Ok, time to talk some spring football, positions, any changes

For the first time in a long time, maybe 2010, I am really looking forward to the upcoming football season.

The way the coaches and players changed the attitude or culture or planning last year the results were of course amazing.

(I am still hoping for some wins by both the basketball teams and wrestlers)

Is there any chance CJB practices in the spring? I am hoping the young WRs not only replace Tevaun Smith but give us 3 or 4 fast, deep threats.

The running game should be exciting again, wadley can break them, Leshun is above avg, and hope Mitchell gets more action.

I hope the hawks practice in Des Moines again and will want to see final spring scrimmage.

I gather no good news about Ott yet.

Two senior very good CBs coming back with a skilled safety so it will be interesting to see the top 2 players to go after Lomax's spot.

The linebackers should be above avg again and maybe better.

Will Faith E. emerge more in the Dee tackle rotation or could he also try out Dee End?

It will be fun to watch because I can still feel the excitement of CJ to TSmith for 85 yards and a TD in the Big Champ game and the almost conversion to Vandeberg on the next possession.

I am excited and ready for football season. According to Moorehouse, Steve Ferentz will be getting the first team center reps due to injury. My question is where is the fall down line? If we lose three, is that to much? If we do 2010, what happens then? I am black and gold thru and thru so I wont run away but where do we lose the good of last year?

I think the hawks will be very competitive. Why not???? The schedule could be manageable and even 8-4 would be good.

The schedule will be a little harder but not dramatically different in 2016.

Essentially traded up, trading Indiana for Michigan. Otherwise the teams Iowa plays in 2016 are about equal to 2015.

Penn St = Pitt
Miami = North Texas
NDSU = ILL St
RUT = MD

But Iowa does get Neb, Wisc, NW and Michigan at home in Iowa City in 2016. 2016 games on road are at Penn St, Rut, ILL, Minn, Pur.

So 2016 schedule does seem manageable.

Need to see a couple WR step up. Jay s and falconer hopefully. Need to see some de depth too. Hoping a young running back stands out too. I like Steve fermentz but doubting he will be our center come sept.

If Iowa can stay healthy (especially CJ), they will run the table again. I predicted 12-0 last year, and this is actually an easier schedule (look at the home schedule). Indiana's offense last year was way scarier than Michigan's will be this year...A healthy Iowa handles Hairball and Meatchicken fairly easily.....

One advantage Iowa had in 2015 is that it faced abnormal number of first year coaches or interim coaches in 2015. In 2016 it's more of a mix.

ILL, Rut, ISU will have 1st year coaches in 2016.

Minn sorta will have a new coach but he is not really new.

Wisc, Neb, Mich will have 2nd year coaches, so that will help those teams improve you would think.

PSU, Pur, NW have veteran coaches again but that may not mean they are better.

Wait, only HawkNick predicted 12-0. You gonna have to bump your post predicting 12-0...

James Daniels will be the starting center unless something crazy happens. I expect the O-Line to have some moving pieces with Boettger, Croston, Welsch and Myers mixed in with some RS Freshman pushing for PT. Really interested in how the DE situation plays out and how they look against the more experienced front 5.

Yeah, uh-huh, me too man.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Gholston (sp) getting a lot of playing time at DE as a true freshman.

Will be anxious to see what his wingspan really is if he makes it to a draft combine in the future. We'll find out if Iowa players' arms really do shorten. Of course, maybe that's just left tackles. ;)

"They're getting a long defensive end that can play a multitude of position. Has over a nine-foot wingspan.

kinda like this dude. Alonzo Spellman was scary back in the day, long arms, muscular.....He looked the part, man if that cat would have ever put it together he would have been a monster.

Rutgers is a huge trade down. That program is circling the toilet. Miami is going to be significantly harder than North Texas. Other than that, I think you're right. But that said, I can't really name too many players we're losing from last season that were "irreplaceable". T. Smith, but it's not like WR was our strong suit anyway. Lomax is gone, but we bring back two 4 year starters at the corners and a damn fine SS. Linebacking is down Cole Fisher, but we bring back Jewell and Niemann plus a load of new talent (and some starting experience with Bo Bower). O-line loses 2, but brings back 5 with starting experience. D-line loses 2, but Ott barely played and Meier wasn't exactly dominant (strong play, but not really disruptive). Canzeri was maybe the most important piece to lose, but we've got two returning contributors and, again, loads of new talent and DMX coming back, too.

Most important piece: a fully healthy Beathard and a more experienced Wiegers as backup. I think I'd like to see a move of Drew Cook over to the FS position.

I'd say the floor for this kind of team would be 8-4. Ceiling is another undefeated regular season. I'll split the difference and say we go 10-2.

Vernon Gholston, 2006 picked by the Jets 6th overall. One of the biggest draft busts in history. Really good in college though.

Cook to FS?? That's a new one on me. Isn't he 6'5, 230? That'd make him Brian Urlacher out there pretty much. I figured he'd be moving to TE if by the end of spring he's running 4th string... But maybe he's stubborn and will hang on to QB till this time next yr hard to say... I'm sure the coaches would like to clear up that log jam at QB and if your going to switch positions the earlier the better in terms of adapting goes...

Whoa, did not know he was 230. But at 6'5, if he can move (he's supposedly a dual threat type QB), then that kind of height could be pretty great in a guy who also studied WR routes. Make it a lot easier to jump those routes.
