Oline tweaks and thoughts

It’s pretty clear at this point that the interior of our offensive line is very weak, specially the guard play. I’d have to rewatch the game last night but overall Linderbaum has been solid at center.

You hear Brian talking about getting the best players on the field but is that really true? Can it really be argued at this point that Kallenberger isn’t one of the top 5 offensive linemen?

Some of us in the offseason mentioned moving a guy like Alaric inside to guard. Honestly I think he’s probably the most overrated tackle we’ve had. He hasn’t proved anything to date that makes me think he’s an NFL left tackle. With that said he’s got good size and is considered a pretty good run blocker. It won’t happen but I’d feel much better with Jackson at LG and Kallenberger at LT. Then figure out who the best RG is and stick with one guy, I'm tired of this stupid rotation stuff.

I mentioned before that it’s a question of depth, and it’s not an excuse for Polasek, but rather a glaring failure on his part.

All offensive lines have to deal with tons on injuries every and it’s the staff’s job to make sure everyone is at least coached to the level that they don’t give up 10 sacks and 13 hurries in 2 consecutive games. Polasek is getting the gifted athletes but not turning them into actual offensive linemen. If Wirfs wasn’t a superhuman to begin with he’d be in the same boat as the rest.

Bottom line you know with 100% certainty that as a P5 program you’re going to lose 5-6 guys during the year for between 3-4 games all the way up to a full season. As an OL coach your job is to be able to keep the boat afloat when it happens and he’s not getting it done.

Huge problem is both Paulsens are not even serviceable after 5 years in the program. For either to be playing right now means we had some crap years of O line recruiting for at least a few years. Obviously there’s been an uptick and we have a few beasts that are FR. But honestly it won’t matter with out bullshit zone blocking scheme. Sure a few guys will get drafted but long long gone are the days when we actually used to maul teams like WI does where our running game was actually a weapon.

All offseason I was saying Kallenberger should start somewhere. If Paulsen’s hadn’t cracked the lineup yet they simply weren’t good enough. What do you know Paulsen’s are getting a lot of play time and against P5 competition they are getting abused.

It’s probably telling that a true freshman Britt who was just coming off an ACL injury was pushing for play time. He’s got a bright future ahead but what does that say about the other guys? Walkons working their way into the mix as well, the signs were all there that this group would struggle, I guess we just overlooked it against the early cream puffs.

I would say I do think recruiting on the Oline has improved. Linderbaum is going to be a nice piece at center for the next several years. The aforementioned Britt will be very good as well. I think the Oline play will improve over the next few years just with more talent, but player development is a question mark there for sure which is asinine given the coaching staff we have.

Can you imagine how the offense is going to feel reviewing tape of this game. Maybe they just skip that routine this week....

They might as well skip it because there aren't going to be any improvements made. Our coaching staff is absolutely clueless other than Parker.

Yet Parker called the play allowed the game winning touchdown by pinching the LB. Easy audible by PSU bench — no defensive counter.

In fact, deep inside an opponent’s territory Parker has shown to go vanilla base and let the opponent drive down the field to score or flip field position.

He ain’t perfect.
