On to Northwestern....

the beauty of the Big Ten bb season is that no loss lingers too long because you have another challenge staring you in the face...like NW on wednesday in CHA.

NW has their best team in a long time and delusions of NCAA glory that need to be put to bed by the Hawks...time for revenge Hawks, for that mugging that their two d-linemen administered to Ricky Stanzi, ending his season the Hawkeyes hopes for that perfect season.

Illinois and NW were the two schools I wanted to beat, after it became clear that the Hawks were not going to make a run for the tourny.
We crapped out vs the illini...but still have two shots at ruining the dream season (making NCAA for first time in NW bb history) for the Cats.

Now, that said...gonna be tough.
This is the most athletic group at NW in my memory, even with All Big Ten junior Coble out for the year.

Nash- senior having a senior season...has found his 3 point shot, and has always been a good defender. Quick, long and dangerous at the top of their half court zone trap...

Crawford- odds on fav for Frosh of the Year...again on the wing of the zone, quick long and dangerous...has a complete offensive game...

Shurna- leads league in scoring at 19/gm, again long and above average athlete who is on the other wing of that zone...very good shooter, and can go to hoop and finish at 6'8''....probably all -league this year.

Juice Thompson- 3 year starter at pg is having a great year...shooting the three very well, driving and kicking...and plays the bottom of the zone covering from side to side...quick and strong.

Mirkovic- 6'9'' soph.. center looks like an accountant, but plays like a crafty vet euro type that he is...

Deep bench includes shooter Marcotullious, and wings Cappocio,Curletti, and 7ft center Rowley...among others.

I dislike NW football intensely, but struggle to carry that over to NW bb..I kind of like Carmody's snarky sense of humor, and the way this team plays..it is an interesting team to watch play which is rare for NW.
So, I admit, I think they might deserve to make the tourny, but I hate to see the same fanbase and Fitz celebrating anything after football.

Bottom line, if Iowa cannot de-rail the NW bb train, then maybe they deserve to go to the NCAA ...but c'mon Hawks....DE-RAIL THEM!!!

I think NW loves to beat Iowa and we will get there best effort, if we beat them I will be very impressed. I think this will be a better measuring stick than any game we have had in the last month.

i think we will match up well with NW. Good defense is gonna be important with their offense looking for back door shots. im curious to see how far they extend the zone. i think this could give good oportunities to attack the basket with some interior passes and an opportunity to get some good looks at 3 from the corner. this is the best NW team i have seen, but i think its about time we pay them back for handing us some losses that just make u wanna destroy a living room.

I agree taht NW is really in our craw in both FB and BB; would love to beat them. But, it is going to be tough. They are a good team, would be higher in standings if they adn't played such a tough 1st half schedule in B10. They really looked good this weekend.

They're better than us...they're smarter than us...they're pastier than us and they're nerdier than us...

That being said...

They must go down...and they must go down HARD!

I think the 1-3-1 is going to be very hard on us. I hope Lick allows some running against this team. I would expect at least 12 possessions ending in a desperation 3 with under 3 seconds to go.

I will take the over on the 12 desperation 3 at the end of the shot clock.

First off, they are most likely an NIT team this year but it would be a good win for the Hawks. I think the Hawks will get a lot of corner threes in this game, but they may struggle overall with NW's overall height which is rather impressive. This may be the whitest game in Big Ten history though which is exciting.

Iowa matches up really well with Northwestern. I like Iowa's chances a lot.

It will be interesting how well Iowa guards the perimeter, though.

Actually, NW is starting three black players in Crawford,Juice and Nash, which makes this about the most non-white NW starting five in a decade...and Rowley comes off the bench, but has started at times.
Add in shurna, who joins Eric May as one of those white guys that can jump...and NW is way above average for them in athleticism.

But, you are right that when they put Luka,Markotullio,Carpoccio,Freundt, and Curletti on the court, vs Payne,May,Gatens,Cougill and lil lick....white-out alert!!!:)

beating northwestern on wednesday would somehow make me feel a lot better about this whole season. it's irrational, i know, but i just really, really want to beat northwestern.

if iowa somehow went 3-2 over their last five games i think it would have to be considered a success. i am hopeful but i will not hold my breath. a healthy matt gatens would help a lot.

Storm, you don't think Iowa will have a lot of problems just getting a shot off against the 1-3-1? I think the score will be close but it will be a very ugly game to watch.

I like how Iowa's D matches up with NW's Princeton's O.
Also, NW doesn't have the athletes like UM and MN do when they defend. Nash is strong as is Juice, but they don't have the length that has bugged Iowa in the past.

Spank, NW plays the very long and quick Nash(6'5') on top, with equally long and athletic Shurna(6'8'') and Crawford(6'5'') on the wings. I see Cully and Lil Lick struggling being trapped by those guys a half a foot taller...

Iowa 56
Northwestern 75

Iowa gets blown out again! Licks system doesn't work against an aggressive ZONE! His system only works against man to man. Lick will look lost again and result to playing his son more minutes! Lets face it, this season is over, the hawks are done!

Can't wait to see the meltdown here if that score happens. I'll go Iowa 63-Northwestern 60.

Meltdowns happen with any loss. The type of Meltdown hinges on what team shows up.

Northwestern without a doubt can throw the hammer down and spank Iowa tonight. Getting blown out wouldn't shock me in the least. Just the nature of the beast right now. I do see a close game tonight. Iowa will come to play, if not shame on them..

I sense that Anthony Tucker plays tonight.

Go Hawks!!!

I hope spank is right but I agree with this. I think Payne is going to have a lot of problems and with the way Gatens has been turning the ball over I think it will lead to a lot of turnovers.
