Ohio State Gold Pants Pins

Someone on here started a thread a while back talking about how Ferentz was asked and commented on how OSU got away with awarding players these gold pins when they beat michigan.

Anyway, just watching the new Pawn Stars on history channel and a guy walks in with two of them from 08 and 02 to sell. Says he got them at some sale. So now not only are players getting the pins, but they are uniting this with their new favorite violation of selling there team memorabilia.

It all seems really selfish to me, no matter how you slice it.

they can sell whatever they want once they're out of school.

Yes, and we can hold you, your coach, your team, and your entire fanbase in contempt.

I realize that. That is why I ended with saying it was selfish, not necessarily a big deal NCAA wise. I just think these players need to think beyond the instant gratification of the few bucks they get for these things to the regret they'll have later for selling it.

More power to them if they want to sell when they graduate. Just found it to be a little ironic given the recent stories. I really couldn't care less.

Do you really think they'll regret selling them? I'd guess that they exist solely so they *can* sell them and get some $$.

This really seems like something that would be against NCAA regs. They are pretty direct as far as compensation/spending on players issues.

How about Iowa start offering small gold helmets made out of $10,000 worth of gold to every player that starts at least 3 games a season or something. Same diff as O$U's pins, right? Probably would help recruiting a bit as well.

If you got 3 or four, what does it matter to sell a couple?

Not having seen the show, my question is, "Which players sold them originally, and were the players still playing for OSU when they sold them?" If they were already done playing, no big deal. If they were current players when they sold them, then this sort of establishes a pattern that OSU may have or possibly should have been aware of.

Look, people get used to a certain lifestyle and when your time playing football for OSU is over and the checks stop coming and you have to rely on your OSU education to fund your lifestyle, well things get hard. You have to make some sacrifices, I feel bad for these guys, it's really not their fault.

Fufred, one was from '08, and had initials LB, said it was Boone or something, know who that would've been? Other one was from '02. It's hard to say when they were sold too, because the guy said he bought them from a dealer who got them from the players. Not likely bought yesterday. I'm not saying foul play, I'm just saying.

This is exactly the question the NCAA should be looking into.

Maybe this was a good idea back in the 60's and 70's when the memorabilia meant something to the players -- but not today. Today it is looked at only as a revenue generation opportunity particularly by some of the top players. Not all but definitely by some.

The 08 pair was from someone with the initials DW who is believed to be Donald Washington's (he left after the 08 season for the NFL). The pair from 02 was LeAndre Boone's. He transferred before the 03 season.

See this is the part I don't get. Why would a guy who is heading to the NFL unload one of these rare things that only about 100 people get for a little bit of nothing. If they mean nothing to the players except revenue then it should probably be stopped.
