For anybody who cares, this is old’s thoughts on the Hawksthus far.
The whole O is blocking very well in the run game. Mark is the type of back that will make themost of those blocks. Mark could work on his stiff arm. J BF seems to have the OL clicking fairly well, but they have room to clean it up a bit as well. When it comes to the passinggame, we know GD is a good teacher and has a little something to bring to thegame. We know Vandy is a good student of the game, with all the time he hasspent picking GD’s brain and studying film. I am starting to wonder if Vandy isnot like a person staying up to late to study for a test. I am starting to think he is playing with toomuch head. Maybe him being a SR, heneeds to let the game come to him more and just play catch. Something is makinghim miss the easy ones, and not by a little either. He does need people to get more separation, goup and get the ball for him and give him some help.
The D. I read where the front has been working hard and nowwe are starting to see some of the benefits from it. They will need to keepworking just as hard as the season goes on, (got MSU next week!!), but theyhave shown they are not afraid to put in the work and as the year goes on, theycould be the most improved of all units and with hard work this year and offseason, could be ready to make a name for themselves next year and that sayssomething when thinking about some of Iowa’s past DL’s. The back side is asplit. Some of the guys are starting to make some plays, while others aremissing some. Some guys just kind of look lost back there. A team with betterpassing then MN (there are a lot of them), would have picked them apart. Nowsome will say that has to do with the pass rush, but I am not talking coveringa guy for 6 seconds, I am talking the short passes and the coverage there. Idon’t like that some back there do not get their head around when they know theball is coming. Hyde made a very nice high point play and had his vision in theright place. That will not work as we go thru the season. There is a lot of room for improvement backthere and for this week, this is the group I have to call out. Thankfully the B10 is not loaded with greatqb’s right now, but there are a few that will eat up our secondary if there isnot improvement back there.
Congrats and enjoy the weekend. On Monday get ready to get back to work, because MSU thinks they are the bullies of the B10 and there is no love lostbetween them and us.
