Ohio State's Kyle McCord

I do not trust the decisions that have been made on offense. When you are performing as poorly as we are you need to start evaluating your alternatives and to me that means playing them. It was nice to win the Big West but to do that we may have sacrificed a couple of future years. The very best outcome now is to hire a proven OC who can attract some recruits and either give our other QB's a chance and/or get a good one in the portal.

You guys don't get it yet do you.... You enter the portal every year and look to increase your payout as you don't have to leave the school you're at but at the very least you extort a higher payout from your school. This is the game that is going to be played every off-season. It is as if free agency existed for every player every year. Their agents are having them do this. These NIL's need to have escalators and loyalty bonuses.

The big winners will be B10 and SEC and you should be looking to fill roster spots with proven college assets at this point
Yep. It's nothing but free agents testing the waters on a yearly basis. Honestly surprised more aren't doing it. Put their name out there, shop around and either find a better offer/opportunity or maybe put more money in their pocket if you decide to stick around or get an offer they can't refuse to stay there.

Rhule, Ferentz, Bielema and Dabo are probably the only guys at big time programs who legit want to build teams and develop their own guys. Let us not forget that Ohio ran Joe Burrow out of town!
While Ferentz is still about development he may be turning the corner as well based on the success he's had with the transfer market lately. I wouldn't be shocked in the near future if you see the recruitment of high school players flat line at big time programs. Why put the time and energy into searching for high school seniors when you can have your pick through the transfer window. Probably a much easier process as well when you consider how much time and energy goes into recruiting at the high school level just to see a player flip immediately before signing day.

It only makes sense to really target the most elite players out of high school. A guy like that dude from Altoona who went to Alabama is a guy you gotta recruit out of high school, but if you're Alabama you could probably get comfortable only recruiting 5 star guys on o-line and in key defensive positions. I am not convinced that you can build an entire defense through the portal. Colorado and USC both tried and failed miserably. You gotta have a core back seven with continuity and then plug and play up to two or three guys. O-line guys need to play together. Every other position, just go pure free agents.

I agree that you cannot build an entire team from the portal. But like you hit on if you're doing it to plug holes and not trying to replace and entire team the way Colorado did there's definitely advantages to doing it through the portal rather than doing so with players who are unproven or may need a few years to develop.

Hitting the Portal. Can you imagine the crap the poor kid is taking in Columbus? Probably almost as much as BF is everywhere!

Fans are wanting to go after Cam Ward from Washington State who has also entered the portal. Wonder how much that will cost Ohio State? Few million I would guess

Is that what NIL is all about??

Yep. You are gunna see freshman QB's who go to programs like Iowa who may start and have a successful season then enter the portal at the end of the season just to chase NIL $$$$$. No other complaints or coach changes. Just to enter to see what's out there or to leverage their current school to pony up to keep them.

We've already seen this with basketball and the Iowa St. team. They had that freshman last year or the year prior who played as a true freshman and got a lot of minutes and had great stats on an upcoming team. He had no reason to complain or have a beef but entered the portal at the end of the year to transfer when NIL came into affect. Totally the $$$$ guiding him. The guy had nothing to complain about at Iowa St and there were no coaching changes.

This is what is going to completely screw the middle teams and completely load the top 10 teams in each sport. These teams are going to be in the post season EVERY year. The gap between these true NIL Blue Bloods and the rest is going to be huge.

I thought it would screw the middle teams, but if we can stay healthily in the middle it could make us very good. It absolutely has screwed Indiana and Northwestern, we just got stay way above that because there are enough dudes on the elite teams that will get cut and play down because they need reps to get to the NFL, which is their real goal. I mean, we had an embarrassment of riches through the portal last year and every time there is a guy on a middling program like Virginia who wants to get better or there are guys on Michigan or Ohio who want immediate snaps Iowa is going to be attractive. Imagine how dismal this team looks if we didn't get All and Higgins. Good God.

Higgins is home grown. He wasn't a transfer.

They will. You will see this happening more and more going forward. They may fish for an offer and go back. Maybe the NCAA should say if a player enters the portal they can't go back to the team they are leaving. That may curve some of it if there is a risk involved. Won't happen but that is where we are at.
