Oliver Martin...

It's amazing what a couple good players in your career can do for perception.

Right. Turning the San Diego program around and going 11-1 twice there and then 11-1 at Stanford and going to the Super Bowl along with three NFC Championship Games in four seasons, none of that mattered. Having a couple of good players is what made a difference in perception only, not reality.

Whatever. You don’t have to like the guy. I sure don’t. But don’t act like he isn’t a pretty good coach.

Really, no ego? Is that why KF has to have his way in all facets of the football team even though he doesn't know, in some cases, what he's doing? Come on. Tell me there aren't yes men at Iowa. Are there any no men?

Have you seen...any...of his interviews or press conferences? He's usually pretty humble and almost always self-deprecating. He doesn't seem to seek glory or go out of his way for press interviews or do these silly trips to Rome like Harbaugh does.

He's just stubborn as all hell. He believes in conservative football. He believes in base defense and nothing flashy. Minimize mistakes and give your team a chance to win. All of those things are Kirk superlatives. Ego is not one.

I agree. Michigan’s problem is the QB, these guys are awful. The best they’ve had is Rudock

Oliver was a true frosh this year right? Or no? Not even sure, all I can say is that ...him not playing or contributing or being "buried" on the depth chart isn't a reveling thing, especially at a school like Michigan with that type of talent. I am sure he knows that and hasn't regretted much. If he continues to stay where he is - he could end up transferring tho - and I am sure Iowa would love to have him.

Maybe you or the original poster could enlighten me on what you think shows in anyway that Ferentz is more interested in himself then the team winning.
I already did, in post #9 of this thread.

Hiring BF as OC can't even be argued as being anything other than self-serving. "Who else would agree to the job?" doesn't count as an excuse because that, again, speaks to KF serving himself more than the program.

Its totally self-serving, but GD was a disaster so he clearly wanted to go back within the comfy confines of his Bill Belichick-ian world.

Hiring a relative as a coach isn't even remotely unheard of. See Stoops, Snyder, Gruden, Pete Carroll, Lane Kiffin, Randy Edsall, etc

Hmmm... Really? Bet you'd have a hard time finding more then a few successful (FBS) head coaches that weren't that way... You'd have to be in order to be a good head coach. There's an old saying... "you stick your head above the crowd and you'll get the tomatoes thrown at you." Just look at today's current list of highly successful coaches... Saban, Meyer, and so on...

My complaint with hiring BF as OC is less about him being related than it is about there being zero evidence that he can take the O to a level higher than it's been.

And, I get what you said about GD- you're right. But, that again gets back to my point about comfort zone > wins w/ KF, right?

KOK------>head coach experience before KF hired him
GD--------->title-winning OC for a blueblood before KF hired him
BF--------->father is the head coach

for Gester vvvv

Well it is, indirectly. Martin bailed on Iowa because of a shitty offense. And it’s still shitty

Can we all take a deep breath and think about this logically. Does anyone really think OM was this teams savior? I watched this kids tape and he is a slot receiver. At best a little better than NE. We needed/need speed on the outside and that’s what the coaching staff focused on. I think ISM and B. Smith were upgrades last year and locket locket and T.tracey are too.

Not trying to bash the guy, I wish him well. But I was far from blown away

BF worked for Beliechek for awhile... I don't think he does favors in that regard. I could be wrong but he's in the business of winning at the highest level and I can't see him just giving BF a job out of charity for any length of time. Other coaches were offering him gigs when he came back to Iowa. So as much as I get the whole nepotism thing from those that don't pay attention it's just not real. He's as qualified as any of the other young bucks out there in high profile gigs if not more. He grew up in IC. Played HS and college ball at a high level. Pretty sure he wants to win and succeed as much or more then anyone else. I'm not going to rail on him... Yet. He deserves as fair a shake as anyone else
