I read that Blythe played some Left Guard yesterday. And they moved other guys around. This may be one of the big the differences in the running game. Did anyone else notice? Does anyone have any more information on this? Looking forward to hearing more about it.

After listening to Pat Fitz post game, and Brandon's post game, I've come to belive that the underlying thing that made the difference today was ATTITUDE. KF said as much after the MD game. He said its a mindset. Brandon talked about the way the coaches coached ... just the over all intensity was there. Iowa did what Iowa does but they just whipped NW who knew what was coming.

It wasn't like Iowa got 5 turn overs and benefited from 10 penalties...they just whipped NW.

A lot of things went into this win. I hope they can keep it up.

I was there and Blythe played the left guard spot for most of the game. Then Welsh came in and played left guard in the fourth quarter. Gaul played center. Walsh was right guard. Blythe has more size weight wise and experience so we can actually run to the left. Welsh is a year away.

In the fourth quarter they finally subbed some at the 10-11 minute mark. Finally got next years left tackle in late for a few plays. He did not look good on the one pass pro where CJ scrambled out of the pocket but he was only in for a few and had not played since Ball St.

Blythe played guard (again). He has since Walsh went down. They have discovered that our best oline has him at guard and Gaul at center. Gaul isn't as good as Blythe at center but he is a lower downgrade at center than Walsh or welsh is compared to Blythe at guard.

the problem shaped out like this lose a little at center to gain a lot at guard or gain a little at center and lose a lot at guard. Finally we have chosen the first and are going to rotate welsh and Walsh as long as they are healthy.

they also changed up the way they blocked - less zone scheme -more pulling guards, etc. I think that really caught NW off guard given they have a history of 'cheating' against the zone blocking scheme.

There are multiple zone schemes. Some use pulling linemen. One of those and the most common after the basic zone scheme is the pin and pull which has uncovered linemen pull play side. So it doesn't mean they were running more man blocking they could have used more secondary zone schemes.

Blythe has been playing guard since Walsh went down on the first drive against Indiana. In the 2nd half against Maryland they brought Walsh back in and moved Blythe to the left side. Read GameFilm's writeup of the MD game and you'll see that Blythe really struggled with the extra space to work in.

The OL was flat-out awesome yesterday, though. Whatever they were doing, they need to keep it up.

Good point I'm sure Hawkeyereed approves of this message.

During the game, I got the impression that the run game was not particularly effective to the left. It was up the gut and to the right that we seem to get yards. I could certainly be wrong on this...haven't seen replays.

I agree there is a drop off from Blythe to Gaul, but yesterday Gaul was a manimal for much of the game. I seen him drive his defender all over the field on many occasions and get to the second level often. I think he's taking his opportunity and crushing it (definitely something your expect from a guy who's waited for 5 years). Great story.

whatever they were doing :) i think the change up seemed to catch NW off guard. At least I noticed something different looking - whatever the case, it worked v. NW.
