Oliver Martin Back on Iowa Campus Monday, Will Join Hawkeyes This Week

There is some precedent here, as others have been granted a hardship waiver based on coaching changes. Michigan changed both their offensive coordinator and WR coach so that would be OM’s best case here.

It’s a toss up with the NCAA at this point, seems like they just flip a coin to decide, of course the big schools get a loaded coin.

It has been noted he was on the two deep post spring practice. I just don't see how he gets a waiver then for the OC change if that is the reason listed on his application.

A precedent has already been set a long time ago that kids can get waivers for coaching changes. Michigan changed OCs and that has been grounds for waivers being granted in the past.

To not try and take advantage of that would be foolish.

If he was on the two deep after spring practice as is being reported, then I don't see how that gets approved for waiver.

Trying to figure out of the ncaa thinks in these situations is a fool’s errand.

OM and Iowa aren’t expecting a granting of the waiver, but there is no harm in trying.

So he showed up to spring ball and was listed on the two deep but maybe he makes the argument he didn’t like the new system. Your point here is pretty meaningless. Does he have to transfer the instant the coaching change is made or can he at least see what the new coach is like and how he fits first before leaving his school?

Granted he might not get the waiver because who knows with the NCAA but it will have nothing to with him being on the two deeps during spring ball if he doesn’t get it.

EXACTLY! He will argue that he is now being forced to play in a system that he never wanted to play in. He had the option to go to spread teams coming out of HS, and he choose to play in a pro style offense. His argument has nothing to do with a "depth chart".

I don't think this is a case of if you can't beat them, join them.
One thing I admire about KF is that he always pretty much says, that these things come down to trying to understand the rules.
When you are a person who runs his life, his home or a college team buy treating everybody the same, this is important.
How can a person be expected to do or not do something if they don't clearly understand?
I get that every situation is different. I get that you can't draw a hard line.
But we all know consistency is needed.
We know it from raising kids. We know it from being a boss. We just know.
It's hard enough to win at life anyway, but when they keep changing the rules, well it's like playing a made up game with a 3 year old girl.

So you darn right they need to apply for a waiver.

Why even apply for a waiver when he clearly does not qualify? Oliver Martin knows the rules. The coaches all know the rules. Everybody knows Martin needs to sit out a year. Why waste the NCAA's time with a waiver request?

I'm pretty sure the NCAA owes us one at this point. My god...the elephant dick they used on Drew Ott was completely unnecessary. Do they try to right a wrong here. I didn't know the WR coach was replaced also. That's interesting...OC and WR coach...how that doesn't factor in with some of the other waivers that have already happened will be interesting. NCAA has set a bad example by granting waivers. It may be a situation where they were only on campus for one year. Martin has been there two years and they are going to a wide open passing game...better for receivers one could argue...despite being a different philosophy from Pro Style.

I believe it does. Change and lack of playing time I think both needed. I don't think they are gonna accept a new OC came in and we played around for a while and I just don't like him. So far it seems only head coach change has been allowed in terms of staff changes, so at least if they claim this we will get more clarity to the rules or set a precedent for future.

I have zero understanding of the rules, but it sounds to me like you are just guessing as well, which is fine. At this point nobody has a good understanding of the rules.

OM would have still been enrolled in classes so I don’t see why he couldn’t at least see how he felt in the new system. Also where is this depth chart that shows him in the two deeps? I don’t think it’s public information and I don’t think you can start asking prior schools to provide their depth charts past tense. Every school would be incentivized to say oh yup he was a starter he was going to play so he’s not eligible next year when Iowa plays Michigan.

Just found an article about Tate Martell getting his waiver. Sounds like it helped that OSU didn’t put up a fight. With Michigan being in our conference that’s unlikely.

I’m leaning towards he’s not going to get his waiver, but it has absolutely nothing to do with where he sat on Michigan’s depth chart.

He just won't be able to argue that the change killed his playing time prospects in my opinion. The spread I think most of us would agree is more a pass first offense and tends to make WRs in those systems look like super stars.

KF in the past has disparaged other schools for having done it in what would be similar situations. So itd be somewhat hypocritical of KF to now go for this to me.
Wouldn't be any different than Kirk not allowing his own commits to take visits elsewhere, but at the same time bringing in recruits from other schools who are already committed somewhere else.

He does that.

This is the wording, "A request for immediate eligibility can now be granted if the transfer was due to "documented mitigating circumstances that are outside the student-athlete's control and directly impact the health, safety and well-being of the student-athlete."
1) There's been zero consistency from the NCAA regarding granting waivers. If you don't buy that, Drew Ott would like a word.

2) If people who run athletics programs and make their livings interpreting NCAA rules can't figure it out, a bunch of dorks on an internet message board don't have a fucking prayer.

You can cite the entire rulebook, but at the end of the day the NCAA has shown over and over again that they don't follow rules. They make them up as they go along and call it "interpretation."

Probably not, but it pisses me off all over again about Drew Ott. He was deserving

The NCAA did NOT have Drew Otts best interest in mind. He was a poster child of deserving another year. Many players from blue blood programs have gotten another year with far weaker cases. Still pisses me off. Still think they cost that guy at least a shot at the NFL.

The Drew Ott story that came out and kinda blasted the NCAA decision on his case I feel will now work in our favor. I agree that they "give us one" to try to atone for that debacle.

Skimming through this article tells me that Oliver has a chance. He has as much right as Tate Martell. I'm gonna have to read some Michigan boards to see if Jimbo is gonna fight this. Apparently, Ohio State didn't have any ill-will towards Martell which made it easier for him.

If OM were transferring to another glamour school I'd be willing to be the waiver would be much more likely to be granted.

He does that.
He also stated they only do that if the player states he’s open to listen. If told committed they back off, I see no issue as recruit is wanting/allowing the continued recruitment.

Great news. Sounds like it could be a win/win. Hope it works out seamlessly.

Young QBs have to be excited!

If you look at that from the NCAA's perspective, that would open up a much bigger can of worms for them than denying Ott did. Let's not pretend that anyone on the NCAA's committees gives two shits about a little bad PR from a flyover state that doesn't involve sexual abuse or bribes.

Similar to officiating sports, a "make up call" is a fool's errand and only done by amateurs who don't know any better.
