OMG! - Jewel Hampton other Practice Thoughts

1) Jewel Hampton - He is going to be fun to watch this year. He is freakishly quick, especially with his change of direction. It's not just that he is shift & cuts, but he is very productive with his cut going downhill. There is no wasted momentum. He's sees a small hole & cuts. He almost glides when he cuts & is so fluid when doing it. A joy to watch. Stay health man. If he exploits relatively small holes & is still able to get a good 3-4 yrd, that could keep Iowa out of many 3rd & longs which could be a key for this young O-line.

2) Iowa's Receiving Corps - I feel this vetern corp (including young-un Keenan Davis) is going to be a nightmare matchup for opposing teams secondaries. McNutt has the size & speed & looks to be quite comfortable at this postision now. Keenan Davis looks really solid & as if he will be productive. I didn't know what to believe with him at the last year or after this spring since he didn't have much production last year, but, I think he is going to have a great sophmore season & give secondaries another thing to plan for. Between Reisner, Herman & Fiedorowitz (sp), this will give teams fits especially in two TE sets if they block well. Fiedorowitz seems to be a freak of nature with combined size, speed & athletesim & should be able to be productive on that alone this year. He will really have to work on his blocking assignments to get more consistent playing time. Add in that DJK was not even practicing. Also, have veterans Chaney & Colin S. Think about having McNutt & Davis stretching the D & DJK sitting down in open areas. It should be fun to watch.

3) Depth of Iowa - Has Iowa ever had the quality depth that they currently do now? Many 2 deeps are household names & have had much experience in the past. Mike Daniels is very solid & it will be hard to keep him off the field.

4) Coaching Staff - This coaching staff is impressive, especially when teaching techique. It is such a compliment when hearing that there is not a better place to play & learn techique or how organized the practice is ran. It seems to be all business & the players seem to be focussed.

5) Players to Keep An Eye On -

a) Karl Klug - He seems to be really solid & always in position on each play. He seems to be the foundation & leader for that interior D-line.
b) Keenan Davis - He should have a great year & much more productive year than last. The combo of he, McNutt & DJK should be fun to watch.
c) Mike Daniels - Iowa will not lose anything when he is rotating in. I could see him at least getting half the playing time by yrs end.
d) CJ Fiedorowitz - I don't see Iowa shying away from utilizing his freaky size, speed & athletisim this year. I see them trying to exploit the linebackers covering him by getting him between the LB & secondary 15-20 yrds downfield. I'm excited to see what he can do so early on.

I hope so. But I get the feeling that Sandeman and others are going to get a lot of playing time. I would prefer to have Davis out there, but after re-watching the Orange Bowl last night, Sandeman was their guy.

OMG!!!! I totally agree and was thinking the same thing.

Seriously, what is the point of putting OMG in the title anyway?

It's a nice problem to have. Having starters like DJK and McNutt ... but then also having guys like Davis, Sandeman, and Chaney. Under Ferentz, Iowa has never had such experienced and talented depth at WR.

I watched the BTN Iowa preview and Van Sloten really stood out to me. I believe he was @ RG during several series. I thought he looked good.

Just to bring out the azzes that think all they need to do is b--ch. What's it to you anyway?

If you can't handle a message board then leave, control freak!!

or

Don't take the time to respond azz!!

glad Kirk hired Soup, or is that just a coincidence that our WR corp is as strong as it is

Also, what about Don Nordmann into the mix? He seemed to have a very productive spring practice. Do you see him contributing this season? He also has nice size at 6' 6".

Not trying to be an azz, just wondering if you were really this excited over watching a practice on TV.

I guess seeing Jewel run & making the cuts that he was able to make really pumped me up. It surprised me & he brings some different attributes compared to the other RB's. I started the thread to mainly talk about Hampton but then included other thoughts.

Fair enough, I will admit I was impressed with Hampton in the little we saw. Losing BW hurts but I still think Iowa will be fine without him and Hampton IMO is the better back anyway.

I agree with almost everything you say, Melrosehawkins.

But I don't see how Daniels will come away with half of the snaps per game by year end. Why would we rotate out guys that are better half the time?

I guess if between two spots there are 50 snaps a game each, that is 100 total snaps, and you think he will get the equivalent of half of the snaps of one of those spots by rotating into the two spots, then he would get 25 snaps a game while the other two would get 37 and 38, I could MAYBE see that.

But I don't get the impression that's what you were thinking when you made the comment.

Otherwise I find it hard to argue with anything else you said.

Jewel Hampton will have a monster year this year. He will be the starter when the Big 10(soon to be B16) starts.

I think no question Jewel is the starter by the big 10 season. He looked like an NFL player verse college kids on TV last night.
