

Maybe I am not understanding your question, but you don't 'receive' anything. You either play, or you don't. If you don't play (1 play) you can use that season as one of your 5 for 4. No one will likely know if they can RS this year until 5-6 games into the season. LY, Rogers came close to losing his in game 8 or 9 (we needed him).

Damn it! I'm a slow learner

For redshirting, if you dont play at all, you get a shirt one of your five available years. If you play in the first couple of games then get hurt for the season, you can typically use that as a redshirt year...Moeaki did this to get his 5th year, the year he got hurt early against Wisconsin...I believe that was in 2007. Had Rogers played even one play beyond the start of the 4th game, he would have burned his shirt for last year.
