Having the speed is the easiest way to get open. The speed to catch the long shots downfield and 'T. Smith' them for a TD. Having the speed, after getting open, to catch an intermediate route, make a man miss and outrun the rest of the field is also an easy way of scoringThe best receivers run good routes and have good hands. A 4.57 guy can get open and run after catch about as well as a 4.43 guy.

The article this thread is based on, the Howe article, mentions former Hawkeye receivers KMM and McNutt as mentors to Oliver. The article also mentions the 2 former Hawkeyes imparted knowledge from training camps and NFL experience that I took to mean knowledge learned by the 2 outside of Iowa training camps and teaching experience. Maybe Howe could elaborate on this. I'm also wondering if Martin has a leg up on comprehending Greg Davis pass patterns since his mentors McNutt and KMM are former NFL, albeit brief, receivers.and they've had NFL experience finding the soft spot in pass defenses and being on the same page as the QB to be open just like a Davis pass offense. Not enough Hawkeye fans (and recruits, I guess) take note that Davis' passing offense can be a stepping stone to receiving in the pros.
Jerry rice
Everyone wants to use Jerry Rice as an example of a slow receiver that made it big in the pros but no one wants to say what Rice had to endure to become the best.Having speed is a bonus but give me a 4.57 receiver with good hands and route running over a 4.4 guy with average hands and route running.
I would say being able quickly cut and change direction is way more important than 40 time for getting open.
Seriously though, you're right about 40 times, they are a bit overrated. I can almost guarantee you Vandeberg doesn't run a 4.4, but finds more holes in the defense than swiss cheese.40 times can show you something but is equally misleading. It CAN show comparison speed, but how often do you see someone run 40 yards untouched?
I ran a 4.9 forty back in the day and I am the best athlete I've ever met. We would have won state if coach put me in the game.

And, here, I thought you hated Greg Davis' passing offense...Boy, I was wrong....I can almost guarantee you Vandeberg doesn't run a 4.4, but finds more holes in the defense than swiss cheese.
Was Vandeberg not our best receiving option without a doubt? Don't get me wrong, I hate GD's passing scheme, but while we still had MVB this year there was at least some success with it.Once he got hurt is when it went down the toilet. And, here, I thought you hated Greg Davis' passing offense...Boy, I was wrong.

VDB isn't that physical of a receiver. Doesn't have elite jumping ability. Doesn't have elite speed, although I'd say speed was one of his better characteristics. That and catching the ball. Can't really muscle for the 50-50 balls. Was Vandeberg not our best receiving option without a doubt? Some rumblings out there as well that Michigan is no longer after Martin, or were slow playing him anyway. Think it is down to Iowa and Notre Dame at this point.
I seem to recall Leshun Daniels doing this quite a few times this year. What is his 40? I'm guessing sub 4.4...
