Officiating

Again there were many things that cost us the game and poor officiating was definitely one of them. I just rewatched the game and there were a lot more bad calls then just the few mentioned. Yes thats part of basketball and there is nothing you can do about it but based on my biased Hawkeye point of view if this game was officiated perfectly we win going away even with our turnovers and bad free throw shooting. And that is not including the foul by White on the three because I honestly could not tell if that was a good call or not.

I did comment during the game that Dawson slaps all the time, I guess if a player does it all the time they don't get called, but it is frustrating when you can hear the arm slap on TV and not the ball, is sucks.

All I would like to see is games called similar in conference play, but each crew is on opposite ends, it seems from game to game. The "interpretation" of what is, or is not a foul game to game is frustrating.

That said, teams have to adjust, the game was physical and Iowa lost by 2, not so bad.

Officiating is not why Iowa lost this game..making one basket over a 12 minute stretch and 18 turnovers is why they lost.

That said, this league needs to change the amount of mugging they allow in basketball...both ways. It's just not fun to watch...they need to change it as opposed to wearing it like some badge of honor.

Let me rephrase then. If the game had been officiated "cleanly", say along the lines of a common ACC or Big East game, I firmly believe Iowa wins yesterday by several baskets.

Allowing rough play benefitted one team disproportionately.

And with that Iowa lost by 20 and not 3, right?

That is the thing that is funny when people cry "foul" over officiating, get off of it, Iowa lost by 3 points and did everything to lose the game, not everything to win.

For all the disproportionate calls, Iowa still should have won the game.

Now if this was a double digit loss with the officiating, you may have something of a point and still a reach, but a loss by 3 and Iowa with multiple chances to win, the argument doesn't apply.

TO's, FT's and missed shots, Iowa is getting it done on on the defensive end, not the offensive end.

Like many of you I was at the game. The officiating was not good, rather embarrassing and it did impact the game. Could we have won despite this? Absolutely. That is on us but make no mistake the game was called MSU's way on our home floor.

Consider this..... the home team, who does not shoot a lot of threes, is attacking the basket in the half-court and in transition does not shoot a single free-throw in the first half. The same home team is also not known as a physical team. Meanwhile the opponent on the home team's floor that is known as a physical team and employs a physical brand of basketball is the beneficiary of 6 fouls most of which were in the act of shooting before a single foul was called on them. The opponent was whistled for this first foul with 5 minutes left in the first. Then the last 5 minutes the officials proceeded to even up the stats but the 5 fouls they whistled on the opponent were all of the non-shooting variety. What happened the last 5 minutes? The opponent suddenly decided to start fouling as a part of their strategy? Again, 15 minutes of play ZERO fouls on MSU. Iowa shoots ZERO free-throws in the first half on it's home floor.

I think the B1G might have the worst referees in college basketball. All I want is consistency of calls, even the calls are bad as long as they are called both ways I am 1000% fine with that. I want to see great basketball not bump, push, slap ball. This type of stuff really takes away from the flow of the game.

The truth is Michigan State's program is on the decline. This kind of ref'ing (IZZO rules ala the Jordan rules) is hurting the league. Keep in mind which high seed from the B1G was knocked out early in last year's tournament? Yes, MSU which was an embarrassment. Why? Because they are not that good but receive a huge helping hand in the way their games are officiated. Not just against Iowa either. Michigan State was awesome at one time but now it's ridiculous.

Any team that has a player like Derrick Nix ought to tell you a lot. He is the worst player in the B1G but gets bailed out constantly.

My tournament bracket will have MSU ought by the second round.

The only no call that bothered me was when Basabe established position after the missed free throw and is practically speared by two State players when he was clearly tackled going for the rebound. If they had been playing football it would have 15 yards and a first down.

We are young and did what young teams do, lose games inexplicably.

The officiating was so bad last night that 2 of them were at the scores table and the 3rd inbounded the ball. I knew as soon as they said the officials names that it was going to a horrible game.
