Oglesby out indefinitely...

I just wish people would make up their minds. Is JO a worthless, one-dimensional player that isn't even good at that dimension (3-point shooting), or, now that he's hurt, a valuable and irreplaceable asset to the team.

I agree with you. This isn't a big injury no matter how long he's out. Clemens is a far more important player to get back and healthy. If by some miracle Oglesby actually turns into a 40% three point shooter, then he becomes irreplaceable to this team. As long as he's below 30%, then he's actually quite replaceable.

Could end up being a negative when Josh returns. I wanted Fran to figure out the 11 man rotation while we feasted on cupcakes early in the season. I'd rather not have him try to figure out while playing our rather brutal B1G schedule.

Come on, man, I was trying to be positive. Don't bring me down. :) Fact is, even though JO has struggled with shooting, which is the primary reason he's out there, he has played pretty good defense, which I am concerned about with Jok. The extra minutes for Jok, which I'm assuming he'll get, will help his development, because he'll need to play defense if he wants minutes on McCaffery's team.

My guess is we may appreciate JO more when some two guard gets hot and we have no one who can begin to slow him down. I wasn't sure we had any defender who would be able to be that guy (like May was last year) before this injury. Now I'm getting pretty certain we don't have.

IMO we'll miss May and we"ll miss Josh.

Hello! Thank you!

Last year the coaches felt JO gave the Hawks the best chance to nail a three. Plays were specifically ran for him and he didn't produce. Thus, ending in wasted possessions, JO could clearly light it up in High School or he would't have had numerous offers, but at Iowa he hasn't shaken the cobwebs out of his head. At this point it seems to be a mental road block not physical ability and until he gets over that hump he will draw angst from the fans. Not saying he doesnt contribute in other ways, but he is a specialized player somewhat like a kicker in football. The kicker's job is to hit FG's and in this case JO's job is to nail three's. Hopefully this starts occuring on a regular basis because if the Hawks want to do something really special this year they need a guy who can nail a three at the drop of a hat.

Here are JO's 3 pt stats from the trip this summer.

*Box score was unavailable so I could not find how many attempts

12 divided by 28 is 42.9% and those totals don't include the 5 3pters he made on 8/14/13.
Granted this was not Big Ten competition, it wasn't the PTL either.

That's great. I hope that continues when he gets back for Big 10 play. Iowa needs either him or Jok to step up this year and become that reliable three point threat.

JO's frosh stats are so overblown. Much smaller sample size, over 25% of the 3's he made that year were in 2 games. If he was on any other team Iowa fans would think he sucks and wait to see any evidence of him being a good shooter.

You must be a relative. He's not a B10 talent, period. What B10 team would a 6'3" kid that can't shoot or handle the ball, can't man up on anybody see time with?
Bottom line: the only reason he sees the floor is the hope that he would get hot from the line- unfortunately this 3 point specialist shot 26% for the season with very few good moments.
I love the team too, but am not blinded by it. Looking forward to seeing more skilled and physically talented players getting more minutes.

And you must not have watched any Iowa bb last year.....Josh is a full 6'6'', which is why he is important to this team...he can guard 2's and 3's. He is a good defender, and will shoot the ball much better. Iowa was last in the league in shooting from the arc, and like it or not, Josh has more potential to raise his shooting % than any other player...Fran is not a liar when he continues to insist that Josh is a good shooter.

Agreed, JO's freshman year he shot 17/59 for 28.8% in B10 conference games, his sophomore year he shot 19/81 for 23.4%. That's a 36 game sample size against B10 competition where he is a 25.7% 3 point shooter. I think he is what he is at this point.

Is it normal for kids to shoot better as Jr & Sr. than they did as Fr. & So. ??? Matt Gatens ???

I'd say so yes. Eric May was a much better shooter last year than he had been previously. It's not a given though.

Pfft, 6' 4" tops.

Using the logic the Josh haters are, Jok should have his scolly revoked cause he plays terrible defense and missed ALL his 3pt shots in the exhibition game!
